Veteran Zuiderdam cruisers: One of my travelling companions on the Zuiderdam this July will celebrate a birthday. Does anyone know if HAL and this particular ship does anything special for them? If so, what???

If the Zuiderdam is consistent with the rest of the HAL ships you can have a cake at dinner that night.

Just have your TA note your records (usually mine asks that as part of the booking process) that there will be a birthday "special occasion". At dinner the stewards will bring a cake and sing a birthday song.
Ask them to sing the Indonesian song! It's a lot more fun than the usual Happy Birthday.

There are also special birthday packages available for purchase. These can be flowers with balloons, or some such items.

On my birthday last August, I found balloons and ribbons taped to the outside of my cabin door in the morning. :)

Zuiderdam is consistent with the other dam ships. Let them know the first night if you would like a cake on the birthday night and then they will sing the birthday song in their native language. They'll bring several stewards from other tables too.

the dining room Stewards will sing "Happy Birthday" When I first started sailing on the HAL ships they used to sing a song in Indonesian. Wish they still did!!!

When we sailed on the Oosterdam last Nov., there were at least 5 birthdays per night!
[None in our party]
Cake & singing were the order of the evening.

Two weeks ago I celebrated my birthday on the Volendam. Towards the end of the meal, the head steward came over to the table, wished me a Happy Birthday, and then announced that they were out of Birthday cakes and they would celebrate tomorrow (they did). Ask for the Indonesian version, it's way better!
