Hi,
A question for the ladies
Having never cruised before I am not sure what is expected when it comes to formal wear for the Captains Gala and is it possible to be over dressed for this occasion?.... A friend of mine has a dress hire business, so I am able to hire a gown from her but they are all pretty lavish and the thought of being over dressed is nearly as bad as being under dressed.... Would I be ok if hired one of her gowns or would I be better to buy a "nice" dress (something like, what is about for the xmas party season or the little black dress number).
Kind regards

Hi Meg,
Pretty much anything goes - ladies wore long dresses, cocktail dresses or trousers with dressy tops. Just wear whatever you feel comfortable in.
Enjoy :)

Hi Meg
Cocktail type dresses will be fine. Long and short versions of the little black dress or sparkly top and black pants. Don't go for the meringue full skirted Gone With The Wind type dresses. There were men in full Scottish dress but mainly the usual DJ's or black suits with white shirts and bow tie. It's no big deal really so don't build it up in your mind too much. We queued for almost an hour for 3 photos and bought 2 of them. Then into the show lounge for a glass of sparkling wine (warm), applaud the crew, couple of songs from the show team and down to dinner. That's it basically, we did it once but probably wouldn't bother again, too much hanging around, but a lot of people enjoy it. Depends what you like to do really and also how much room you have in your case, lol. It's something different though so enjoy yourself.:):)

My five formal dresses are all full length, in a shimmery or glittery fabric, one is beaded and sequinned, most are fairly clingy or ruched, one has a godet hem that kicks out when I walk. You will see all styles and lengths of dresses; wear what you feel good in and what you would like a photo of yourself (with the Captain) wearing.

I think its a nice part of cruising....the opportunity to dress up doesn't happen on a regular basis for me, so we fully enjoy dressing up for formal nights. It makes everything feel more special. We have only cruised once before and that was on the QE2 and everyone dressed up, mostly long dresses, some were plain, some beaded and some very OTT but anything goes so enjoy it. I know I will, I am taking a black full length chiffon dress, with thin straps and silver beading on the bodice for our cruise to the Red Sea in January, and for the rest of the evenings, will probably take black evening trousers with a selection of dressy tops.

Hi,
Thanks for all the replys.... I am sure my friend will have something suitable, if not it will be the "little black dress" option as it is usualy a safe bet.... TBH I'm not that fussed if we go or not but I will go with an open mind and enjoy the evening for what it is.
Kind regards

The secret is to mix and match luggage (just incase 1 case goes missing).... That way my other half and daughter don't realise I have stolen their luggage allowance:D:D:D
