Realizing it is personal preference, but do you prefer the Upper Dining Room or the Lower Dining Room on the Eurodam?

It seems as if the Lower Dining Room looks out to the ocean, and the Upper Dining Room looks out to the Promenade Deck. Is it strange to have people walking by? Does it ruin the view?

Same way on all 3 of the HAL ships I've been on and I cannot say that I have a real preference, except that the ceilings in the lower dining room on deck 2 are higher, If I remember correctly. I may have them confused but it is the fixed Dining times dining room that had the higher ceinings. I hate getting old... Can't remember exactly.

But in direct answer to your question, I like both. And it was neat watching people strolling by on the Promenade Deck as we ate:)

I was a little afraid to open this thread...:D.:D....sorry :o

I don't think there is ever much of a crowd strolling the promenade to obscure your view for any length of time.:)

We enjoy table #122 or # 127 table for two (Eurodam or Zuiderdam)

THAT IS SO FUNNY!!! My wife and I took a romantic cruise on the Eurodam, and were told by the crew that table 122 and 127 were the "Honeymooner's Tables".... because of there location! We grabbed them each night, and LOVED THEM!!!!

Secrets out! If you are looking for romance, 122 and 127 are the tables!

Now, we have the kids coming next week, and are looking for the "best" tables for four!

Joanie, I always love your advice! Thanks!

I think I remember that about the ceiling height! You're right... that is a big deal. Thanks.

It's more than the view that matters in many folk's preferences:

Upper is Fixed/Traditional - Lower is Open Seating.
Upper has better A/C - Lower often gets warmer, particularly at the stern by the windows.
Upper feels more open since it doesn't have the huge center podium/pantry blocking the views across the space as in Lower.

On the other hand, Lower has more round 6 and 8 tops whereas Upper has the entire starboard side of the room filed w/ rectangular 10, 8 and 6 tops which aren't as conducive to conversation.

If you want fixed dining you will be on the upper level. If yu want 'open dining" betwwn 5:15 and 9:PM you will be on the lower level. I have a slignt prefernce for the lower level.

I was reluctant to open this thread. And I would never be brave enough to entitle it as it is. But it caught my attention.

I am interested in the responses after I found out what the subject matter really was. So thank you for asking the question.

we have never been on Holland America but hear only good things about it

we have been on RC, Celebrity, Princess, Norgegian with Celebrity being our favorite.

Am worried there will not be decent dancing and music in the evening (that is not ballroom)

And worried the shows are not as good?

any advice

thanks

I am not sure about dancing, but on our cruise on the Eurodam in May the acoustic guitarist, Aaron Tessis, was very good. My son (18) went up every evening to the Crow's Nest to listen to him and bought one of his cd's. Also, James Cielen had an amazing magic show with his wife who is an aerialist. His cute little boys were in the show as well as his dogs and birds. However, the piano bar entertainer on the Eurodam was not nearly as good. He had come over from Carnival and he made comments on that score that left me with the impression he liked the Carnival crowd better. Our first cruise was on the Westerdam in 2008. The Piano Man in the Piano Bar on that particular cruise however was excellent. I think that tastes are subjective and there are some very good entertainers on HAL but some not so good ones sprinkled in there as well. ON any one particular cruise it is hard to say unless you can find out the schedule, or someone has just returned from the same cruise and can give you a heads up.

Also one must remember that it is dark earlier in the winter and you may not see a thing looking out the windows while you dine. Also I have had them close the drapes in the summer when the sun vividly shines through and then the romantic atmosphere disappears. We have become avid fans of dining when we like and even though it still is about the same time everyday we don't have to rush down to be there on time.

True! What time does it get dark in the Caribbean in late December?

I prefer Lower Level as location but prefer Fix Dining so end up in Upper.

As for when it gets dark in December, Depending on the the time zone pretty much the same as it would for you at home maybe just a bit later. If I remember correctly it was between 5:30 and 6:00, it did seem the farther South we went it was closer to 6pm when we cruise on the Eurodam in December 2008.

Are either of these two tops on the upper level of the Eurodam?

I generally like the bottom. Oops, I said what? As for dining rooms on ships, we've been both top and bottom, and this time we're doing anytime dining, so I guess it's bottom again. Hope the Zuiderdam has a good bottom. Ha ha.
