Hi MaryEllen!
If I had the time at work I would join you in a heartbeat...good luck finding someone!

Since Alaska is booking VERY well this year, you may want to try HAL's share program rather than finding a roommate and then looking for a cruise. They'll pair you with another female and I'm pretty sure either non-smoking or no smoking in the cabin. If they don't get you a roommate, the cabin is all yours.
It has been a while since I've seen a thread on the share program, but I know some here on the board have done this in the past.
(btw - I'd figured you were 2 years older than I am. Love the screen name.)
Good luck -

I'll ask my DH if he would like to join you. He is 52, non-smoker, well educated, a traveler, (and his brother is from Tallahassee - if that counts ) and has been wanting to book a cruise to Alaska. I have no desire to go yet as I still love the warm weather cruises. :D

HAL's guaranteed share program automatically considers the cabin as a non-smoking one. Of course, if you happen to draw two smokers in the room, then you can certainly request an ashtray from your steward. But, if one person is non-smoking, the cabin is automatically considered a non-smoking cabin.
That is why I've thus far stayed away from the guaranteed share program. I'm a smoker and the odds of my finding another smoker are slim to none. Of course, the lure of sailing the Pacific Islands on a 30-day itinerary next January has made me revise my thinking on this point, and I went ahead and booked under HAL's guaranteed share program. Of course, I'm hoping they either pair me with a smoker, or don't find me a roommate. My TA (who has a bit of influence with HAL because of some very large groups he handles) has promised to stay on top of this to see if they can work a deal with another smoker, or a smaller cabin on my own. But, of course, there are no guarantees and I could very well wind up with a non-smoking roommate for the 30 days. So ... in that case, I will just have to compromise and go up on deck when I want to enjoy a smoke. I guess going guaranteed share is a small price to pay in order to sail for 30-days to Hawaii and the South Pacific ... especially since at the rate I was quoted for a single, there would be no way I could afford to do this itinerary without the guaranteed share program. Even though HAL's single occupancy rates are better than those of most lines, from what my TA told me, the rates are dependant on the desirability of the individual cruise. In my case, this particular sailing is very, very popular and is only done once per year. Therefore, the single supplement is pretty close to 100%. No way could I afford that. I would imagine Alaska sailings in prime season would be the same situation.
My advice to the lady looking for a share for Alaska is the same as expressed by others on this thread. Just book the cabin guaranteed share and then let HAL worry about finding you a roommate. It's not your problem and if they can't locate one, then you get to enjoy the cabin yourself at the double occupancy rate.
Blue skies ...

I need a cabin mate myself but I don't think I could share with a lady I didn't know pretty well.
I am 51, non-cigarettesmoking , snore a bit sometimes after a good dinner and a couple of glasses of wine.
I was looking at the Veendam (I think) May 15th Southbound for just over $500 for the 7 days. I did think maybe it would not be too bad to pay double at this rate for an inside.
I have not found out how the Veendam is getting up to Seward the week before but i guess it might be a private charter or something, I would have liked b2b at that rate.
Was in Tampa last week, wish I'd known then we could have met up!

Mike - No need to pay 200%...just for the heck of it, I went to bestpricecruises, and a solo rate, your OWN cabin, for 15 May, is $778 TOTAL(L category, I think), for an inside...great deal. Book it! I sailed on the Veendam to Alaska last year, solo, loved it. They also sat me with other solos in the dining room, and it greatly enhanced my cruise.
