I've read that US dollars are accepted virtually everywhere in Costa
Rica. Is that true even in outlying areas? We will be spending two
days in Monteverde before boarding the Star Flyer. Is there any
reason to request a supply of colones ahead of time or can we
just use US dollars for small expenses?

Deanna,

I’m not sure anybody can give you a definitive answer. While it’s true that most tourist destinations do accept the US dollar, establishments that are off the beaten path may not be capable of handling currency exchange.

We did a coffee plantation tour deep in the interior. The tour stopped at a number of places and we had no problem with vendors accepting our US dollars. However, all of those locations were either tourist attractions or under contract with the tour operator.

One of the beauties of Star Clippers cruises is the fact they stop in out-of-the-way locations ... and one of their curses is the same.

I suggest you hope for the best (they take US dollars) and be prepared to hit the local ATM to get colón’s if they are needed. [Never EXPECT to get US dollars in change anytime you pay for something in US dollars.]

Enjoy!
