We are sailing on the Zuiderdam in April. We have booked stateroom 4174. Does anyone know if it has the "new" bedding. I am a bit of a bedding freak (change my sheets every other day) and am a bit worried that the linens won't be nice.

Just to let you know, the sheets aren't changed at all during the 6 nights you are sleeping on them. I noticed this after I accidentally smudged one of the sheets one evening and saw the same slight dirt stain the next night.
Surprised me.

Holy cow! Seriously, I wonder if you can ask the room steward to change them...even once would be better than never.

That's not true - the sheets will have been changed when you arrive in the cabin, are changed again on day 3 or 4 of a 7 day cruise (can't remember which). I know - I have watched the stewards change them many times, in fact on the last cruise on the Westerdam, our cabin steward changed them again the last night.

Maybe Iggypolka had a cabin steward who forgot to change hers, but believe me they are changed midway through a 7 day cruise and more often on longer cruises.

The bedding and sheets are all new and are wonderful. 300 count Egyptian cotton and new mattresses - Sealy Europ Top - everyone is raving about them.

I thought they were only putting new bedding on the Maasdam? We are going on the Zuiderdam at the end of May.

Do you know if they wash the bedspreads at the end of every cruise? I was just curious about that. I know at hotels they do not wash the blankets or bedspreads after every quest. When I worked in a hotel years ago I think we changed them ever month maybe and if they were soiled or dirty.

I am really curious about the bedspread being cleaned after every cruise.

It's funny because I've never noticed a smoke smell in any cabin I've ever been in on any cruise. I wonder how they get the smell out of the carpet and the bedding if someone smokes cigars or cigarettes? And thank God I've never noticed any heavy deoderizer in any cabins either on any cruises I've taken. Have I just gotten lucky?

We were on Zuiderdam in April 2004 in 5186. They replaced the bedding in the middle of our cruise. The old bedding was pretty good and got no complaints from me. But, the new bedding was just unreal. Easily the nicest bed I have ever slept in, including my own. Even the 5 star hotels I have stayed in cannot compare with this new bedding. As for cleaning, the bed linens were always clean as a pin. Since they completely replaced the bedding in the middle of the cruise, I'm not sure how often they normally replace it. But I know, it is completely replaced at least once. Given the level of service I've experienced on HAL, if you ask your cabin steward to replace it daily, it will probably be replaced daily, no questions asked. They truely aim to please.

Sleep tight...

Well that's good to know that they do replace the bedding at least once during the week. I must have messed it up the day that they changed it! Woops!

Whew!!! (wiping the sweat from my brow)...this is good news. I hope they have the new bedding in our room. This is off course from the original topic but...since we asked for a specific cabin...is there still a chance we could be upgraded?

No more Bedspreads on HAL
They use duvet covers now, which are easily washed...

Since you requested a specific cabin, the chances of an upgrade are extremely slim. The only scenario may be if they need your cabin to accomodate someone else... for example if you are booked in a triple or a quad - or a handicapped cabin.

Are the duvets for every cabin in every catagory? If so, how nice! I had thought they would just be in SS and higher.

Duvets are only in S & PS Suites. SS do not have them.

Are they still using the regular bedspreads and throw pillows in cabin categories that do not have duvets?

Just got off the phone a little while ago with HAL. Unfortunately, the new bedding will not be on Zuiderdam in Categories SS and below until some time in the fall of 2005. S and PS apparently already have it. Lucky dogs...I'm in an SS. Maybe I will have a very accomodating room steward who will snag some for me from another cabin. Doesn't hurt to ask!

No - our SS on the Westerdam didn't have a duvet but we had the white stripped sheet that is similar to the duvet cover and the coverlet (or whatever you want to call it) at the end of the bed.
