Has anyone cruised out of Norfolk. I am wondering how far away the airport is from the dock and if there is available transportation. Also, if anyone can recommend a hotel for the night before.

I'm staying at the Tazewell Hotel (757-632-6200). The rate was $69. It is 2 blocks for the Nauticus terminal, where the ship leaves. They told me the cab fare would be about $25 from the airport. Never been to Norfolk, but I did research on the web. The hotel looked like a well-maintained vintage property, grand.

There's a Marriott practically across the street from the dock. You could walk it if you don't have tons of luggage. I don't know about the cost.

I just checked the Marriott website. Do you think it is the Marriott Waterfronk on 235 E Main Street Norfolk, VA 23510 ? That one is $209, which would blow the savings I'll make on airfare. Do you know the Tazewell Hotel the previous poster mentioned? Are you from the area or did you just see that Marriott?

It does sound great. What that the same price range?

I am thinking it was a bit less...more like $150-$160, because I split it with a friend. Although this was a solo cruise for me, a friend was on the same sailing(we each had our own room) but we did share a hotel room. In fact, the cruise left Oct 31, and we stayed on Oct 30. I think I went through Orbitz. If you go to www.tripadvisor.com it has a engine that brings up several sites and you can comparison shop for the Marriott. Maybe you can find a better price that way.

The Norfolk airport is several miles from downtown. The waterfront area of Norfolk has a large tourist area with museums and shops as well as several hotels. Do a google search for Norfolk, VA and you'll get a ton of hits. I used to live in VA Beach and getting from the airport anywhere is fairly easy as there are taxis from the airport. Once you're in the waterfront area, most things are within walking distance. I'm not sure how far from the waterfront area it is to the cruise ships, but it can't be too far because that area is fairly compact. But, the airport is outside of downtown, actually closer to the Naval Bases in Norfolk. Staying in the waterfront area is going to be more than staying closer to the airport and bases. The City of VA Beach also butts up to Norfolk, but dont' think you're actually at the beach, because VA Beach covers a large area and is not like most beach towns. Anyway, one thing there is plenty of in the area is hotels.

Last year we stayed at the Marriott Waterside and it was perfect. We walked across the street so the kids could eat at Outback Steakhouse and the next morning, we walked to the Nauticus with our luggage. It is really only two short blocks. It was pretty cool that morning, but we all had light jackets.

I highly recommend the hotel, it was very nice and the staff were super. I believe we only paid $20 for the cab from the airport - that's not really much, especially for the four of us. The driver had a station wagon which accomodated all the luggage pretty well.

Thanks for any helpThe closest one with free parking is the Radison on Monticello Avenue. However, there have been posts on this board regarding the safety of the area. A number of people have stayed at, and given high marks to the Holiday Inn Select on Northampton Blvd. It's close to the airport, rather than the pier. They provided free shuttle to/from the pier, and also provided the shuttle for them to go to dinner the night ahead of the cruise.

Just returned from the Maasdam yesterday and the taxi fare from the pier was 21.25 for 3 people. It was cheaper to take a private cab than the airport shuttle. The shuttle fare was 15pp plus tip.
Hope this helps

I stayed at the Marriott Residence Inn. It's 5 minutes from the airport. I received free airport pick up, free shuttle to the ship and free shuttle to anywhere I wanted ! The Inn is less than 1 years old. I paid $89 and it included a decent free hot breakfast buffet. I had a 1 bedroom suite with kitchen. Excellent service.

I am not finding that on their website. Is it the Fairfield Inn? Do you have address or telephone #? It sounds great. Thanks for responding.
