are there any special or better verandas to book on the s class ships w/ HAL?
We had a special veranda on Celebrity last year that was the same price as normal verandas but it was double the size.

On the S class ships -- we always get the Deluxe Suite Verandah cabins:
I got this picture from Joanie's web site of what a Deluxe Verandah looks like:

I agree, no better than the deluxe suite verandas on an R or S class HAL ship. There isn't a bad one in the lot. :)

If you are not booking a suite but a regular verendah stateroom, the VD cabins on the Upper Promenade Deck are 1.5 feet deeper than all the other "V" category rooms on all other decks.

The OP is inquiring about the S class ships -- there are no cabins on the Upper Promenade Deck on these ships.

You know what -- OP hasn't come back -- maybe they were talking about the Signature Class ships.
They never did say which ship they were talking about.

"S" Class ships refers to the Statendam Sisters (Statendam, Maasdam, Ryndam and Veendam) and all of the verandas for those Deluxe Verandah suites are the same.
Also the same are the verandahs for Deluxe Verandah Suites on Zaandam, Volendam, Rotterdam and Amsterdam. Those ships are referred to as the "R" class ships.
Vista and Signature Class ships (Zuiderdam, Oosterdam, Westerdam and Noordam) and Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam Deluxe Verandah Suite verandahs are Not all exactly the same. They vary by location.

Aren't the new aft verandahs on the Veendam larger?

I am trying to find rooms for the Veendam.
The Celebrity board has lists of rooms from verandas to aft cabins that are listed the same price but have special aspects like bigger room or bigger veranda etc... Just wondering if there were any special rooms on the Veendam that I should look into booking for our trip.

I have been told Maasdam's aft pool is remaining untouched. That means they will not be extending Navigation Deck (where all the "S" Suites are located) so they remain the same. I don't believe there is any change being made to "S" Suites that involves steel. It is all decorating/soft goods etc
According to HAL site, before and after April 8 dry dock, Maasdam's "S" suite remain approx 575 sq ft as they currently show.
On Veendam and Rotterdam, they extended that deck back and raised the 'poolette' to Lido Deck.

pssst. Joanie.....
Just for the 'record'..... I have co-favorite ships (not that anyone cares or needs to know)...
Maasdam and Noordam ;)[/B]

The S class suites on the four Statendam class ships and the Rotterdam class ships (also four ships) are the absolute best of all of HAL's suites (except Penthouse) and give every other line a run for the money. There is the Neptune lounge (heaven) and wonderful huge verandas that accommodate a table for four plus wonderful chaise chairs. I have not found their equal. These accommodations are better than on the newer HAL ships which have narrower Verandas.

What is the Neptune lounge?

The Neptune Lounge is reserved for deluxe and penthouse suite passengers. Here's a cut and paste from the HAL website:
NEPTUNE LOUNGE
The "Suite Life" gets even sweeter in Holland America Line’s Neptune Lounge, which provide an intimate and relaxing retreat exclusively for suite and penthouse guests. The Neptune Lounge features a private place where they can relax, socialize with other suite guests and enjoy personalized service for making reservations for shore excursions, car rentals and the ship’s Pinnacle Grill alternative restaurant. The Neptune Lounge is a private room solely for suite and penthouse guests. This comfortable room provides a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy such refined pleasures as reading magazines, newspapers and books, viewing television on a wide screen or simply enjoying coffee or tea while socializing with other suite guests. The Neptune Lounge is open on sea days from 7:30 am until 8:30 pm and from 7:00 am until 8:30 pm on port days.
NEPTUNE LOUNGE CONCIERGE SERVICES
In addition to serving as an oasis of privacy, the Neptune Lounge also offers a variety of concierge services to make suite guests’ trip even more enjoyable and hassle-free. The following concierge services are available to our guests:
• Reservation requests for the Pinnacle Grill, Holland America’s popular alternative restaurant, which features the best of Northwest cuisine served in an upscale atmosphere. This dining venue is open to all guests on board.
• Assistance with all shore excursion reservations for the ports of call during your cruise. For express shore excursion bookings, kindly return your completed Shore Excursions Request form to the Neptune Lounge as soon as possible. Please note that some excursions may be sold out, but priority will be given to the suite Guests. Your vouchers will be delivered to your suite
• Any other inquiries, such as car rentals or restaurants in ports of call • All Front Office transactions and billing account services may be settled in the Neptune Lounge
• Enjoy continental breakfast, morning coffee or our tea selection served daily until 11am. We also serve espresso and cappuccino throughout the day.
• Cookies, small pastries and sandwiches are served daily from 11am to 5pm
• Lounge is not available for Private Functions
The only thing I'd add that seems to cause some confusion is that the Neptune Lounge is not a bar. The only time went there is alcohol in the Neptune Lounge is when they hold a welcoming cocktail party for suite passengers and even then that party is sometimes held in the Crow's Nest, not the Lounge.

Geez....sometimes I hate spell check....or maybe my brain. "Went" should be "when".....duh.

The Neptune Lounge is open from 7 AM until about 8:15 on most ships. The times may vary just a little from ship to ship.
I agree -- so many people think that they can get cocktails in the Neptune Lounge.
Quite a few times we have also had the Suite Welcome Aboard party in the Crow's Nest as well.

We got an S (#26 -Statendam) class with an upgrade on our last cruise and it was located right under and next the part of the Lido that juts out so with some effort those in the Lido could look down at the railing area of our balcony. They would not be able to see into the verandah area however.
So if total privacy is important when you put on that HAL robe and you want to lean on the railing with your cup of coffee to gaze out at sea or port, then you can be seen by those in the Lido who want to crane their necks your way. After the first day, we totally ignored it and I think so did the Lido diners.
I did end up loving the small snacks at the Neptune lounge for both breakfast and lunches, instead of going to the more crowded Lido or having a more formal dining experience in the MDR. The famous Neptune coffee machine was well used and there were always nice treats and chocolates available too.
But beyond those small Neptune dining amenities, we did not use the Neptune services for anything else, but did enjoy the suite's free laundry and extra private parties where those that attended did enjoy dressing up. We did especially enjoy the ease of the small setting for just chatting with other passengers. It was a nice perk.

I thing I forgot to say earlier was that as much as we like the Neptune Lounge it is not, in and of itself, enough to justify the additional expense of a qualifying suite. It is a nice perk and we throughly enjoy it but the real attraction is obviously the cruise in the first place and the wonderful cabin and veranda of an S category cabin. We only cruise once a year so it's our major annual vacation. We live a distance from any significant cruise port so getting to a cruise is an expense and not a small one at that. My wife still works and while she has very good vacation leave benefits a cruise still typical chews up 40-50% of her leave for the year. That means if we're going to go we're going to go for the gusto and that's an S category cabin when and where we can afford it.

We like the S class deluxe suites for the size of the veranda which is significantly larger IMO that those on the Vista or Signature ships. The Neptune Lounge is a nice perk and we find we use it more on an S class ship than the others because there are fewer deluxe suites and thus you may be closer to the Neptune Lounge.
