I've seen the pdf of the schedule for Signature of Excellence but I'm hoping to hear from someone who's recently been on the O'dam (Dakrewser???).

We're booked in a VA (aft :D ) for November and are REALLY looking forward to those new beds.

Please, please...someone tell me they're already on the O'dam....please!

AS far as I know it's in all the cabins, yes.

It was OK, I slept well, but the height of the new matteresses makes sitting on the bed tough even for me and I'm 6' - anyone under 5"6 would need a boost up to sit on it. And forget trying to read with the headboard embedded light.

So while the new bedding is comfortable, it's not without problems.

I'm 5'4" and didn't need a boost, but I'm used to being short so maybe it doesn't phase me. Anyway even if you have to leap onto the bed the comfort is worth it.

I do not believe the handicapped-accessible rooms have the new bedding.
We were on the Oosterdam after the new bedding was installed.
The beds in the accessible rooms are very low. I am 5'1 and the bed was low for me.

We have a tall bed rice bed, so I am use to it. However, I just recently received a set of bed stairs to help with getting into bed. My back has been bothering me and the task of getting in was painful. The stairs really help.

Too bad about the headboard light. Are there bedside table lamps?

Only in the penthouse. If you like to read in bed, I'd suggest a clip-on book light.

We had the new beds in our verandah cabin in December. I had to jump up a bit to get in as I'm 5'1. You MUST bring a clip-on book light if you want to read in bed. The position of the bed lights made it impossible to read in bed using them. This could have been due to the position we had our beds, but since you can find a light for a buck at dollar stores, why take a chance? I'm sorry I didn't bring one.

That stinks! I always read my Compass (that's what it is on RCCL - what is it on HAL?) before sleeping. :(

In this photo, http://www.ruderhaus.de/hal-west-kaupp/hal-west-kaupp29.htm what is that light above the bed and how is it turned on/off?

We were on the "O" October 2004 with the new bedding. Absolutely the best I have ever slept in.

We came home and bought the closest we could to the ones on the ship. We called HAL and they informed us that Sealy made that type strickly for HAL. The one we came up with is on a par with the one's on HAL. We were in an S Suite, but from what I heard everyone had them.

Enjoy,

Bill

That's connected to other ceiling/wall lights (although there is a switch for them next to the bed). If your cabinmate doesn't mind falling aslieep in a brightly lit room, you could read by it.

Click here (http://vquill.com/images/nitelite.bmp) to see the reading light I'm talking about. It's the thing within the yellow circle in this picture I "borrowed" from Steve at shipcafe.net.

The new bedding is absolutely worth the loss of the light. I'm 5'6" and had to give a little leap to sit up on the bed. But for some odd reason I enjoyed that.

All I know is, I slept like a baby. Absolute heaven...............

I found those lights to be about useless BEFORE the new mattresses...

That's one for the SOE Upgrade: removing those reading lamps and adding ones like this that would really be useful:

I see what you mean. No, DH doesn't mind going to bed with the light on. I do it all the time, in fact it is time to go read in bed right now. Nite all! :)

I think the Oosterdam always had the new beds. We sailed on her in Feb 04 and on Westerdam Feb 05. Same great beds. Yes, the lighting for reading in bed is weird on both ships.

Those lights could make some great mood lighting! :o

I have a question about the small storage areas. Is there any storage above the bedroom vanity (on either side of the mirror) in a SS stateroom? How about the bathroom. I would prefer to use the vanity/dressing table to apply makeup and fix hair, but I don't like to leave my things out on the vanity.

No - I keep my stuff in a makeup bag and put it in one of the drawers in the dressing table. Actually the lighting is much better in the bathroom than at the dressing table - I find the lights over/beside the vanity have a yellow cast to them.

The bathroom has 2 cabinets and a big shelf under the sinks. You could keep your stuff in a bag and put it on this shelf under the sink.

Bill - what kind of a mattress did you buy? We are in the market for a new one and would love something close to what HAL has. thanks.

I agree with Esme. There's something about the dressing table lights that were simply unusable for me. And I didn't like the make-up light either. I found the best light to be from the outside. If I looked okay in that, I was ready for anything.:D

I think I will buy an over-the-door hanging bag with see-thru pockets to put my make-up and other toiletries in. I like to keep things with-in easy reach. I use compartments, in a drawer at home, to keep my cosmetics in groups and seperate from one another (eye, face, lips, nail polish, etc.) I have been looking at the following Jewelry organizer and I think the size of the pockets would be perfect for holding small items (eye shadow, lipstick, mascara, cover sticks, creams, polish and q-tips.) It also had pockets that could hold the larger items.
It just makes items easier to locate when I am away from home. ;) I have not been able to find a make-up organizer that is all open like this.

I don't think I like the height of the bed. We have a high bed at home and it is kind of a pain. You can't just sit on it, you have to hop up on it. We had to add a small bench to our room furnishings so I have a place to sit down to put on boots or shoes. The bed is extremely comfortable, so we figured it is worth the small inconvenience.
