So, anyway, I was looking over a guide book to Venice, and I saw all these little boat symbols....and I said "Oh my goodness, every cruise line in the world must have it's own tender or dock here! We will never find the one for HAL!"
And then I looked closer....
and I saw what the boats mean....
they are all spots to catch the water taxi......:o
SOOOOOOOOOoooooooooo....anyway...does anyone know where you embark on HAL cruises leaving from Venice? I'd like to find a hotel close to that area if possible.
By the way, if you haven't guessed by the fact that I cannot tell a Vista from a vaporetto....this is our first cruise.
Thanks,
Emmie

Emmie,
HAL's ships dock at the cruise terminal which is past the station and Piazza Roma. Here is a link to where the ship docks.

The nearest good hotel to the terminal is the Venice Hotel Carlton and Grand Hotel which is close to the Station and also Piazza Roma where if you have luggage you can then catch a land taxi to the pier. The pier is within walking distance of this hotel but I wouldn't do it with luggage.

That was very helpful advice. We have two days in Venice before we cruise, so any information you have to share would be wonderful. I am especially interested in shopping :D My husband wants a good steak. Poor man, he hates seafood, and I am dragging him to the Med......

Eating out in Venice is not brilliant in that if you want a good meal it will cost you. We try to get out of the tourist area and go to little trattoirias. If you stay in the area near Piazza Roma, there are loads of eating places in that area and also near the Jewish Ghetto. You need to first of all buy a good map of Venice or buy a good guide book such as Eyewitness Venice and the Veneto.
We always stay near Piazza San Marco and we just catch the vaporettos to where we want to go and walk. Venice is a great walking city and if you are spending a couple of days there, I would suggest you buy a Vapouretto pass as it is invaluable, especially as it is your first time there. You can use it to go to the islands as well as to the Lido. Here is the website:

We adore Venice and have been there three times and still there is so much to explore.

Venice is a once in a lifetime experience unless you stay near the train station.
To appreciate the silence punctuated by the music of the canals one must dispense with the clash of the rails and the confusion of baggage that characterizes the Piaza le Roma.
Stay near the Rialto or San Marco, go to Harry's Bar for a Bellini and a Croque Mousieur, have a quick Prosecco in a wine bar, explore the local specialties at a Trattoria, etc.

A hotel that I highly recommend is the Hotel Manin which you can view at this link :

It has a great location and was very comparable in terms of price when I stayed there less than a year ago. The hotel was recently completely renovated and has fantastic amenities. I will book there again in a heartbeat upon returning to Venice.
