Congratulations on your upgrade, enjoy it. Still waiting for the upgrade fairy for our guarantee on 2/4. Will probably be a couple of more weeks before they come knocking at our door.

That's not an upgrade, but it is a nice deal. An upgrade will not cost you money, but an upsell will.

I've only been on a handful of cruises but its been my experience that you seldom get upgraded out of the type of room you purchased just moved to a better location. Outside to Outside, Verandah to Verandah.
Anytime I've jumped up in class its been an upsell. Sometimes they are good deals and sometimes they are not.
Booking guaranteed has worked to my advantage two out of three times I did it. One resulted in a very reasonable upsell to a Suite another moved me up two decks to a nicer Verandah. The one where it didn't work out was an outside cabin where we ended up on the Lower Promenade deck under the kitchen. Didn't like the window facing the deck and the noise from the kitchen went on all hours of the night.

If you book a Guarentee, there is a very good chance that you will be assigned (ie free) to a higher category. And insides to outsides do happen.
If you book a specific cabin, your chances of being upgraded for free apprear to be considerably less.
