I read on a review that the Amsterdam was going into dry dock in December 2010. Does anyone have any information on what is being done?

I do not have any Dry Dock listed as being scheduled for Amsterdam:confused:

Here is the list I have (as supplied just a week or so ago by another CC member)

• Ryndam: Feb. 9-Feb. 25, 2010, first phase; Spring 2013, second phase
3-day Caribbean roundtrip from Tampa, Feb. 25, 2010;
TBD, second phase

• Statendam: Mar. 26-Apr. 11, 2010, first phase; Dec. 2012, second phase
First Cruise: 14-day Southern Caribbean roundtrip from
Fort Lauderdale, Apr. 11, 2010; TBD, second phase

• Maasdam: Apr. 4-Apr. 24, 2011; Fall 2013, second phase
First Cruise: 13-day Canada/New England from
Fort Lauderdale to New York, Apr. 24, 2011, first phase; TBD, second phase

Following information provided by: trvlcrzy on 2 January 2011

The 2011 spreadsheet for HAL's fleet locations lists the following events. This in no way guarantees that some future changes won't occur!

Dry Docks for 2011 -- in date order... (I realize that some concerned folks want to know the difference between dry and wet docks... I am only using the term as listed in HAL's spreadsheet)

Volendam – March 31, 2011 through April 13, 2011 (in Singapore) before doing a Far East itinerary and a Trans-Pacific crossing to Alaskan itineraries

Eurodam – April 2, 2011 through April 11, 2011 (in Freeport, Bahamas) before the Trans-Atlantic sailing on April 12

Maasdam – April 8, 2011 through April 23, 2011 (in Freeport, Bahamas) before changing to New England/Canada itineraries

Veendam – April 15, 2011 through April 28, 2011 (in Freeport, Bahamas) before changing to the Bermuda itineraries

Oosterdam – September 25, 2011 through October 3, 2011 (in Victoria, BC) before changing to Mexican Riviera itineraries

Amsterdam was out of drydock weeks ago for the Holiday cruises.

As posted elsewhere, at a minimum the hull is washed and repainted below the waterline, the propulsion systems have maintenance done and the lifeboats/tenders have maintenance done while a ship is in drydock.

Other than that, probably not too much was done since San Francisco doesn't have the capability of major renovation work - They didnt' even paint the upper hull and superstructure of Zaandam when she was in drydock here last winter.

We went on the Zaandam last spring and it needed work... does the Amsterdam need work too? We are thinking of the 14 day in Alaska but being on a ship again that needs alot of work is not fun. Thanks for any info

New carpeting was laid throughout. Upholstery & draperies were refreshed/replaced as needed. Furnishings were refinished/replaced as needed. Something like 300 workers were coming aboard as we got off in San Diego. (We were on the last cruise before drydock.)

I've read elsewhere that the teak aft deck was replaced with a look-alike product.

I can't imagine that being true - There's no need.

A while after posting that, I remembered where I saw it: Bill & Mary Ann, currently aboard the Amsterdam for the world cruise, mentioned the deck being different in their Circumnavigate the Globe... (http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showpost.php?p=27433606&postcount=74) thread:

The old teak decking has been replaced with a look-alike deck. It appears to have the seams, but it is one piece, so there should be no leaking or lifting planks anymore.

Then that's a dam shame - I wonder why they didn't simply repair the wood?

Because a ship goes into drydock doesn't mean it will be Veendamized.
