I confess to being a nervous, white-knuckled passenger when my bus is negotiating narrow, winding, hairpin turns with sheer drops at the side of the road (recalling the bus trip into the redwood forests north of San Francisco). What are the roads like from Anchorage to Denali?

Wide open spaces. Good highway. No sheer cliffs.

I confess to being a nervous, white-knuckled passenger when my bus is negotiating narrow, winding, hairpin turns with sheer drops at the side of the road (recalling the bus trip into the redwood forests north of San Francisco). What are the roads like from Anchorage to Denali? We were on the bus from Denali to Seward, which doesn't quite get into Anchorage before it goes east and south. I don't recall any hairpin turns or drop-offs, since we were basically down in the valley looking up at the mountains most of the time. Probably the biggest drop we saw was crossing a bridge somewhere.
If hairpin turns and drops bother you, don't ever go to the Amalfi Coast! I loved it, but my DW was a little nervous about it. :)

Also, with what you said, I would not recommend the White Pass rail tour out of Skagway if you stop there on the ship.

We rented a car and drove from Anchorage to Denali. Wide open highway, beautiful scenery. No white knuckles here.

If you're planning a bus trip into Denali, you're just going to love Polychrome Pass.
