I had faxed a copy of these questions to HAL's Seattle headquarters about 3 weeks ago and had no response. I called HAL today to ask them about their Platinum Insurance and was referred to CSA who handles these matters for them. I asked them the following questions:

Question 1- If we require medical care onboard or ashore do we have to pay for it out of our funds and seek reimbursement afterwards or does our Platinum coverage pay immediately?

Answer: You pay out of your own funds and seek reimbursement afterwards. The Platinum insurance is secondary to any health insurance that you may have. So, you seek reimbursement from your health plan and then send in a claim to CSA with the benefit forms from your plan and they will pay the difference. I believe that most trip insurance is secondary to the insureds own health insurance.

Actually, we have needed care at a hospital in Scotland and ships personnel made all of the arrangements. They provided the transportation and we paid with our credit card and were reimbursed by our health plan. We didn't need the trip insurance in this case.

Question 2- If we require air evacuation do we have to pay out of our own funds immediately and seek reimbursement afterwards, or does our Platinum coverage pay for us immediately?

Answer: CSA provides you with the contact information for their On-Call Service who will make all scheduling and financial arrangements for your air evacuation. You are not required to pay out of pocket for this service or for the actual air evacuation.

Question 3- To what extent do HAL PERSONNEL provide assistance in getting immediate emergency medical care and evacuation - e.g. we are on a ships tour ashore and have an accident.

Answer: Ships personnel will provide all necessary medical care on-board ship and tour personnel will help while ashore. CSA's On-Call Service will provide any other necessary assistance.

Question 4- If we are in a foreign country that requires immediate payment for medical care before release of the patient, and we don't have enough funds with us and available at that time, what immediate help does HAL Platinum insurance/HAL personnel provide to us?

Answer: Either ships personnel or On-Call Services will make arrangements for payment for medical care in this situation.

We were on a tour in Brazil and one of the passengers fell and was injured. The hospital refused to release her until they were paid in cash. Ships tour personnel went back to the ship and drew funds against her account and then went back to the hospital and paid for her release. I believe that her insurance repaid her later.

I am neither pro or con about HAL's Platinum Insurance, "just the facts ma'am" :)
