When was the last time Zuiderdam was in dry-dock? I've read some reviews from December 2004 where comments were that carpet was quite worn, fabric on furniture worn, paint chipping, etc. Does anyone know if this would have been before or after the last dry dock or refurbish? Or when does she go in next? Thanks.

She was brand new Dec 2002. I have no idea how often ships are dry-docked, but I will be going on the Z on 2/19/05. If you don't have an answer by the time I return 2/26/05, I'll have an answer for you then.

According to http://www.hollandamerica.com/pdfs/SOE_update.pdf (http://www.hollandamerica.com/pdfs/SOE_update.pdf)
the Zuiderdam will have some work done Fall 2005. I know that when the Zaandam went through her SOE upgrade she received at least "some" new carpeting. Perhaps this may be the case for the Zuiderdam as well???

No need for a dry dock for replacement of some carpet or other decorative elements. As I understand it, dry dock is for large mechanical repairs.

Large areas such as atria, DR or show lounges or large numbers of cabins are done when the ship is in wet dock. Hallways can be done while the ship is at sea, on days when the ship is in port, or even at night.

I sailed the Z the week after their drydock in December 2004. Except for some shoddy exterior painting, everything was in good shape.

The drydock was to correct vibration problems with the engines, which worked fine. I did not notice any at all, anywhere in the ship.

The main problems with that ship are the poorly designed auditorium, and the K-mart atrium. Both looked like they were designed by Jethro Bodine. Beyond that, it's pretty nice.

Well, there are rumblings aboard about drydock and that it will possibly be in Freeport, Bahamas...but the people I talked to didn't have an exact date. The Rotterdam will be in Freeport for drydock April 23rd.
