In my garage I found a long lost copy of the San Francisco Blue Book of 1927; the Social Register of the day.
Browsing through it there was a full page ad by HAL. It shows all their cruises including New Orleans to Havana... one for the future?

What a wonderful memory -- ad -- you have there -- priceless.

Thanks for sharing.

My mother went to Cuba -- but not on HAL -- I know I'll never see the day a cruise ship stops there.

That's not complete true...Costa and Fred olsen and Thompson cruises are stopping in Havana this year. It was all over the news on CNN over the past couple of weeks.
But any cruiseline that appears to be "Americanized" would never be allowed to dock. I am shocked that Costa goes there since Carnival Corp owns Costa but they are perceived as being an Italian cruiseline catering mostly to Europeans.

What would happen if am American was aboard a cruise that called on Cuba? Would they have to just stay on the ship?

Nope they are free to go ashore as well. In fact American's are welcomed and well received all over Cuba. Half of our Air Canada daily flights from Toronto and Montreal to Havana and Holgin are half full with Americans. When they arrive in Cuba the Cuban Government purposely does not stamp there passports directy but rather a seperate loose page. Just as when you go to Israel they do not stamp our passports in case after you go to a muslim country and then are given a hard time for being in Israel....than has happened to me and others holding Canadian and American passports.

What I find interesting is that HAL was actually doing cruising for the fun and relaxation of cruising in 1927. Whenever I have heard of the history of cruise lines it has always been that prior to about the 1960's we had ocean liners for transportation; point A to point B. This throws a whole new light on it.
