I asked this question before because my husband likes to keep beer in the room for "cocktail hour" while getting ready for dinner. I was told "yes." Another option is the in-room Beverage Package. You can order 6 domestic beers for $15 - $16 to be delivered to your room. :)

On all of their ships with the Carnival logo....
Why the sarcastic remark? The poster was just asking a question. I realize that HAL offered a different experience in the past (and still does on their other ships), but the Zuiderdam is attracting a different demographic. I respect that some people want a more sedate experience and do not make sarcastic comments about people who chose that. I think the respect should go both ways.

Did you say a "sarcasm" smiley in my response (this one  )? Didn't think so, as I always put that in my sarcastic rejoinders. In case you weren't aware, both Carnival and HAL are owned by the same corporation. Carnival's ships feature buckets of beer around the pool. HAL's do not. If "buckets of beer" (that is, 4-6 bottles already opened as opposed to the 6-pak of unopened bottles that HAL's beverage service will deliver) is important, then it's better to sail with Carnival.
Do you have some problem with either Carnival or HAL? Some hidden agenda here? Or are you simply easily offended? [look: there's that sarcasm indicator!]

They were 6 Miller Lites for $15. You could get Budweiser as well. We got them from room service to keep in the fridge in the room.

Actually I think the title could be a red flag for traditional HAL lovers. I saw it and will confess that my first thought was "sign up for Carnival". Now instead if the title had been gallons of cheap wine I would have been wondering where to sign up for the special !!
For the record, if you saw someone recently strolling through some of the ports in Mexico trying to bargain down prices for Corona (almost free!!!), that would be me.

Why bash all the beer drinkers? Come on folks, it's a cruise! Some of us like to kick back and have a few beers by the pool, geez!!!
To answer this question -
YES - they sell beer by the bucket. It is a great deal, we like to get the Corona bucket, sometimes they even have a special price for them, but they are still cheaper than buying them individually!

Ekerr, is that something new? I didn't notice they did that on the Rotterdam last year, but then again, I am not a beer drinker. I still like the idea of buying so many glasses of wine for a certain price. Hope they have those onboard the Zuiderdam and Volendam.

For the record I am not trying to change HAL's demographic. I just wanted to know if I would be able to order a few beers, kept cold together in a bucket, while relaxing by the pool or while out on deck. While I am on vacation I enjoy drinking some beers during the day. I hope I did not offend any tradational HAL clients. I am intending to go on this cruise and relax, but if my ordering a few beers during the day is going to bother anyone then perhaps I picked the wrong cruise for my group ages 25-70. I choose HAL because DW and I love the tradational cruise features that HAL offers. I have been on Carnival and do not want to enjoy what they have to offer again. I enjoyed Carnival when I was 22 but I loved my last few Princess and RCI cruises and thought HAL would be an upgrade. But if me drinking a few beers while on deck is going to bother my fellow passengers than I have defintely chosen the wrong line. I hope this is not the case. Joe V.

doone- I am really excited about the wine by the glass option, but to answer your question - yes, we've gotten beer by the bucket on almost every cruise, starting with our Amsterdam Panama Canal Holiday cruise in 2000. Sometimes we have to ask the bartender to fix us up a bucket and they always do - and discount the price a bit - sometimes it is a special of the day.
Also, we have only ordered this from the Lido pool area bars, not in the Crow's Nest or Ocean Bar... or any other inside bar.

There were no buckets of beer on the O'dam last month. Well, there was in the Queen's Lounge but only during the football game.
And, for the record, no one got bashed! Certainly not by this beer drinker (right now, in my fridge, you'll find some Tecate, Moosehead, Negra Modelo, Guinness and Newcastle Brown). WE did buy a "bucket of beer" at the No-name cafe in Puerto Vallarta, though.
Anngie: buying a 6-pack for your fridge isn't the same as a "bucket of beer" (which are delivered opened).
MetathoraX: I've never partaken of the juice of the "dried plum" (can't call them prunes any more, at least in California) and if I want bottled water it'll be Evian, but the stuff from the tap is good enough for me.

Dave - sometimes we have to ask, and we've only asked at the Dolphin Bar or whatever the Lido pool bar is called on various ships... they put them in a metal bucket filled with ice and you can take them to your lounge chair. Some ships have the baby Coronas which I prefer, sometimes it's hard for me to finish one before it gets warm. :)

One the Volendam in late November, there was a sign sitting at one end of the Lido Pool Bar....."Bucket of Beer $12.95.
They did not seem to be doing a big voulme in buckets, but they were available.
On Carnival last week, there were buckets sold by the bucket-load! Empty beer cans and buckets of empty beer cans everyhere from one end of the Lido deck to the other.

I'm not a big beer drinker, but I choose the "bucket of beer" in Jan/2005 about half way through my cruise because the mixed drinks were so watered down on NCL Majesty.

Anngie: buying a 6-pack for your fridge isn't the same as a "bucket of beer" (which are delivered opened).
Not true. My DH drinks Coors in a can and they have never been opened, nor do we want them opened. He will take them back to the room, get out the small collapsable cooler, tip the steward a $20 to keep ice in the cooler and have one beer on the veranda before dinner . :) The six will last a 7 day cruise because we sometimes head up early and have cocktails in a lounge. We don't drink beer out on deck while sunning, because we prefer to have a "fun" drink. We order a bottle of wine with dinner.
Isn't there a minibar in all the cabins with beer in it?
I don't know if there is beer in the mini bar or not, because we never open the bars, but chances are that the beer isn't Coors. ;)
PS - I will let you know about the buckets when I return from the Oosterdam in three weeks.

Our buckets of beer were not opened - the Lido attendant came by periodically and asked if we wanted a bottle or two opened, otherwise I walked one up to the bartender.
The fridge in the Suite on the Zui was small - I think there were one or two types of beer and a small selection of liquors and a soda or two and water.
I don't think we used the mini bar fridge for anything except our coursages for formal night. :)

Aboard the O last fall ... no dark beer.
:-(
But they did sell buckets o' beer on the barbecue night. I didn't go to the barbecue, so I don't know what brands were involved.
Negra Modelo is one of my favorites, but my #1 beer is Blackened Voodoo Lager from N'awlins.
As for the perceived slight way back at the start of the thread ...
It appears that whenever someone says something remotely controversial, along the lines of "I paid for this cruise, I'll wear what I please in the dining room," the person is told to sail on Carnival.
Thus, the mere mention of the "C-word" tends to come across as condescending.

This post has me remembering a very funny moment. We sailed on Carnival 6 years ago with 23 people. Carnival wasn't our first choice, but we had 3 families of 5 and 2 families of 4. Carnival was the only line that would let us put 5 in a cabin. Anyway, back to the buckets of beer. My DH and I would get a bucket of 4 Coronas by the pool everyday. I do not drink very fast and do not like warm beer, so this was a nice way to keep beer cold while you were drinking it. I would just stick it back in the bucket of ice. I have read numerous posters saying to bring an insulated mug for your beverage. The bucket of ice is much better than an insulated mug. They should sell buckets of soft drinks by the pool. Anyway, our friends thought the bucket was pretty funny. My husband retired from the Navy shortly after the cruise and we had a retirement party. One of the couples we cruised with presented my husband with a bucket of coronas with lime sticking out of the top. They placed a bag over the bucket of beer and gave a speech about his arm being sore from cradling the bucket for a week. Everyone laughed.
I am sorry that some people think a bucket of beer is a bad thing. I thought it was very convenient in the hot Caribbean sun. My husband also asked if they sold buckets of beer. He certainly would not book a cruise if they didn't, but we enjoy ice cold beer by the pool. I will be sure and let everyone know if they do sell them on the Zaandam in March. I might even take a picture of him holding one for our friends.

On the Westerdam 1/9, buckets of beer (Miller Lite, Coors Lite, Corona) were for sale. These were NOT opened. Unfortunately this didn't last long - first and maybe second day?, but throughout the cruise they did have 2 for 1 at bingo every day. That is a nice way to save a $ or two! :p

Gang,
Don't forget about the all you can drink Pina Coladas ($11.95 I think) on BBQ night. The most delicious I've ever had, served in a hollowed out pineapple! I am typically a beer drinker and had pre-ordered the 6 pack of Coronas for our cabin along with a bottle of "sail away" champagne when we arrived. We met up with some friends and I ordered a Bucket of Corona's at the Lido pool for sail away as well. At disembarkation I still had a couple of unopened beers left in our cabin for the room steward. They (HAL) were extremely accomodating in the Brew department!:D Nancy

Why yes, they do. But you'll need to get your cabin steward to clean out the fridge so that there's room to put them in.

We just got back from the 2/17-2/27 Maasdam cruise. They had buckets of beer (5 to a bucket) available all of the time the bars were open, at least from the Dolphin Bar and the one by the outside pool on Nav deck. The deal was $12 for a bucket of domestic (coors bud, miller), and, $13.95 (I think) for premium (amstel, corona, heineken, beck's, molson). I ordered the mixed buckets of premium all 10 days and requested them to not open the bottles until I wanted to drink them.
The buckets were the way to go, as i just brought the leftovers back to the room & iced them for the next day. That is on those days where I actually had any beer leftover...
PS - there were at least two of us sitting with our buckets all afternoon at one of the pools on sea days, so, enjoy :)

It IS funny how this thread stuck in my head. Every time I walked by the buckets of beer for sale at both the Lido and aft pools on the Zaandam last week, I thought of fcowher, and how I needed to post this when I got back. So that means I thought of this thread no fewer than 25 times!
But someone beat me to it! It was five to a bucket, and they had them all lined up waiting to be purchased - with limes available for them too. I just didn't check the price, unfortunately. Sorry fcowher!

They sold buckets of beer for the March Madness Basket ball games. It was perhaps $12 for 5 Coronas. They had set out nachos and chips and dip and had the game going in the Northern Lights night club area. Most people sat at the "sports bar" area across the corridor however. I thought it was very nice, very apropos for a game night.

Last week on the local news they were interviewing a priest from San Francisco about papal memories. It seems this priest had been in charge of food & beverage at the cathedral in San Francisco at the time the pope visited in the late 80's.
So the pope was having dinner at the Cathedral residence with the cardinals and monsignori. According to this priest, all of the major wineries in California had shipped in their finest wines in the hope that the pope would find favor with them. As the meal was about to begin, the priest walked up to the pope and asked: "Your Holiness, what would you like to drink?" The Pope thought a moment, then said, "I'd like to have a beer." Well, there was never beer at the cardinal's table, but the priest remembered that, some time before, one of the servants had brought in a six-pack to be offered to some men who were working in the yard. As he headed for the garden refrigerator, the priest prayed over and over, "please, Lord, let their be one beer!" There was one can left...

The answer is yes. We bought them twice on the Westerdam in December.
They were 6 Miller Lites for $15. You could get Budweiser as well. We got them from room service to keep in the fridge in the room.
Thanks for this info. We drink only beer. Don't like liquor or wine, so it's good to know we can get it this way and enjoy it on our verandah.

Good question! There was a small list somewhere (on this thread? or another?), but I would suspect that they have more selection. Be nice if there were Czech ones, ones from the UK, ones from Germany... DH would be in Heaven with all those (nasty, IMO) imports.

can't wait for the buckets this time, Veendam had them poolside last year and what a treat. Does anyone ever bring beer in their suitcase or just a suitcase with beer? I keep hearing about this being done and it's just checked through, no problem. We have always bring wine for our stateroom with no probem and I know that's permitted.
