I just need clarification. In looking at the deck plan for the Zuiderdam, I was not finding the movie theatre. Is the "screening room" the same thing?

Yes -- the screening room is the movie theatre -- very limited seating -- about 30 seats I think on that ship.

How often to they show movies in it? I was on a RCL ship a few years ago that had a screening room and it was totally underused. At most, they would show one movie a day and if we were in port, thats when it was shown.

Since the screening room is used only for showing movies -- they show them all day long starting about 10 AM with the last movie anytime between 8 and 10 PM.
So there are 4 - 5 showings a day.
Usually the movies are packed on HAL because there are so few seats on the ships that have the dedicated screening room.
On the R and S class ships that have the Wajong theater there are many, many more seats -- but the number of movies shown in a day are limited as this is also the Culinary Arts Center.
The Westerdam doesn't have either a screening room or a Wajong Theater -- so once in a while a movie is shown in the Queen's Lounge (also the Cuminary Arts Center) -- but they are mostly shown in either the Hudson Room or the Half Moon Room -- and not all day.

When we were on Zuiderdam in 2007, it didn't have a Screening Room. Where is it located?

It is on the promenade deck towards the bow of the ship right past the last of the shops. On our Panama canal cruise you had to arrive early if you wanted a seat. I ended up watching most of one movie either standing up, leaning against the wall or trying to sit on the floor, which wasn't very comfortable.
I used to like it when HAL had bigger movie theaters and you could get a seat without arriving very early.
Have a great next cruise.

The Marabella shop and the screening room on the Zuiderdam is in the area where the internet cafe used to be located on the promenade deck -- also in this area was Java Cafe -- never open.

Dumb question: what is the difference....or is it just to sound more pretentious ?

There's no difference - It 's simply a glorified Media Room.

Basically the new screening rooms hold about 1/3 the number of people that the old theaters did. Given the demographics of the HAL passengers it doesn't make sense except the cruise lines don't make money while you are sitting watching a movie for 2 hours or so. That is my opinion why many cruise lines don't have movie theaters at all and why HAL reduced the size of their's on their new ships. IMHO
Have a great next cruise.

How recent are the films on board? Recent dvd releases or newer than that?

Tell me about the screening room or movie theatre on the ms Amsterdam. How frequently are movies shown, particularly on a World Cruise? Are there established times? What about on port days? What movies are being shown NOW on the World Cruise approaching Australia?

Actually, the Queen's Rooms aboard the Vistas were intended to do double-duty as the Movie Theatre in the afternoons and a Cabaret Lounge in the evenings...
...but they rarely scheduled any events in there and folks complained about the sightlines to the screen from the seats in the round room - plus HAL added the Culinary Arts center to the stage, taking time away from the movies.
Meanwhile the Internet room was underutilized in it's space as was the starboard annex to the Crow's Nest, and the Java Cafe was never open - so HAL moved the computers, library & coffee bar upstairs creating the Explorations Cafe which cleared the Promenade Deck spaces for the Screening Room & another Jewelry Shop.
(This is for the original 3 Vistas only - This doesn't apply to Noordam, and the Signatures were originally configured in this manner)

When we were on Zuiderdam in 2007, it didn't have a Screening Room. Where is it located? It's directly across from the Hudson room, on the starboard side. In Spring 2008 when the "aft lift" was done, the area that used to hold the Merabella luxury shop, other shops, and the library were revised. The Merabella is now futher back, and the Screening Room is there now.

Movies are shown in the Wajang Theatre on the Amsterdam. It doubles as the Culinary Arts Center. Religious services are also held there.
The floor slopes down, and the seats are off-center to the one in front, so there are good sight lines.

Notice what I said in red -- the Amsterdam is an R class ship.
Fewer movies on these ships because the Wajan Theatre is used for so many things. Movie times change daily because of the various activities. Check your Explorer daily program each day.
