More observations from the GEM.

The crew is very attentive to everyone from what I can see. When you are on deck or looking for something they are always glad to help and greet everyone with a smile. They have no way of knowing where you are staying. Yes there are people that treat the crew with disrespect and talk down to them with the attitude that some people get when they pay a lot of money for a service. To my way of thinking they are the worst snobs in the world. Everyone has a job to do and they do it to the best of their ability even when they are treated with bad attitude. I don't know how they can smile at these people everyday.
The only crewmember that I found was not helpful was the internet manager. If you asked him a simple question he acted like it was a big effort to give an answer.
For those of you that are debating on spending the extra money for the suite life, let me assure you that it is worth it IMHO. My DH and I work hard at 2 jobs all year and we like to be pampered on vacation. For people that really cannot afford or justify paying for a suite, you can experience some of the good life by eating in the specialty restaurants at night. We ate in the Grand Pacific dining room last night and will not make that mistake again.

For us the difference in price between a HAL SC suite plus the cost of airline tickets, taking extra time off work to get to the port 1 day early plus hotel and meals more than makes up for paying for a suite plus specialty restaurants every night.

We are in an AD romance suite. The new category for this suite will be SF. It is just about the size of SC 6166 that we had on the Noordam without the wrap around balcony. This suite only sleeps 2. There is no pull out couch.

Some of the things that I miss about HAL are
The unlimited laundry service. It was wonderful going home with mostly clean clothes.
HAL's ships are definitely more stately and elegant than NCL. It takes awhile to get used to very loud colors.
I like having a set time for dinner and sitting with the same people each evening, but I also like eating in a different restaurant every night . Having the Neptune Lounge to relax and have a little snack is very nice, but having a concierge like Ryan and also a butler is also very appreciated.

For our M&G the Captain and the heads of each department was there. They all introduced themselves told us their responsibilities on the ship and what thier extension # was if there were any problems. It was a nice touch.

Thank you for your interesting reports.
What was the problem with your dining experience that you will not return to that dining room?

I am going to speculate here but probably just the quality, it is not horrible, in my opinion I thought it was equal if not slightly better the Royal Caribbean but with that being said. With NCL it is really all about going to a different speciality restaurants every night. In most categories NCL is cheaper than HAL so if you take into account what you save sailing on NCL and put that money toward eating in the specialty restaurants like Le Bistro then in my opinion the entertainment on NCL is definitely superior to many of the other cruise lines you then have a really good cruise. But if you go with NCL playing it cheap, and not spending a little bit more money by eating in the different speciality restaurants then that is what you are going to get a cheap experience with good entertainment.:D Although based on my recent experiences I would rate NCL way above RCCL.

Thanks knitlady - glad you started another thread. :o

I hope you have the time/opportunity to keep posting. Really appreciate the comparison from someone who knows HAL suites (ditto, LAFFNVEGAS).

If you have time to reply: does the bed split into twins?

The Grand Pacific seemed very noisy and chaotic. Large crowd to get thru just to get in. My food was not good(beef stroganoff) my DH had the turkey. His was just OK. we did not stay for dessert and later went to Blue Lagoon and had a quick sandwich. Lisa you are right on with your observations.
Today is Puerto Rico and we are doing the biolumenesent eco tour. I don't think I will be posting today. Will try again tomorrow.

Patricia, unfortunately in the aft suite former category AF now SE category those beds are full King sizes bed that do not split. Think that is why they called them Romance Suites :D

By the way Blue Lagoon is also a free dining area that is like a 24 hour diner that is open like 21 or 22 hours but this area has really good food. Tom loved the chicken fingers and the hamburgers are really good.

Hello everyone, today we ate lunch in the garden cafe. Decided to try it there as the ship is pretty empty while in port. I have to say, if there was a choice to eat in there or the grand pacific, I would choose the garden. The food and selection was very nice. Every thing was fresh and hot.

A note to Joanie- if you want to book an aft suite, I don.t know if any are handicap accessable. If I recall correctly I thought that is what you need.
The bathrooms are much smaller than HAL's and to get into the shower is a little difficult. The side of the tub is high. Plus it is seperated into three seperated into 3 sections. My Dh feels tight in there.
Went on the bioluminesence tour last night. Was a very unique experience. If anyone needs a reliable cab driver you can contact me I have the # of a very good one.

hope to be able to post again soon

You're certainly right about NCL's main dining rooms. They leave a lot to be desired.

Seems to me that with NCL, it's all about moving passengers to an upsell restuarant.

Yes but in most cases NCL is less money than HAL so if you take that into consideration use the money you save toward the speciality restaurants you pay about the same amount but with very nice dining in their premium restaurants. Another nice touch is that NCL has in all their categories Elemis Bath products just like HAL. RCCL, Princess, and even Celebrity do not have nearly as nice bath products. The worst being RCCL and Princess. It is nice to go on NCL and know what to expect. The have a liqud hand and face soap at the sink that is wonderful that I wish HAL would also use. I have only seen it used in the Green House Spas on HAL.
