Hi all,

We are going on the Oosterdam to the Mexican Riviera on March 5 and we are wondering if there are any outlets for lamps/reading lights near the bed? So many of the cruise ships have totally inadequate lighting for reading in bed. Could anyone shed some light on this (lol) for us? Thanks!

There is an outlit by the bed - right next to the modum. Take an extension cord if you want light on the far side of the bed.

The new bedding is so high that it covers up the built in reading lights.

Interesting! I was about to answer that they have nice reading lights at the head of the bed. Never thought about the new Eurotop mattresses covering them up.

Well, the mattresses don't actually cover them, but a pillow will, as in this picture (http://vquill.com/images/nitelite.bmp) modified from ShipCafe.com

So glad I read this. I hadn't thought about the lighting by the bed. Perhaps I'll get on of those little personal reading lights you attach to book to read by while in bed.

Dave, YOU are an incredible source of information!! Where DO you find all these photos and websites? Thank you so much for all the different resources you've passed along to all of us!:)

This morning I checked the wave conditions at sea where my parents are cruising--thanks to your assistance in helping me find the website!

Recently died Ephraim Kishon, an Israel satirist. His stories were very popular in Germany. In German tv he told one time, that because of the poor light in European hotels, he always travels with a 500 watt bean.
O.k., with 500 watt you can burn a hotel down, but sometimes I think only a replace of a 60 watt bean to an 80 watt one would help.

In a book I just read by Bill Vryson, the travel writer, he claims that European "tourist class" hotels all have one single 20-watt bulb per room. :)

May be, an European tourist hotel you have to leave in the morning, and coming again in the evening you have to sleep. You need only a security light.
I remember the hotel in London within Victoria Station 15-20 years ago. I was leaving in the morning for some work and my wife was still staying in the hotel room. After a while she went to the reception "It' s going to be cold" and got the answer "The central heating will be turned on again at 6 pm".
Next time we went to the Tower Hotel.
