We already have travel insurance for the cruise, but we have booked out hotel ourselves for our trip to Alaska in July. Found out about the super rate at the Pan Pacific for $179 a night. BUT it's non-refundable. We need trip cancellation for that part of the cruise (hotel)ONLY. When I priced it with Travel Guard, it was an extra $75 for 3 nights ($625 total hotel expense). I don't need medical or flight evacuation--just something to cover the hotel expense in case we have to cancel for a covered reason. Does anyone know of a basic policy and insurance company that you can recommend that might be cheaper???

Thanks so much. You all are experts and the best resource available.

Is the hotel cancellation policy that ALL three nights are non-refundable or just the first night's bill?

Who is the cruise insured with? HAL? A third party? With a third-party insurer youshould be able to add the cost to your existing policy and just pay any additional premium.

You can find a cancellation-only policy here -- the LITE plan from iTravelInsured:

www.travelprotect.com/iti.php

Seems to work out to about $28

Check what the Pan Pacific's cancellation policy is- probably only the first night with no penalty until 24 hrs before you are due to arrive. I'm sure that would be on their website. That's pretty standard for all hotels. So you really are only risking $75. Probably not worth insuring a potential $75 loss for only 24 hrs. Chances are you would know you had to cancel long before 24 hrs before your cruise.

Are you getting just the first night at $179 or each of the 3 nights at $179 ? And is this through HAL?

Just asking as the rules vary according to whom you have made the reservation through.

If you did book directly through Pan Pacific -- call and ask them if this applies to one or all three nights.

The price is $179 per night--and we have booked 3 nights--then add in tax. The loss is more than just one night since this states that it is non-refundable and we paid for all 3 nights.

I will try that Lite policy through Travel Insured and let you all know what I find out.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I guess it is too late now, but was the refundable option that much more?

I checked on that and the refundable rate was $309 per night as compared to $179. So for that difference, I guess I can afford to buy the travel insurance that covers pre-existing conditions. We can just add the amount of the hotel on to that initial coverage and we will be taken care of through Travel Guard.

I forgot to mention that this hotel was NOT through HAL--I booked independently. Even with insurance, we will save $100 a night over the cruise company Pre-cruise.

I appreciate everyone's interest, information and advice.

Would it be possible to add this on to your existing travel insurance you purchased? Perhaps you can call customer service and ask... may not be too much more and easier to have just one policy. Doesn't hurt to inquire.
