Can anyone tell me how far the airport is from the port in San Diego?:) Does anyone know the cab fare?

5 minutes or so. I have read on this site it's about $10. It's right off the same street as the pier, and just curves around the bay.

We took a taxi from the airport to the Hampton Inn that's about 2 blocks from the cruise terminal. It was $8 and change, plus tip. It's about a mile or so around the curve to the N. Very close. From on the ship, you can clearly see the runways. It's easy and fast.

In Dec. cab ride from airport to the Holiday Inn directly across from the pier was $7.10 + tip (not even a thank you) and on our return to the airport from the pier was $6.90 + tip (with a thank you from the driver).

FYI - both the Hampton and Holiday Inn hotels by the cruise ship terminal have free schuttle service to/ftom airport and the cruise ship.

I live in San Diego and find the cab drivers to be extremely rude and especially ungrateful if they have a short fare. I once took a cab from the train station home which is walking distance but it was at night and I didn't feel safe. The cab driver complained and complained about the fare not being long enough and when he got to my condo, popped the trunk and wouldn't take out my luggage. I took out my luggage but didn't close the trunk. He was so mad that he had to get out to close the trunk. Unfortunately, I had already tipped him before he refused to get the luggage out.

The time we went into San Diego and on down to the Hampton Inn, it was too late for their shuttle (I think it stops at 11PM, but not sure), so we had to do the taxi. That guy was OK. On two other occassions where we took the cab from the terminal to the airport, the drivers (from the middle east) were quite indifferent. What's worse, is that some of the drivers out near the road in front of the terminal didn't even want us in their cabs. We went to several before one took us. The same thing happens in Tampa at the airport. The drivers sit in a line that's really long for their next chance at an airport fare. If the person only wants to go a short distance, they moan and groan the whole time. People I work with have encountered that a lot when going from the airport to our nearby office. They need to take the good with the bad.

I work in downtown San Diego and often take the cab from the airport to downtown. I have NEVER run into an angry or unfriendly driver. Sometimes they have limited English skills and are quiet. Go to the first cab in line, get in and then tell them where you are going. At the airport there is a dispatcher who sends out the cabs at the head of the line. If anyone refuses to take you, complain loudly. They can lose their cab license for such conduct.

Cauvet, thanks for the warning.

I think if I take a cab in SD I'll go to the back of the cab and wait there. If the driver wants to get paid or receive a tip, he'll have to meet me out there.

Good advice. We have run into these attitudes about "short fares" in other cities and usually base our tip on the attitude as well as the service. Their job is to provide transportation, even if it is around the block. Maybe they will figure it out someday.:)
