Hi guys!

I'm just wondering what's the best bet for parking while we're on the O in November...

Do any of the hotels offer a "stay & park" package...like they do at so many airport hotels?

If not, is there a good, secure parking structure near the pier...and what are the rates?

We'll be driving down from Orange County and just looking for the best option.

Thanks!

Tiffany

Many of the people we know have stayed at the Holiday Inn which is right across from the pier where the ship docks. And some people have driven and parked their cars there - check with the hotel as to their rates.

The parking lot that is right next to the pier is no longer available to cars - security reasons.

There is a parking lot right across the street - between the pier and Holiday Inn - do not know their rates - but it didn't look secure to me when we were there.

The lot right across the street from the pier is $12 a day. It seems very secure. If you park over near the aiport, there are lots for $8 or $10 a day. The $8 lot is just west of the airport on Harbor Drive. Drive to the airport but don't take any of the marked exits. At the first light after the airport, turn right and you enter the lot. This is lot we use when we fly out of San Diego, and it is very secure.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn on the Bay, across from the cruise pier last April for one night before a 10-day cruise. They had a parking package for $100 for two weeks, which was, on a "per day" basis for us, $10/day-so we took it. They have a parking garage with controlled access. We were able to park on the first level, which was covered from the weather. The public lot a couple of blocks to the south is ALLPARK, IIRC. There are a couple of "park-n-fly" places near the airport which have shuttles to the cruise pier as well. In general, parking should not be problem in San Diego.

In 2003 we parked at the open All-Park (name?) place across the street.

We had no problems and the lot seemed secure. I wasn't afraid to leave my Jag there all week. It's nice to roll off the ship, walk over to the lot and be on the highway home in 10 minutes.

We're going again this year 11/19 -Thanksgiving week- on the Oosterdam and will probably park there again.

I also thought it would be fun to take the train down from Orange County.

The San Diego train station is only 2-3 blocks from the pier.

Hey!

We're on the same cruise!!! :D

I have a lonely roll call going...but so far no one has jumped on board...so yippee!!!

Maybe we can carpool (hee hee) ;)

Anyway...so excited to find someone else on the trip!

Hi Tiffnco.

Yes, Jane and I booked today along with my sister and her husband from Seattle and my brother and his wife and son from Northern California.

My wife's friend has a big group going as well.

I was amazed to find the ship rapidly selling out. I checked last week and there were tons of cabins left and this morning there were only two SS left (and neither was in a desireable location). We got 8068, my sister is 8099 and my brother had to settle for a VB, 6019.

We're all hoping others will open up so we may be able to get reassigned.

Now that you told me about it, I'll check the Roll-Call board for certain.

Thanks, Bill

Hi Bill...

I know what you mean on those cabins!

We're in an aft VA and I was looking to upgrade and all of a sudden...WHAM! No SS cabins left. So, I suppose I'll sit back and enjoy the balcony on our cabin (5180)

As for our "group" it's just me and my husband. We've decided to leave the family behind this year and enjoy a nice peaceful Thanksgiving

Anyway, I suppose we can carry this conversation on over at the roll call...so I look forward to seeing you over there!

Bill and Jane (and other potential Amtrak riders): Amtrak to San Diego terminates at the Santa Fe Depot, which is between Ketner and Pacific Highway, between Broadway and "B" street. It is a two-to-three block walk (depending on where you sit on the train) to the Cruise Ship Terminal. Easily do-able if you have a suitcase on wheels. Saves parking charges. If you do take the train, sit on the right side, facing the direction of travel. You'll get a good view of the ocean as you go through Dana Point, San Clemente, Camp Pendleton and Del Mar.

BTW, parking at the big lot near the Cruise ship terminal is now up to $12.50 per day, I think. If you do park there, there is an exit at the corner closest to the Cruise Ship Terminal.

Bon voyage!

Sit as far forward on the train as you can. Exit the train and walk in the direction the train has been going. Leave the the unloading area and turn right on Broadway. It's 1.75 blocks to the water. At the water turn right and a block down on the left is the cruise pier (But if there are multiple cruise ships in that day, it will be an even shorter walk as the alternate piers are even closer to Broadway.)

Bob's directions are right on.

Good news! Oosterdam will be the only cruise ship in port on 11/19/2005. Here's a link to the Port District's list of cruises ships in port. http://www.portofsandiego.org/sandiego_maritime/cruise/schedulesearch.asp

But of course, by no means will the O-dam be the only ship in port. Typically two aricraft carriers right across the bay at North Island. In addition, the former USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum is moored on the waterfront just south of the Cruise Ship Terminal. It has become the most popular attraction in San Diego, ahead of even the San Diego Zoo. Time permitting, it is worth a visit.
