Just curious! Does anyone know which ship Captain Tim Roberts is Master of? We were on the Ms Statendam this past Oct/Nov and Captain Roberts was in command. We very much enjoyed his colorful and informative daily commentary.

I believe he reported on our cruise he was leaving to go to the Veendam. Yes, his commentaries were candid and casual. Apparently his background was on those smaller "Windstar" (?) cruises when they were part of the parent company. His tale as a in-country farm boy who had never even seen the sea to a ship's captain was a great delight. He was traveling with his parents on our cruise and we seemed to bump into them on all of our shore excursions, which they were doing privately.

Iknow I am responding to old posts, but I just heard from Holland America that Tim Roberts will be our captain on Prinsendam for the 2012 Grand South America and Antarctica Voyage.

Copper John, you had me baffled until Pat pointed out how old the thread was. He was on the Prinsendam in July and August. A very nice gentleman.

Sorry to baffle you Roy!;)
Agreed! Capt. Tim Roberts is one of the nicest gentlemen you'll ever meet! His crew loved him on Statendam and I'm sure they do on Prinsendam also

He's Baaaaaack. We had him too - yes his commentaries were unique. He was traveling with his parents on our trip last year. I recall him mentioning in his comment towards the he was leaving the Statendam and muttered under his breath for all to hear, "thank goodness" which was a bit of a surprise but I guess nothing unusual. Maybe corporate punished him for that comment and put him right back on it?

It is good to hear nice things about another HAL captain. HAL does have some quality people on the ships on the high seas.

Capt. Roberts is on leave right now and getting ready for the World Cruise January 2011. He was our Captain on the Nieuw Amsterdam. We disembarked 11-13-11. He is excited about the World Cruise. I hope that he writes a blog.

I think you are getting him confused with Captain Jonathan Mercer, who just left the Nieuw Amsterdam and will be the Captain on the 2012 world cruise.

I agree that Captain Roberts is wonderful. He was cordial and pleasant whenever we met and his "Voice from the Bridge" announcements were droll. It was very enlightening how he and the crew maneuvered the ship for an air rescue off the coast of Scotland and he was extremely reassuring when the Pdam lost power in the North Sea last year, keeping us updated often.
Roy, were you at the showroom when that happened? I hear it was a riot (in the good sense).

Carole, I was in my cabin when that happened. At that time, I was kind of glad I had taken the upsell from my cave. I don't remember an air rescue off Scotland. I remember 2 rescues, one from the Rotterdam off Cape Cod, and the other off northern Iceland. I thought the one off Iceland was by boat, although I may have been mistaken. Was there a third?
One of the things I remember fondly about Capt. Roberts was his comments about the Marco Polo. He (perhaps unwittingly) commented about it's age and loyal following when we were leaving Torshavn, and used it again when asked about the Prinsendam's future from a Q&A in the showroom. He stressed the ship's age (well over 40) and it's commonalities with the Elegant Explorer, (1) a loyal following, and (2) being extremely built. He really left me optimistic about the ship's potential future.

Carole,
We were in the showroom that night and it was really funny. The comedian ad libed his entire show, using the captain as a straight man every time he came on the PA.
I agree, Captain Roberts is one of the best HAL has.

I'm sorry I got my captains confused. You are right I just sailed with Mersser.
I guess to many cruises so close together.

I have always wondered why some posters seem to think certain Captains are very competent. Does this imply that some are less so? Is it based on their personality?
I believe that all Masters on Hal are extremely competent, as are their 2IC's, otherwise they would not be on the job.
Perhaps it is an incorrect assumption. I really have absolutely no way of determining if a Captain is good-other than if I depart and arrive safely. Am I missing something?

Well, there was a certain incompetent Captain who was with Celebrity a few years back - he was removed from the ship by Coast Guard for being drunk, and was subsequently fired...

Everyone wants a competent Captain.
Some pax are happy when the Captain is humerous, takes part in the cruise, is willing to talk to the pax once in a while, willing to host a Captain's table, says more than 6 words on the Voice from the Bridge, participates in the ship's events (eg: judging a cook-off), hosts a table at the mariner's Brunch and just generally seems to like the role and does not give the impression that he really would prefer no pax at all on his ship.
Most Captains do some of the above; others don't; a few prize ones do virtually everything. For some pax this makes a difference, especially on the longer cruises.
(If Captain Mercer is to be on the World Cruise, HAL has made a very, very good choice!)

Roy,
The air rescue happened after you disembarked in Scotland. We were on our way to Amsterdam when a fellow was taken off by helo in a stretcher from the top deck. But before that, his wife was lifted to the copter by hanging onto the rescuer. It must have been a terrifying experience hanging in the air with her arms and legs wrapped around this guy. We were wondering if perhaps Prince Andrew was the pilot.;)
Afterwards, Captain Roberts came on the air and expressed his great admiration for the job the air-sea rescue teams due and had very kind words for the U S Coast Guard in particular.
