Time For A Dam Change: From Almost It Girl to A Hal Gal?…Eurodam 2/19/11 :D

Introduction:
Hair turning grey, metabolism slowing, prescription progressive glasses purchased, the sand of time in my hourglass figure has securely settled on my bottom. My doctors declared it was time for a change. So I popped a multi-vitamin, accepted my new dress size, bought a one piece miracle suit, tossed my hot-pant shorts, and changed cruise lines. My days at sea numbers 264 through 271 would be spent with Holland America Line as a newbie to the company. Since I was walking around proclaiming dam all the time, I figured HAL and I already had something in common. HAL cruisers sure do like to swear a lot. The Eurodam had the best going rate as a solo cruiser during this 2/19/11 President’s week so I booked last minute the least costly inside guarantee rate. Hey, I practice what I preach: Go low the first time doing something so if you dislike it, well, you did not pay that much for it!

Embarkation:
Seeing the ship from the Hampton Inn and Suites (FLL Airport south)’s free shuttle, the Eurodam looked sleek, slender, and nostalgic. She also appeared sedate as I wondered what mysteries were inside because the exterior appearance certainly did not give any clues. Regardless, she was just going to be my transportation to the sun, sand, and surf. If I had any hopes while onboard, it was to learn as much as possible from the esteemed elderly. Lo and behold thirty minutes later I was onboard, heading to my prepared stateroom 6156, which also had my luggage delivered inside it by the time I finished the Mariner luncheon. Due to my Carnival sailings many moons ago, I was given a one star status. The immediate acceptance into the HAL society was sort of nice!

First Impressions of the Eurodam:
I loved her! Everything was so new to me. I smiled when I got lost, could not find my way, and had to rely often on the big picture ship layout by each stairwell/elevator. Her décor is classic ship. She brought me back to a different era of cruising with the wooden loungers on the promenade and on the forward top decks. Each bar and lounge area has ocean views as does the outside decks. Very little blocks the sea whether you are inside or outside.

Although only 2100 passengers or so, there seemed to be many bars and lounges that were cozy, intimate, and inviting. Fresh flowers were arranged everywhere. I picked, prodded, and felt the dirt in each one. The single flowers in the glass bowls were another special touch adding to the serene and peaceful ambiance on board. As a Leo, I secretly purred with delight inside when spotting lion statues within the décor along the hallways. I squealed out loud to discover my favorite Elemis body lotion in all public bathrooms (as well as in my stateroom). I oooh’d and aaaah’d upon seeing the lido cabanas and the retreat cabanas. They are a fantastic concept that should be stolen by other cruise lines. I shouted, “Dam! They think of everything!” when I realized each public bathroom stall (handicapped or not) has its very own emergency button. OH! I even found the last remaining Romanians that work cruise ships! They are held hostage in the jewelry store. Of course they thought I meant watches when I said I was only looking. A very wise move for HAL to put them in the jewelry store. I’ll bet their sales are number one in the entire industry.

My Stateroom 6156:
A cruise critic compared HAL suite life and NCL suite life so I am going to compare the inside cabin life of both lines. Although I have sailed in most categories other than NCL Garden/courtyard villas, it is only fair to compare the inside since I stayed the entire week in the lowest inside guarantee. My cabin 6156 was smaller than the picture shown on the HAL website but I already knew that from cruise critic comments. Instead of the big couch in the picture, I had the one chair and table which was fine. I ended up putting the chair in the vanity area and the vanity cushioned backless seat on top of the table so I had an open shelf. Although the cabin had plenty of closet space, I wanted more shelf space so I created my own.

My stateroom steward Toni and his assistant were awesome. They were very good, always asked if everything was okay, did I need anything, and even found moments to converse, or to laugh with me. I treat my stewards as an equal and appreciate the service they provide. Likewise, I ask if they need anything in port, find out when their time off on land is, and then give a surprise early thank you gift the morning of so they can really have fun while in port without a worry about what something will cost them. Any time I walked through the halls, the stewards greeted me, and this is the same on NCL.

Below are the actual cabin differences:

1. HAL does not have stateroom coffee machines but NCL ships in the past had them.

2. HAL has the dreaded shower curtain where NCL ships have the sliding door.

3. HAL has awesome stateroom bathrobes! NCL is hit or miss whether you get one in an inside stateroom. NCL bathrobes are thinner and waffle-like.

4. NCL has more drawers and open shelve space where HAL has more closet space (three closets).

5. HAL has separate containers for hair shampoo and hair conditioner. NCL only has the shampoo/conditioner combination which I do not like. The shower body wash is the same.

6. On HAL, I got the Elemis body lotion. On NCL inside, it is a hit or miss whether you get the Elemis or an NCL product body lotion.

7. NCL has awesome puffy duvet comforters and yummy smelling fresh pressed sheets. HAL only had a thin blanket inside a thin sheeted duvet. I was glad to find an extra blanket in the secret drawers at the foot of the beds to keep me warm.

8. I usually can get a mattress topper on NCL if necessary. I could not get one on HAL because everyone asked for them all the time. HAL bought new beds instead…I tried to find the name of the company but the mattress only had Holland America stamped on them. NCL bedding comes from Italy. I have an abundance of pillows on both lines especially when sailing solo!

9. The vanity mirror light on HAL was weak although I appreciated the magnified adjustable mirror on the stand. I found a two inch hair growing out of the side of my neck and one in the middle of my forehead.

10. The ventilation in cabins are hit or miss. Some are louder than others and 6156 had the vent right over my bed which I found annoying until I remembered my ear plugs and the extra pillows also located in the secret drawers beneath the bed.

The Pinnacle Grill Restaurant: I enjoyed my first dinner onboard! The Pinnacle Grill Manager was very kind and did NOT sit me in a corner in the back as I read happening to another solo in a previous cruise critic review. In my opinion, I had the best seat which was a curved booth in the middle near a window where I could watch the sea, other passengers, the wait staff, the manager, and talk to the wine steward located next to the booth. The booth had higher seating than the tables and chairs and I was sooooooo very comfortable! Again, the décor was wonderful and I secretly hoped I would get the same booth as I also scheduled Le Cirque dinner later in the week. I canceled it however when I discovered Alaskan king crab legs were served in the Rembrandt dining room the same night and was credited the 39 dollar fee on my onboard account. I love beef but I love crab legs more!

I think after 31 NCL cruises I can call myself an expert on cruise ship specialty restaurants. The Pinnacle Grill did not disappoint and I enjoyed very much the chef’s mushroom cappuccino, French onion soup, creamed spinach, filet mignon, and shrimp (the land and sea entrée). Sometimes cruise critics think the specialty restaurant serving better food is all just a scam to make more money. In my opinion, the extra fee paid actually covers the cost of the bigger portions, better cuts of beef, and extra ingredients. The more intimate ambiance is also worth the extra charge. Even so, had I known how HAL does their open seating dining, I just might have skipped the solo PG experience. Even more so, I am glad I did not for I was invited by some of the passengers dining there that evening to join them at the adult pool the next day. I just love teachers-on-vacation! They still find a way to make sure nobody feels alone.

Early Bed Time on the Eurodam: I read on the boards HAL shuts down at 11pm. Throughout the week I found it not really to be true. After attending the welcoming aboard show and after getting a surprise “would you like to dance with me” to a Charlie and the HAL Cats song in the Queen’s Lounge by somebody wearing a name tag (how embarrassed was I when I asked if he was a dance host?!), I retired at 10pm because that is what I thought I was supposed to do. I returned to my stateroom and found a HAL tote bag present on my bed which I found very useful all week long at the pool and on land. I shrieked with joy when I also found TWO chocolate mints in my pillow! I am the one of the few NCL lovers who actually misses the little chocolates at bedtime!

Being middle aged means looking more forward to early mornings than late nights. I wanted to fall asleep fast so early morning would arrive. I had more to explore and new things to learn. With all the new experiences onboard embarkation day I was indeed pooped. I did have enough energy to laugh out loud when the bed shook side to side due to the aft location. Fortunately, once the ship picked up speed the gentle rocking set in so rest came until I also learned being middle aged means getting up six times throughout the night to empty your bladder. By the seventh wake up morning indeed arrived and a new day onboard the Eurodam at sea would begin.

I have more to share with you so I will return to this thread as soon as I can with more categorized topics that include the other restaurants, open seating dining, the meet and greet, the passengers, dress codes, what I did in the ports, the entertainment, the surprise differences, secret tips, and to answer any questions along the way...

What a wonderful sense of humor. I laughed out loud in some parts which earned me very strange looks from DH. I will mark this thread so when I return from my month on the Rotterdam I can read the rest of the story.
Thanks for posting this great read.

I think some of the CC members should begin writing a cruise novel. Along with our water-resistant camera recently ordered for our trip next week, we ordered the "behind the scenes" "novel" about cruise ships. You're off to a great start in the HAL boards, OP!!

More Ooooh‘s and Ahhhh‘s!

While exploring the Eurodam throughout the week I discovered more cool things! I love the wooden decks all throughout the ship. I love the black and white pictures along the stateroom hallways. I FINALLY became one of the passengers who enjoyed a promenade deck chair for hours on end for days on end. How many years have I power-walked on cruise ships past them while secretly wanting to join their world? Not sure if my middle aged status deserved a spot in one, I was sure to give it up if an elder onboard wanted one or needed one.

Fortunately, there were always chairs available because I was out there during afternoon tea time and during early dinner time to watch the sun sets. Overall, there were always loungers in the sun and on the promenade available…always an open deck space available…even while walking around inside. I finally understood what others on the cruise critic boards meant by places to connect with the sea. I also concluded HAL cruisers are very respectful and do not partake in chair hogging activities.

The biggest surprise for me was a place called The Crow’s Nest. I envisioned just an indoor bar and dance floor in the top forward area as found on NCL, Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Princess cruise ships. Although I never spent time there (as I wanted sun sun and more sun), I found the entire concept intriguing. The crow’s nest is a multi-purpose area. All along the front and side windows are large leather Captain chairs facing the sea with long leather couches faces inward. Throughout the nest are pods of couches and chairs for groups/families to gather with tables centered in the middle. On one side is the internet café, along with walls of library books. The Eurodam even has a librarian…and she looks like a true librarian…not the onboard DJ!

There is another area of the crow's nest where magazines and newspapers are found along with a big table to set a writing journal upon. A bar is on one side and a Java Café (for a fee) is on the other side. A game board area is also in another location with many games available. Some smaller tables were chess/checkers tables. A spot in the back starboard side was called the Captain’s Corner where a private party could be held.

Our Cruise Critic Meet and Greet
Cruise critic Signora coordinated the meet and greet for our roll call and the Eurodam provided for coffee/juice/muffins on a table set up in the Captain’s Corner. It was wonderful to meet the faces of people I talked to during the brief weeks before sailing. Since cruise critic Flagger got upgraded to a verandah I tried to buy his retreat cabana to no avail. I finally met Nyteacher as we were supposed to meet up on the Gem last year but did not. As a solo, I was very happy and felt a sense of security to feel like I somewhat knew people onboard. About 18 of us gathered and talked for about 60 to 90 minutes. I was thankful to Signora and to NY Teacher for telling me their cabin number in case I got scared being a solo. See again what I love about teachers? Even while on vacation, they want to make sure others are okay. NY teacher, thank you for inviting me to your lido cabana. I enjoyed the conversations and the coffee with you, hubby, and son! Signora, thank you for setting everything up.

No officers attended the meet and greet and I have my theories about that. The secret agent sent down to look from afar and then call someone about our low turnout perhaps might be one reason but I have surmised too much already. I shall write nor speak no more about it. If I was 95 then I surely would tell you exactly what is on my mind. In my book a person 95 or older is allowed to say anything and get away with it. Now, if you want to count Cruise Director Jason arriving as a ship officer, then we DID have one last minute arrival. He said hello and answered a few questions while welcoming us aboard. So Jason gets his own heading!

Jason The Cool Cruise Director:
Okay, is this guy a one man show with a one man staff or what? He was everywhere and seemed to be at every activity, show, and was seen talking with others all week long. His announcements were minimal (hooray!) and he did not need any shtick or unique talent to be effective. He was up early and he was up late while never looking tired, rushed, or overworked. An only child who was home schooled, I could see how he ended up being where he is totally enjoying the spotlight and ensuring tons of people around him were enjoying their vacations week after week. Kudos to Jason. He had a tougher job President’s week because there was a wide range of ages onboard this week which is not the norm. Overall, I was impressed with the variety of programming and the tastefulness of all activities/shows for all ages.

Workshops and Culture At Sea:
I met the guy who gives technology classes all throughout the week. The workshops are free and although I never attended any (I wanted sun, sun, and more sun), I definitely would in the future. Could I write off my cruise vacation as a workshop/conference perhaps if I asked for a certificate of attendance? I never saw the kitchen/culinary area where food presentations and cooking demonstrations are done but this seemed to be a hit with the passengers who did attend. Hands-on culinary arts classes are offered daily and many include how to select the wine to go along with your perfect party.

Everything Else Similar to Other Cruise Lines:
Spa specials, BINGO, Art Auctions, wine tastings, Friends of Bill W., fitness classes, a Kids Club, Karaoke, drinks of the day, Signature shop and jewelry specials, dance classes, ports-of-call talks, future cruise talks, bon voyage sail away parties, 2 for 1 specials in certain locations at certain times. One elderly group planned their entire day around the 2 for 1 specials…from 5-6 in one bar…from 6-7 in another…from 7-8 in another. It must have been a hit onboard for I never saw them at the daily 11pm to midnight 2 for 1 special in Northern Lights disco…

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ** * * * * * * * * * *
I go to bed early now so I am signing off until tomorrow night. I still have more tell. The passengers onboard this week were WONDERFUL to talk to. I attribute my good time to the excellent work of the guys greeting and seating me for breakfast, lunch, and dinner in the Rembrandt Dining Room which provided me with exactly what I hoped for…

Coka: great review--personally I didn't expect more people at the meet and greet since it was basically our core group on the roll call. I have to to reveal that maybe instead of officers coming to our M and G I got mysteriously invited to a Captain's Party in the Crow's Nest (yes, a wonderful space) as the contact HAL had for our group. Basically just free drinks and a chance to rub shoulders (and take a pic) with the Captain and feel like one of the beautiful people. It was great to meet you and fun to run into fellow roll-callers during the cruise. As first-time Halers we were very, very happy. Already booked on the NA for next year!

Oh, Coka!

I have been anticipating your review, and you do not disappoint! After my last few cruises on NCL - and loving them - I have been wondering what differences I would find when I return to an old love - HAL! Thanks for taking the time to compare. I knew that you would like the many special touches on HAL. Next time you should try an outside , at least, to appreciate the lovely bathrooms!

I was on the Eurodam the week before you, also sailing solo. I wrote a review, but can I say that it really pales in comparison to yours?

I had the same cabin steward team as you did. Wasn't Toni the greatest? He and Herman were so pleasant and attentive.

Also totally agree about Jason. If the cruise industry wanted to draw up a prototype for a cruise director, they would need look no further than him.

I hope I have an opportunity to be on a sailing with you sometime -- you sound like you'd be a hoot! Can't wait for your next installments.

for your witty and informative review. I thoroughly enjoyed your posts and reviews over on the NCL board and followed along with your adventures in the "It-Girl" contest. A few years ago I strayed from NCL ... my cruise line of choice due to their "free style" offering, and booked a HAL cruise for a specific itinerary. I found they offered much of the freedom I enjoyed on NCL and have not looked back. I am so glad to hear that you have enjoyed your HAL experience and it's obvious you have made friends who are thoroughly enjoying your posts here on the HAL board. Welcome and looking forward to reading more.

I had the same cabin steward team as you did. Wasn't Toni the greatest? He and Herman were so pleasant and attentive..

Toni reminded me of a guy I went to high school with. Yes, he was very sweet! Herman is all done...for good...this was his last contract and he was heading home.

I was quite surprised how similar the two lines are in many areas. I have concluded the dons, er the CEO's gather each year and divide up who gets to excel in what areas...I can see it now..."HAL, you get the special touches, NCL, you get the entertainment, RCCL, you get the atriums and size, ...etc!!!"

I have been trying to get her to cruise HAL for years now!!!! Cheers, Denise

I have been looking at HAL since last summer. I am very impressed and pleasantly surprised.

Open Seating in the Rembrandt Dining Room:

So I had no idea how this worked on HAL. At the last night’s dinner I learned that open seating passengers received cards delivered to the cabin with a time to eat assigned to them. The only one I ever received was the last night where a special event took place in the dining room. Some passengers received one every night while others reported receiving cards on some nights. I think I had been doing it incorrectly all week long. Anytime I was ready to eat, which usually was about 45 minutes before breakfast, lunch, or dinner ended, I just showed up to the restaurant. Regardless, I still had fun taking part in it and the guys at the door never let on if I was doing it wrong.

The guys at the entrance were fantastic! They always remembered my name and always had a kind word to say to me. They knew it did not matter to me whether I sat alone or with others but somehow managed to seat me with others. I teased them that they could not remember my cabin number too but even I could not remember all week long. I probably do not have it correct in this review. I DO know it was the second inside door at the starboard end hallway where the black/white picture of a guy sitting on the railing of a cruise ship hung.

I enjoyed all of my meals in the dining room. Food is very subjective so I hesitate to review a lot. I tried Dutch eggs benedict for the first time and discovered the Dutch part meant putting the ham and eggs on a piece of white bread. The Rembrandt’s escargot was on par with that of NCL’s Le Bistro escargot although overall no cruise line has topped NCL’s breads. HAL does the hot soups better than NCL yet NCL does the colds soups better. HAL has more selections on their menu than NCL does. I wished I ordered the lamb shank because when a passenger let me try theirs, it made the eyes roll back in my head. A waiter’s eyes rolled back in his head when I ordered a third serving of king crab legs as my dessert. I lied that I did not seriously want more.

I chuckled that after the crab and lobster dinners, there was nobody to give me a wet wash cloth. HAL has towels towels everywhere…when boarding the ship a wet cloth from a silver platter is offered… when drying hands in the public bathrooms a dry cloth is readily available…all around the pool areas cooling cloths and dry towels…but not one was spotted when melted butter ran down my chin and in between all my fingers down my wrists…

The most interesting component of open seating dining for me was meeting all the passengers who also loved sharing tables and dining with different people each time. Everyone onboard was having a wonderful week and I found each meal enhanced due to the conversations, no matter the direction they took. I shared wine with a solo world traveler whose parents escaped a war torn country. I shared jokes with an elderly gentleman and learned some day I too will not only forget the punch line, but will forget the main story as well. I learned from post menopausal women with board flat tummies to cut wheat out of my diet entirely, reduce HDL intake, and to increase pro-biotics as well. I listened intensively to their advice as I chewed and swallowed the bread pudding.

Fascinating love stories were shared by the couple never apart for 63 years and the by the couple who appeared 63 years apart. Even the guy, who never in a million years had an interest in cruising, deciding to take the week all in with a positive attitude, whispered a confession he enjoyed getting dressed up in a tuxedo for formal nights and oh, if the guys back home could see him now...Finally, the lottery winners who take their entire family on a cruise every year to share their good fortune.

Formal Nights and Dress Codes:

I could have stayed onboard another two weeks without ever needing the 49 dollar all inclusive laundry package. I certainly did not want to upset the other passengers during the evening by not adhering to the evening dress code of two formal nights and five resort casual nights. As a newbie to HAL, I certainly did not want to upset anybody during the day either so I was conscious of it the entire time with one exception. The traditional early seating diners had to see me in my sweaty workout clothes walking by the upstairs Rembrandt dining room windows that remained opened to view the sea. They had to see me walk by about 15 times or until I reached 60 minutes.

One woman always looked when I went by as three times around the promenade equals one mile. I wondered if she was enjoying her assigned table mates. During the slow cool down walk at the end…the one where the adrenaline rush kicks in, which was also during their dessert time, I lip moved a “help me” signal and motion to the woman inside. She did not come out to save me but she did crack a smile for me. Afterwards, I dressed up and went out to people watch prior to my dinner. No violations and everyone looked very nice. I thought I would have seen more gowns and tuxedos than I did…but it still was more than I have seen on NCL in years.

I loved how they fixed up the dining room on formal nights! The pure white linen/cotton chair covers brought an overwhelming element of formality to the entire experience. I did wonder if the covers ever made anyone fearful to sit in them as they did me. I think they do it so everyone eats slowly, appropriately, and carefully on those nights. Chocolate brownie layered cake for dessert? No thank you, I will wait for the late night Dutch Chocolate Extravaganza later in the week.

The Dutch Chocolate Extravaganza!

Arriving an hour after it began, I did not see any Dutch and I did not see much chocolate. I DID see a lot of desserts, some ice sculptures, candy apples, cotton candy, and sprinkled assortments. I told the retired math teacher in front of me that at any buffet the good stuff is always at the end. In my opinion, I was correct…for the liquid chocolate fountain with the fruit on sticks dipped in it was there! My plate remained empty all throughout because I was just looking until I reached that chocolate fountain.

For me, I will not rave about the desserts or the chocolate. I will rave about the ambiance and the set up of the extravaganza. Held in the enclosed lido deck area at 10pm, the lighting and the surroundings made it more special than having it in a dining room or buffet area. People milled about, waiters served coffee and water and cocktails to those of us who sat at tables. Everyone was dressed up. By this time of week many passengers know each other so it was easy to mill about and say hello as if all had not seen each other in years. I suppose when gets older, it just feels that way. Actually, it has more to do with the smaller ships and why I enjoy them so. If I was to make one suggestion to the entire event: Have the four string players playing their violins and other string instruments during the extravaganza. To me, that would have been the icing on the cake.

The Entertainers Onboard: Because Some of You Probably Want to Know:

Bradley on the Guitar (never saw his venues)

The Neptunes (The ship band )

Piano Man Michael (who often played to a full lounge…sing alongs, Neil Diamond, late night memories, Motown, 50‘s/60‘s hits, Stars of Vegas, Billy Joel)

Adagio Strings (a classical quartet)

Charlie and the HAL Cats (A dance band, variety music, played by poolside as well)

DJ Issa (he played some techno for me when nobody was around…he scored big points by playing my favorite first without even me asking!)

Peter Peterkin (America’s Got Talent Finalist)

Karaoke and Karaoke Superstar Contest (the passengers entertained the crowd extremely well…standing room only…one of the best karaoke performances ever seen on a cruise ship)

Dave Hemstad (Comedien…funny…finished contract mid week…had an awesome set of legs, great pants, and ad-libbed very well when, um, unexpected things happened…)

Captain Jeroen van Donselaar, the comedian: (I got the biggest laugh when he came over the intercom to promote the Behind The Scenes Tour taking place the following day at sea for only 150 dollars…Oh my dear…the poor guy…WHO is making him do that?!)

James Cielen (Magician…Awesome…OMG…who let the dogs out…Arf! Arf! Very clever performance and I left scratching my head how he pulled some of the tricks off…especially the dogs).

The Eurodam Singers and Dancers: (For me, a big round of applause if not a standing ovation goes to the Eurodam singers and dancers. First, it is not easy to pull off what they did with very little stage sets whereas NCL and other lines have bigger production shows. This group had to only rely on their raw individual talent to keep the show flowing. They were at their musical best when singing broadway and opera as opposed to the pop songs. I LOVED their dancing. Nobody left their shows and I overheard lots of people commenting how they enjoyed them as they exited the theater. I often found myself smiling during the performances as the audience of all ages tapped their feet, clapped their hands, and smiled too. Lately, I have been listening to the oldies music on my Sirius satellite radio in my new vehicle. I can not wait until I hear “Yabba dabba dabba dabba dabba dabba yabba said the Monkey to the Chimp…!”)

Up next: the ports of call…but do not expect much…I went for the sun, sand, and surf…

Sun, Sun, the Beautiful Sun…Burn! It Only Hurts For A Day!

Stop #1...Grand Turk:

Having no idea what was in Grand Turk, I hoped I could hop in a cab to the nearest beach. My first view of the port was from my now personal verandah, otherwise known as the promenade deck. Angels sang that early morning upon my first glance at the port. The beach was right there! Fifty steps from the gangplank and my toes were squishing in the sand and my calves splashed in the surf as the sun glazed my skin. No matter that my swim dress covered ½ of my body and I would have funky tan lines. If one wanted to be negative, this port could be labeled one big tourist trap with Diamonds International, Columbian Emeralds, Margaritaville with a giant swimming pool, and other stores to take your money only 51 feet from the gangway.

Once again, plenty of loungers were available. I walked to the furthest end of one side where the locals cooked up barbecued chicken or creatures that tasted like chicken. Upon return, I walked to the other furthest end to see what was around the bend. Very few traversed here but those who did left behind a few shells gathered from the tides. I found a board plank resting on top of two big rocks where the waves met the beach. Further around the bend on the windy side I discovered the most amazing sight. A conch Valhalla! A resting place for thousands and thousands of dead conch.

I spent at least one hour there to find three almost perfect conch shells. One pink, one grayish, and one white. They were huge! I rinsed them, I cleaned them, I dried them, and then I exercised my arms with them. Alone, I was in my glory until apprehension took over for venturing too far off. I suppose it was the brand new single sneaker I also found. Where was the rest of him? So I returned to the wooden bench plank where I could see the Eurodam and other passengers from afar.

Thinking about how good I was feeling to just sit there forever gazing out to the sea, I conversed with the few who also ventured around the bend. I asked all who passed if they would like to purchase a conch. Since the day was slow, they were 50% off the regular $1.20 price. I had no takers as they all thought they could do better themselves. Hours passed and the sun was now in a different area of the sky. Finally, a little tyke and his mom were very interested in my shells. Getting tired and out of drinking water, I told little tyke he could have them only if he would tell people back home how he got them. “You gave them to me!” he shouted excitedly. “No,” I corrected. “If you can say you got them from Sally sitting by the sea shore selling sea shells for sixty cents while she sunned skin on all sides, THEN you can have them.” It was little tyke’s lucky day as he had all teeth still in his mouth and he could repeat it. He went home with the best conch shell from the lot. It was all he could carry. I gave another away and left the third on display for others to wonder how it got there.

Closing shop, I found a lounger in the shade close to the ship beneath a palm tree and rested until All Aboard at 2:30pm. I finished the afternoon sunning my skin again aft poolside listening to the music of Charlie and the Hal Cats. Most loungers, tables, and chairs were occupied but the pool was not which surprised me until I found out why. According to anyone who lived south of the 44th parallel, the pool water was freezing! I found it very refreshing and began an hour swim exercise regime while secretly dancing water aerobics to the band music. Nobody could really see because of the pool benches all around.

I had a blast with myself and was very happy until a combination of hypothermia or too much sun set in. So I had a pina colada to cool my body temperature further. Throughout, I never noticed or spotted the fool by the pool. You know the one…Nanuck from the North who is a steamed lobster at the end of the first sun filled day of vacation? It was not until I returned to the cabin around 6pm that the fool in the crowd was ME! I was indeed fried.

Stop #2...San Juan:

Onboard Travel Guide Danielle Moore’s pleasant voice over the intercom explained the historical sights and topography of San Juan as we pulled into port. Deck five bow was opened up and passengers were allowed into the area for a front view. I am sure others were all over the other open deck areas or on their private verandahs, but I went to the bow. I was trying to spot a pharmacy nearby to buy sun block. My plan to walk up to El Morro was foiled just like it was the previous times I was in Puerto Rico. I again preferred to just look from afar! Some day I will make it there.
Instead, I walked around the streets of Old San Juan.

I stress the importance of wearing very comfortable shoes while exploring. If you have a computer with you and need to connect to home, then a Starbucks is nearby. I forgot the name of the hotel on the corner to the left of the pier…but walk up that street and it is on the left. The crew with computers go there. If you do not have a computer and want an internet café, then walk further up the same street until you see Café Cultura restaurant. On the side of the Café Cultura is an entrance to The Sea Farer’s House where on the second floor is a very comfortable air conditioned internet café. The price is 9 cents per minute. The connection is very good. I used their computer for about 100 minutes for 9 dollars which is definitely better priced than the ship.

Stop #3...St. Thomas:

Having sailed to the Caribbean many times I have always missed the Virgin Gorda Baths for various reasons. The one tour I was going to sign up for was the only one (of many offered) that was canceled this sailing week as printed in the onboard form. What did I do? I laughed about it and thought of the money saved. Since nine or so ships were at the island that day, I did not want to visit any of the beaches to find an open spot of sand. Instead, I enjoyed the entire aft pool area with about five other passengers who had the same thoughts. With plenty of sun block, I caught up on sleep in the sunshine due to the motionless Eurodam.

A few hours before departing the dock, I got off and walked around the port. I found giant iguanas doing the same thing on all the rocks. They are hard to spot but it was fun when they woke up. Iguanas love to have their pictures taken as they will pose for you. I saw it with my own eyes!

The Allure of the Seas was docked next to us so be sure to get to where you want prior to 11am because I watched the giant lines of passengers getting off at that time heading to the cab/tour areas. I did not have ship envy. I was so happy to be on the Eurodam!

Stop 4...Half Moon Cay:

Be advised it can take 30 to 45 minutes to fill up one tender and make it to the final destination whether it be coming or going. The smart ones wore a hat and sun block when waiting on the top deck.

Oh, I LOVED this stop just as much as Grand Turk! I walked to the very far end until the sign stated I better not walk any further. I stopped to see the horse stables on the way back and used a very clean bathroom nearby. This is one of the tour options available that looked like fun. Not the bathroom but the horses. About half way back I found a lounger in the shade under a palm tree and rested. I rested until I wondered if a coconut would hit me in the head if the gentle wind blew it off. Nobody would know if I was unconscious and I did not want to miss the last tender back.

So I headed back to where the passengers were. I tried to peek into the private cabanas…they looked awesome from what I could see from afar. Cushioned loungers, ice buckets, an air conditioner, a fan, a table, a patio, and private bar servers. Another great idea that should be stolen by other cruise lines. Both the Eurodam and the Noordam ships were on the island that day and a Noordam versus Eurodam volleyball match was scheduled. A barbecue was also available but I tend to only eat onboard and therefore did not check out the area. I also did not check out any of the shops. I basically had a great time venturing off by myself and walking the shoreline. I did stop in the island chapel but no prayer was necessary there. Believe me, I said my prayers of thanks each time I stared at the sea which basically was during the entire cruise when not talking to people.

I did however say two special prayers while alone on the top deck of the pirate ship. One of thanks and one for courage. The giant ship bar on the beach was fun while I was there for a few minutes. I had just missed the Noordam’s band but what I could gather from their last song, they were very good! The Hal Cats had played earlier. Upstairs in the ship bar was a lookout area.

From that view I spotted one of the most romantic scenes: An elderly couple walking hand in hand along the long shoreline. Both wore his and her Panama hats and were fully clothed. Neither had shoes. She had a flowing dress and he had a Guayabera shirt and flowing white linen pants. He had no care the bottoms were getting wet as the waves flowed into them. Both noticed not the people in their surroundings but only each other as they strolled and conversed. My prayer was that of thanks for real life miracles, for that romantic scene is definitely going to be me and Mr. coka now that he wants to cruise again…and will soon be able to walk a shoreline. Forget about dancing with him...I can't wait to just walk with him like that! To not be focused on my self only, the prayers also included continued courage for the cruising survivors of loved ones lost...

I will return this weekend for a few final topics such as the Tamarind, onboard secrets, and other observations not yet mentioned.

Hi, Coka. I have a question for you.

Did you happen to attend the "solo and singles" lunch on the first sea day and, if you did, was there any staff hosting the table(s)? Also, even though I know that you're not a single solo, did you happen to notice if there were any singles gatherings in the evenings?

Just curious, because on my cruise on the Westerdam a bit more than a year ago they had both someone hosting the solo lunch table and singles gatherings in the evenings. Not that I went to any because they're usually not all that well-attended, but it was nice to know they were available if I chose to go.

For all who want to cruise with this dear lady, please know that she is as witty and fun in person as she is in print. Not only that, but she is gorgeous as well.

We had a great week, so much so that I am secretly booking a partial Panama Canal cruise aboard the Zuiderdam for our next February break. My husband doesn't go on cruise critic, so you all are in on the secret.

Absolutely loving your reviews Coka! So glad you had a wonderful time!

I love the idea of finding out what day the crew has off and giving them something they can use ON THAT DAY. I've never actually thought of that in all my cruises (16 days til my 20th) and I will definitely make that my standard from now on!

Hi Elycelynne, I did not attend any solo gatherings. The Eurodam had a luncheon on the first day at sea. I did not see any single gatherings listed in the evenings. If not on future sailings, you may want to suggest it in the "I Want You To Know" cards they have available at reception. Or, just leave a letter/note request to the cruise director at reception asking for gatherings to be announced in the Explorer?

The Tamarind Restaurant and Silk Den:

Two of the best kept secrets onboard the Eurodam due to their mid-ship top level location. Had I discovered the Silk Den the first two days of the cruise, I would have gone up there in the middle of the night to sleep on the comfy couches! The least vibration/motion is felt mid ship when cruising. The Silk Den had a Pan Asian theme and each couch bed area has hanging sheer curtains to separate one from the other. Not very big for a lounge, the whole arrangement reminded me of indoor private cabanas. Chairs were set up along the windows. The bar had comfortable seats and a view of the ocean as well as a view of the liquor bottles.

I reserved the Tamarind restaurant online but changed it prior to leaving on the trip. I knew enough to bring email receipts of all transactions. Once onboard I received the reservation card (complete with notes to myself!) for the original date and not the corrected one. The Maitre D was gracious enough to let me dine on the corrected date/time instead of the one they had record of. I was seated and very glad to have brought my progressive glasses to read the menu choices. I seriously could have only eaten the shrimp crackers with three sauce choices and felt like I had my money’s worth. I continued with jewels and sea (shrimp filled won ton soup), pot stickers (dumplings), and curry coconut chicken (spicy chicken, snow peas, eggplant, zucchini, basil, lemongrass, and limejuice…all mixed in with red curry and coconut milk…I wanted to bathe in it), and steamed jasmine rice. For dessert I ordered the tempura coconut ice cream.

My Tamarind experience was enhanced with conversation from the elderly 4 star Mariner couple seated at the next table over. I thought they figured I might as well join their discussion as opposed to listening to it. But I clarified being from a family of 13 and working in a building with 2200 people, that I had an uncanny ability to tune out my surroundings and that I did not know what they were talking about. I was too into my awesome meal! In truth, my hearing is not as sharp as it used to be! Even so, neither of us were insulted and we all had a good laugh. He re-told to me whatever it was he was mentioning to his wife and we continued with a lovely time thereafter exchanging war stories about double knee replacement surgeries...

Kids OnBoard!

I talked to a few passengers who were a bit freaked at the number of kids on board (about 210) this President’s Week sailing. My mother taught me when something is bad, to find something worse going on elsewhere, and then everything seems to be not so bad after all with your situation. So I told the freaked passengers that if they were on any other cruise line, there would not be 210 kids, but 1,210 of them on board this week. They walked away feeling a lot better. In my opinion, the teens and youngsters were all enjoying themselves the entire week any time I saw them. The crew had activities planned for the teenagers in the late evenings because one lounge was closed off to the adults for their gatherings. HAL had karaoke and dances planned for them most nights. Their only glitch of the week was on the last evening when the farewell dance party was canceled. I talked to some teens who were very disappointed. So I told them how lucky they were to have had the number of activities on the other nights during this national school vacation week because had they sailed any other week, they might not have had so many opportunities. They walked away feeling a lot better.

Help, I’ve Fallen And Can Not Get Up…or Uh-Oh Am I Getting Old Moments

When a young whipper snapper kept passing me on the promenade walk. Hey, I am used to being the fastest walker onboard so this was knawing at me. That is until I discovered she was the personal trainer in the gym…

When the guys in officer uniforms looked like a bunch of kids instead of salty sea-faring buccaneers…

When using the metal chopsticks in Tamarind my fingers started to hurt…

When heading towards Senor Frogs in San Juan I turned right around after customers were zig zagging out while wearing animal balloons on their heads…

When some thought the twenty-something year olds onboard were my kids…and realizing they very well could have been…

When missing my jump landing into the stateroom bed after lights out and finding myself crash landed on the cabin floor praying I did not just break my hip…

I screamed out loud and pointed while gazing at the sea on an open public deck, "Oh my god! A giant whale just jumped straight up out of the water and flipped over and dove back in!"...everyone stared blankly as I asked if anybody else saw it...as nobody else did...

Other Secrets and Tidbits Of The Eurodam:

If you tend to tip extra, you will need to carry cash because there is no place on the receipts to give more.
Although it costs 15 quarters for a maximum spin…play that maximum amount on the Big Wheel of Fortune slot machine. I began with forty dollars and ended up with 80 and quit. The next night I put back in forty dollars and ended up with 300. The last night I thought about going back down after putting my luggage out to see what 100 would earn me. Never did it and therefore my secret is to quit while you are ahead. My entire gambling experience took 5 minutes out my vacation week…

It is very easy to walk with a cup of coffee from the buffet…the mugs are tall and the best ever in my cruise ship experiences. If you want cappucino, espresso, latte, hot or iced, go to the Crow’s Nest to the java bar (for a minimal cost).

There is a free sauna onboard that does not require you to sign up for the spa. When leaving the mid lido pool port side going forward to the salon/spa, look for a hallway door to the right marked “sauna.” Inside is a changing area, shower and sauna that is no cost to use.

You really can bring wine onboard!

Do not wear blue and white striped nautical top and blue or white pants to the Cannaletto restaurant…that is what the servers wear! I almost went there and they almost put me to work...

If you like to eat in the lido buffet, my favorite table was the one at the far end (near the salad bar) by the window that juts out. If nobody sits across from you, you have a great view of the water and the ship’s side.

If you miss lunch in restaurant or buffet, they still serve enough afterwards including pizza, paninis, sandwiches, pizza, burgers/hotdogs/fries, AND most important to me…they even kept the pasta station and international station open…

Teens reported the pizza was good...

If you do the pasta station, ask server to combine the marinara and the alfredo sauces on your selection…

There is a comfy movie theater onboard. Staterooms also have a pamphlet with hundreds of movie DVDs to choose from if you want to watch something there. New releases included Morning Glory, Inception, Salt, Unstoppable, Red, Knight and Day, and The Social Network...

The Ocean Bar serves hors d’oeuvres on a plate when you order a cocktail.

The Deluxe Verandahs are very nice! I particularly liked the ones I visited on last morning, 7065, 7067, and 7069.

The corner aft verandahs (do not know category but occupant said it was the lowest category suite) are even nicer! The balcony is wraparound from the stern to the side. The size is awesome.

MOST AWESOME was the grand poo-bah penthouse suite. There are only two onboard and a very nice family invited me to theirs (7031). I absolutely fell in love with the décor…I felt like I was on a true classic ocean liner. Leather seating, deep woods, gorgeous bathroom, living room, bedroom, dining, balcony areas, walk in closet, and a pantry space.

You can stay in your cabin until ready to debark the ship (although it really IS helpful to the stewards if you leave earlier…there is plenty of public space to wait…remember how my stateroom was ready upon boarding…it was a good feeling and leaving early helps with the next round of cruisers coming onboard)...

Conclusion:

So I boarded the Eurodam with one mindset and I debarked with another. She ended up being more than just my transportation to warmer climates. She gave me a different perspective on a few things. She, along with the passengers who sailed her, taught me how to embrace the aging process without ever really getting older. The most youthful woman onboard was an 83 year young employed travel agent who still has future goals. I also did not feel as guilty as I thought I would sailing a different cruise line other than NCL. My family, friends, and colleagues were very surprised when I told them where I was going to vacation…! Overall, the entire cruise was very refreshing, relaxing, and rejuvenating. I left the Eurodam not stressed at all to reach my next destination. Holland America Line is not an old person’s cruise line I told everyone back home. Instead, HAL is for the young at heart. Through their excellence, a once in a life time experience was indeed created and I certainly can not wait to have another one!

Thank you to the HAL cruise critics for being so very nice and so very welcoming to me. I appreciated the insights you gave prior to me leaving. Again, if you have any questions, I will do my best to answer them!

Fantastic review! We were in the other penthouse in December. 7031 is a little more with black and grey throughout... darker colors. 7036 has more of an emphasis on brightness and some orange accents. They were amazing though.

The aft corners are category SC or SB depending on the deck it's on.

Nieuw Amsterdam has a third "den" in Silk Den whereas Eurodam has just the 2.

Tamarind's Shrimp Crackers were seriously my drug of choice the two nights I dined there. I expect many more of them in my 2 weeks on Nieuw Amsterdam :D

I truly hope we get to welcome you back onboard again soon coka!

Hi, Coka!

In your traipse around the various cabins, did you get a chance to see a handicapped cabin?

I'm asking because when we travelled with Mom on HAL we really appreciated the services available for handicapped cruisers, and the attention that everyone gave to her. I thought that the line might be a good one for you and your sisters - though I wonder how the other passengers might take it
(Just joking)

- A thought for you

Coka,
As another person whose time for a dam change has also come, I thank you for your review.

I'm taking my first HAL cruise next month, and you've helped soothe my minimally-ruffled feathers. I'm at an awkward age, where I want to dance like I did as a teenager, but realizing that a Poise pad might be appropriate while I'm bouncing around the dance floor. But, I was worried that HAL might not even offer the dance experience I prefer. I feared that they'd be playing Lawrence Welk when I'd want Lady Gaga. I was really glad to hear that you could get techno by request, even if it has to be when others aren't around. I mean, that's how I get my exercise while on a cruise!

I chose this cruise because of where it's going and the price, which is the reason for any cruise I choose. I know I'll have a great time, regardless. (Actually, I like Lawrence Welk style of music, too!) Your review has assured me that I won't stick out like a sore thumb--only my newly-enlarged stomach will. Stupid hormones! Now, if I can only figure out how to get that flat-board belly again, without giving up bread pudding...

Thanks Coka, wonderful and thorough review. So glad you enjoyed your HAL cruise. We've actually met and sailed together on the NCL Dream 2 night Mother's Day cruise from Boston several years ago! :D

DH and I alternate between NCL and HAL, last year on the Norwegian Spirit out of New Orleans (fabulous cruise despite lousy weather) and in less than 2 weeks, the Noordam (first time) Both lines have merit, NCL more relaxed, HAL more "old school" in a very good way. :) We are going to try anytime dining on HAL for the first time...

Again, thanks for the time and effort you put into this entertaining review.

Coka,

I have read some of your posts before on NCL's CC site.... This is also our first HAL and we are thrilled at your review... Both now being over sixty we look forward to a quiet March 19th cruise. Last year on the GEM there were just too many college kids. We have our last child in Grad school and happy that our COLLEGE days are almost over. We are also looking forward to formal dining again as it was years ago on NCL.. Not opposed to Freestyle, but miss the option to get to know our server and for them to get to know us and our likes and dislikes... Keep the comments coming.

Thanks,

.... Do you have any stateroom and Public Area photos that you'd be willing to email me for the HAL Staterooms/Cabins Pages for Eurodam???

Joanie

Hi Joanie, I am sorry that I do not have any pictures to contribute. I tend to be a no picture, no video kind of gal on vacation and rely more on my pen. Although, now that I know HAL has the technology workshops, I would consider buying a digital camera and bringing it next time.

Did you get a chance to see a handicapped cabin? I'm asking because when we travelled with Mom on HAL we really appreciated the services available for handicapped cruisers
Annette

Hi Annette! I totally did not even think of that. I am sure the HC cabins are more wonderful since the able bodied cabins were huge! I can only imagine...! If I had to leave a note to myself on the dining reservation cards "remember to call hubby the next morning in port", then it does not surprise me I did not remember my sister at debarkation!

Tenngal, ROFL! You will be just as pleasantly surprised as I was. They have plenty of dancing onboard. People danced in the lounges and at the pool bar just like they do on other lines. Charlie and the Hal Cats had dancing at their venues also. Keep in mind the dance floors were not crowded but when people wanted to dance, they did!

They also had "learn to waltz" and "learn to cha-cha" during the days at sea.

Late Night in Northern Lights the DJ played a wide range of dance music. Again, never really crowded but that was sort of nice. I had no issue dancing on my own (plenty of experience on other cruises and in Montreal clubs) and in my case the more room on the floor the better for me...and for the other dancers! You can get your workout there...just go earlier than usual...meaning go at 11pm because some nights the DJ ended at 1am.

OH...it was also a nice change hearing different music all throughout the ship. When I was sleeping/sunning at the aft pool in St. Thomas port, there was a relaxing classical, broadway, oldies music playing. They were all familiar tunes and none made me chuckle...all made me think "wow, this is really a refreshing change!" So embrace the change! There is not a dam thing we can do about it! LOL

Hi coka!
What a wonderful review. I have read many of your adventures and you continue to find the best of life no matter what line you sail on. The only thing better than reading your reviews is actually being on a cruise with you and I have been lucky enough to do that twice!

Hi Jim! If I am not on the Gem with you and Liz for our birthdays, it is because I am on the Veendam...so we CAN indeed see each other in Bermuda! We will have to jump hand in hand in the ocean instead of in the pool...:D

I alternate between NCL and HAL, last year on the Norwegian Spirit out of New Orleans (fabulous cruise despite lousy weather) and in less than 2 weeks, the Noordam (first time) Both lines have merit, NCL more relaxed, HAL more "old school" in a very good way. :) We are going to try anytime dining on HAL for the first time...
Kathy

Hi Kathy! I was VERY impressed with the Eurodam's open seating dining. I still do not know if I was doing it correctly but I like that they seat people by filling up the tables as you enter. This worked well for me because I sat with different people each night and sometimes had the same passengers at them. It seemed HAL passengers enjoy sharing their tables more so than NCL passengers do. HAL will take you back to the old NCL days! Be sure to attend the last night's dinner! Lots of fun and for the first time ever I did not feel sorry for the waitstaff...as they really loved doing what they did that last night!

. Not opposed to Freestyle, but miss the option to get to know our server and for them to get to know us and our likes and dislikes... Keep the comments coming.
Ann and Bernie

Hi Ann and Bernie, the traditional seating was in the upstairs section of the Rembrandt dining room. I think it is smaller than the downstairs open seating dining and therefore will enhance even more the experience you seek! Have a great cruise!

Just mentioned to my husband, who is not on CC, that I was reading one of the best reviews that I have read in a long time on CC. Thank you for your witty, thoughtful and informative review. I so enjoyed.

That is a deal! It is much less risky jumping in the ocean unless we jump off the Somerset Bridge:eek:! we will find a way to connect on the island.

Thanks, Coka, for a very entertaining review and thread. I only just started reading it a few days ago. Curiosity got the better of me when it stayed at the top of the page for so many days...... And now I know why.

I've been rationing it....... Just a bit a day....... So, I really hope you have another HAL cruise REAL SOON!

Hi there Coka!

Tks so much for sending me the link to your wonderful review! It's very interesting to read about your experiences after many NCL cruises. Having met you, I know you'd light up any venue on any ship!:D

Did you go to any of the Culinary demos/classes? A friend of ours who sails HAL a lot was recently raving to me about them. Sounds like fun.

Had to laugh at your tucking in "early" after your usual dancing till the wee hours.;)

Glad to hear DH may join you cruising one of these days. Excellent!

Can you explain a bit more about the open dining - not sure what you mean by receiving "cards" each day (or not, depending on the case). After doing freestyle, I don't think I could do assigned seating. Sounds like you had a good experience, especially since you enjoy eating with others. What about if you prefer to dine alone - or in a couple? Any tables for 2?

Would love to hear a little more about evening meals you enjoyed. You have my mouth watering with the king crab legs.;):)

Thanks so much for such a great fun read!

Coka, as always loved your review, and happy the cruise was so much more than just transportation. I have been on HAL cruises, and always laughed when I see folks say it is only for old folks. DW has not yet sailed HAL, but it is on the horizon.

Thrilled your husband will be cruising soon. Your prayers are being answered. Happy to have NOT heard from you during the cruise. Actually, I kind of figured HAL would be easier than some other cruise lines, cause most of the cruisers, quit. Let me know if that is a valid thought.

Hi Barb,
I did not attend any culinary classes. I did speak with some during the week who went and they enjoy them. Some classes you just watch while others you can partake in. I never saw the culinary area. I think my personal chef would enjoy taking these classes so I am thinking of taking him along with me next time. My personal chef, Mr. coka that is.

I did pass the Executive Chef on the stairwell and complimented him on the dining experience/food. A family with a little guy was behind me and the little guy was so amazed that he came across the chef who actually oversaw the meals onboard. My theory about the passengers seeing the officers walking around the ship still holds true: Passengers of all ages eat that kind of stuff up! It only takes a moment and the little guy has a vacation memory of meeting him.

The open seating...I think it is the same as on NCL...you show up whenever you want to eat during the dining room hours in the downstairs section of dining room (which is the bigger section). The first few days I was asked if I wanted to share a table and responded yes so the rest of the week they remembered this and therefore shared. If one does not want to share a table, then you just let them know you prefer a table for x amount. You might get one right away, you might have to wait. I also heard you could make reservations ahead of time for the time you wanted to eat during the open seating hours. I remember seeing tables with all sorts of numbers including tables for two.

Since I attended the late shows (which surprised me because the second show was at 10pm!) I usually went to the dining room around 8:15 and then to the show afterwards with never a problem getting seated. Keep in mind I was seeking out the less busy dining room times. Even so, I am thinking as a solo, it would have been easy to be seated any time.

On the last night they have a special dinner in the dining room. Remember years ago all lines had the waiters prancing around with baked alaska on their heads and afterwards they were forced to sing god bless america songs? Well, it is not like that thank goodness. Instead, the waiters do some other things while serving you the courses...while Charlie from the Hal Cats sings...and it was a fun ending to the week. Throughout, I watched the faces of the waiters...because I think I am good at reading people...and they seemed to actually have a blast themselves during this dinner.

Likewise, I would watch them during the happy anniversary/happy birthday songs. I felt sooooooo guilty I checked the box during the booking I was celebrating an anniversary. If asked, it would be something like the 8th month, 14th day, 12th hour of quitting smoking or something like that. Being new, I wanted to see what happens on board for anniversary. Well, after eating everyone's anniversary cakes all week long and hearing the waiters sing all week long, I concluded this would be the one thing I would change...or make people prove...they seriously had to sing about 600 times that week. Fortunately, my anniversary was not recognized.

The passengers and the conversations made every meal enjoyable. Remember where I come from. My dad's prisoners ate better than we did when little kids. I will never ever have a bad meal.

Oh...the cards...I have no idea. Some of the people I dined with said they received cards with a time and a table number on some nights of the week but not others. I received a card on the last night (I figured because the dinner was a special serve everyone at once thing so the waiters could do what they do.

Hopefully, the experts here will be able to answer.

Joanie, we're on Deck 5 on the Nieuw Amsterdam in 2 weeks. What photographs do you need from the ship? I know it'll drive DW crazy, but she'll get over it!

Photos of everything please:) Staterooms, Public Areas, everything. I want to have photos that show the ship from a passenger's point of view. Basically, what you want to see when you are researching for a cruise.

Now, now, be nice to the wife!! She will be the most important person on your cruise and you do not want to make her unhappy:)

Al

Hi Al! Thank you for being there for me in internet-land in case I needed someone to help me! Actually, when I walked down the hallway there was a smoker in a cabin...and I could smell it from the hallway. There was smoking in the casino and casino bar and although not too smokey, it had the smokey smell. The cartons on HAL are 33 or so dollars but they did not carry my brand. I even sat in the smoking section of the aft lido pool with and talked to people there who were all smoking...and I did not want one! Fortunately, this was the first cruise where the smell did not "draw me in" or "make me think about just one." So my dear friend...you are indeed correct...it gets easier with time. I even spent three days afterwards with a good friend who still smokes and I had an urge maybe once. It has been 8 months and I guess I could say I went on a ten day vacation with the savings I had from not buying cigarettes.

The odd part...I always fibbed the excuse it was the air conditioning on the ships and FL hotel rooms whenever I came home with my voice sounding like a croaky frog (um, due to smoking way too many Virginia's). I came home this time the same way...perhaps indeed it IS! LOL

HAL did have a survey at the end of the week. A special one asking about smoking and if I smoked would I not cruise HAL if they banned it. I thought it nice they were polling passengers about smoking/non-smoking on their ships.

Coka - when is your next cruise? I would love to sail with you

Really enjoyed the review!!!

Hi Dee, sailing NCL Star in Feb. 2012 but I am looking at the Veendam this summer to Bermuda or the Maasdam to the Eastern Canadian Provinces. I see you like cruising too!

I think everyone on this thread (and well, errr, me too hehe) should all take a cruise :-)

To the OP thank you for your reviews, they have been fantastic :-) You'll also appreciate them for yourself when you go back and read them and relive your adventure.

To the person who asked about handicapped cabins, I was in one on the Nieuw Amsterdam (5051) in October and Joanie has tons of pictures of my cabin (taken by yours truly) so if you wanted to see one, please see her page! If you have any other questions, feel free to ask!

i want to be planning my next 'dam vacation!

Seriously...Coka...your writing skill and delightful personality have kept me up reading way past my intended bedtime! And I lose an hour of sleep with the clocks advancing tonite as well.
I share your affection for both NCL and HAL for many of the very reasons you have cited above.
It was a pleasure to see them put into words so eloquently.
And rest assured, you will have a big following on the HAL board.

I could only imagine what it would be like to be on a cruise with both yourself and tomc....
