View Full Version : Does your alcohol consumption change on a cruise?

Do you think you drink more on a cruise than you do in every day life or in comparison to other types of vacations? I usually only have a glass of wine a few nights a week normally, but on a cruise I certainly increase my consumption!
What's your favorite cocktail? I'm quite partial to vodka gimlets, just wish they weren't so sweet!

I would think many of us imbibe more on the ship. After all, we don't have to worry about driving. We usually go through a month with maybe a drink a week on average, but it is more like a drink or two a day on board.
The last cruise we ended up with wine on the formal nights at dinner, as we were at a table for 10 and the ship's doctor and his wife joined us those evenings. A perc that came from having them at our table was a free bottle of wine courtesy of the ship. There were a lot of nondrinkers at our table, so those of us who chose to join in would have a couple of glasses with dinner.
I tend to vary my drink choice, but my spouse is a rusty nail fan when we hit the bar in the evening.

I drink very rarely at home, so my drinking does go up. But I have to agree with Comeaux about the prices. I would drink more on a cruise if the prices were lower. Oh well, this way I only have food to help me put on weight.:o

There wasn't a choice for us. We usually have 2 drinks before dinner and after dinner drink while watching TV at home. We do the same thing on a cruise.

With three kids we probably need to drink more!! Ha Ha, anyway, this will be my second cruise, my dh first, so I imagine we will drink more. No children to worry about caring for on board, no driving, drinks readily available. But, I also don't want to drink too much. It just messes with the body as you get older. Definitely not like when your younger and can handle it.
Here's to that great glass of Merlot! Here I come in 79 days!!!
Enjoy everyone,
Christy

I rarely if ever drink at home. I work nights and due to the nature of my life, plus the strict rules my employer has regarding being "impaired" on the job (even slightly), I just don't make the consumption of alcohol a part of my daily life. I have plenty of other vices I can engage in at home. :)
But, I've found that nothing helps me to relax more than sitting in a quiet bar at the end of a long day at sea or in port, sipping on a nice big pina colada. Don't get me wrong ... I'm still not much of a drinker at sea either. I'm talking one pina colada ... most often a medium size ... enjoying it with some good conversation in a quiet lounge ... right before heading back to my stateroom and to bed.
Talk about relaxation! Life doesn't get any better than that! :)

I said yes. The main reason is because I don't have to drive anywhere or go to work. I am glad the prices aren't lower or I might over indulge.

I hardly ever drink at home with the exception of a Champagne Brunch occasionally on Sundays. Tom (DH) will occasionally have a beer once in a while at home, he likes Killiams Red and 6 bottles of those last a month. We normally like champagne and I have so many bottles here at home and we just never drink them but.....on a cruise is a different story. To be going on a cruise is a celebration of life, relaxation and our time together. Everyday on the cruise is a special celebration so we do indulge. We have a bottle of champagne every night some times 2 bottles. Tom will have a few beers during the day and I have had a few of what ever the drink special might be in the afternoon. This next cruise I plan to try the Flaming Coffees that Krazy Kruizer told us about. Another poster mentions that they thought more people drank because you did not have to drive, I totally agree. That is one of the reasons I barely drink at home because I do not want to have a drink then drive home. Also someone mentioned about being too pricey, with living in Las Vegas I totally dissagree. Booze on the ship is far cheaper than here in Vegas. We get our champagne on the ship for $22.00 a bottle but here in Vegas at restaurants for another type of Asti (not as good) we pay $26 to $30 a bottle. Also Most mixed drinks here cost $8.00 to $12.00 Yes, some less but Las Vegas is expensive. Then you might say but when I am in the casino they bring me free drinks think about it, How much $ did you just pour into that slot machine while waiting for that drink:confused: Trust me you paid big for the drink. I actually think the HAL does pretty good when it comes to the cost of the extras like drinking.

Um ... that's why they call them "boat drinks"!!!
How can I resist those frozen concoctions?
We don't drink at home, unless we have company, although DH makes a great margarita.
Occasionally we'll have drinks when we dine out.
On vacation, there is nothing more relaxing than sipping a 'rita or other frozen drink and breathing in all that ocean air ...

I drink more while on a ship. However my total alcohol bill is rarely if ever over $100 for a week cruise. I prefer a glass of wine with dinner and maybe 3-5 drinks total at other times during the cruise.

I drink a little bit more on a cruise.
What the big difference is with me is what I drink. I am a beer drinker at home, maybe occasionally have a shot of Jack Daniels, but by and large a beer drinker.
On a cruise I will indulge in a "Foo Foo drink" as they are called here. I would never order one at home in a bar or restaurant, but something about being on a ship or on an island just makes you want to have one.
Its like going to Hawaii and just having to have to get a Hawaiian shirt , a straw hat and a lei. You would never be caught dead in these things at home, but as they say
"When in Rome....." or Hawaii as the case maybe :) :) :)

Due to my age alcohol now makes me sleepy unless I keep active. So at home the consumption has dropped. But on the ship an extra drink or two in the evening or with diner doesn't kick in until I go to bed. I have been known, however, to doze during some of the less interesting floor shows.

We drink more - the main factor involves being able to drink without driving. We just need to remember where the cabin is! ;)

More, Of course!
Funny thing is, I found myself drinking less on the gay cruise than I did on the str8 cruise...

Mostly Champagne - but in the Ocean Bar before dinner, a Manhattan...

Very well put. ABSOLUTLY!!!!!! I can't think of a better way to end the day, whether at sea or in port, than being on the Verandah with my beautiful wife, drink in one hand, arm around her with the other and watching the sun-set. Just a perfect way to end the day. "I'll have another one please"........Are we there yet???.....

I drink much more on a cruise! IRL I'm allowed a drink a week, but on a cruise the doctor ok's a drink a day.
Wonder if that's why I take month-long cruises?
Now in the good old days you could count my non-cruise drinks per year on your fingers, but on a cruise! Seven a day.

According to the poll, 20% don't drink at home or onboard.
One-fifth wouldn't touch a fifth. They think you buy Four Roses at a florist. You go to the Ocean Bar, they go to the sand bar. They say, "I'd rather have a frontal lobotomy than a bottle in front o'me," while you say, "I'd rather have a bottle in front o'me than a frontal lobotomy."

At home we drink wine occasionally with dinner. On a cruise we tend to have wine every night. At home we might have a mixed drink once a month. On a cruise we will have one in the Ocean Bar or Piano Bar at least three or four times on a ten day cruise. Not exactly big drinkers in any case, but the relaxed atmosphere and enjoyable company increases the likelihood we'll indulge ourselves a bit.

Has been ages since I've had one as am not a big scotch fan but if memory serves me right (and that's not always the case at 57) a rusty nail is a combination of scotch and drambuie liquer, not sure of the proportions. I'd sooner dump the drambuie in a cup of coffee.. but to each their own
as for drinking more on vacations in general , absolutely.. we might have a drink once a month at home.. 2 and 3 a day while on vacation.. just part of the getaway experience.. and dw says she will disown me if I bring back any more cheap booze from st thomas as the liquor cabinet is filled to overflowing now.. but hey.. SHE's the one who can never pass up a bargain elsewhere..
just give me a margarita, palm trees and jimmy B in the background singin 5:00 somewhere and life is GOOD....

This is definitely an interesting question. I've seen threads like this before and my guess would have been in line with what the poll shows - yes, people do drink more. After all, alcohol is a social lubricant.
I'm replying to this thread b/c I coincidentally found a website that might be appropriate to post in here (I was, however, searching for weight loss information). The site is:
www.AlcoholScreening.org (http://www.AlcoholScreening.org)
I have no opinion on its advice, just thought others would like to check it out.
Safe sailing everyone!

We drink A LOT more on the ship. DW and I both enjoy our cruises to the maximum and like to drink. We start every day with some tasty bloody marys on the verandah with, or just before breakfast :) Hey, we're on vacation and not driving anywhere. We usually have a 2 martini lunch and a few pre-dinner cocktails, vodka martinis for DW and scotch for me. Every night we enjoy a bottle of Champagne on the verandah before calling it a night. The funny thing is, we never really get "drunk". We just tend to be happy all day long :D As someone else wrote, a cruise is a celebration of life. And we like to celebrate.
Remember, we're on vacation and we like to drink. We dont really drink all that much at home, unless there is a good reason.

In reply to what a Rusty Nail is...Drambuie and Scotch.
I tend to like drinks like daquiris and margaritas, and not the syrupy sweet versions. Frozen is good if we're someplace warm. This coming trip I may prefer a bit of Bailey's or Kahlua in some coffee or cocoa.

wow..I'd be either dead or asleep! :) Sounds like you certainly do celebrate on a cruise. Do you bring your own alcohol with you in order to keep your bar bill reasonable, or do you not need to worry about that?

We do like to celebrate. The wife and I both have extremely demanding career commitments and 60+ hour work weeks are quite common for us. When we vacation, its our time to really enjoy life for a week or two. We are fortunate in the fact thet we do not really have to worry about how much we spend. If we had to worry about it, then we would feel like we really cannot afford to cruise. We do buy liquor from HAL for in our cabin. We usually buy champagne in port. We also buy plenty from the bars in the ship.
All I can say is, we have a very good time. :D

Yes, isn't that one of the perks of cruising? Relaxation at its best! :p
Actually I have no clue if I drink more or less. I don't think it really matters.
I have a great time, I remember it, and I have a great time!!! What could be better? :p
