I see Crystal has several different options for dancing and entertainment?

What are options for dancing or entertainment while on board a cruise to Alaska?

Not looking for specifics...just tell me what it is like or options for these activities...:D

I assume that you're asking specifically about HAL. I'm also trying to get the same information, but so far it's been sketchy. I'll pass on the situation as I understand it while hoping that if someone has better information they'll join the thread.

First, it will depend to some extent upon which ship you're on. I think they have the Ocean Bar on all HAL ships, but the floor is quite small.

All HAL ships also have the Crow's Nest, which I think still has a dance floor; but I'm not sure how much dancing there is. Formerly the Rosario Strings played wonderful dance music there, but these combos were eliminated several years ago. I think a DJ starts playing about 10PM, but our experience has been that they don't play music that is enjoyable to most of the passengers. If you're younger, this may be something you'll be interested in.

Then on the larger ships they'll have the Queen's Lounge in which members of the ship's orchestra will hopefully play on at least a few nights.

On HAL ships, we have found the Ocean Bar to be the venue for ballroom dancing. Unfortunately, the dance floors are not very large. Typically, we find it to get crowded with more than about 6 to 8 couples, depending on the type of song being played by the combo and the nature of the dancing going on. However, our experience has been that most people in the Ocean Bar do not participate in dancing. So, it works out pretty well for us. ;)

it really depends on the class of ship that you are on

all classes os ships have the adagio strings playing classical music in the explorer's lounge - no dancing here

the ships that have the new MIX bar concept have a guitarist playing from 5 pm - 9 pm and then in the piano section there is piano player from 9 pm to around 11 or midnight -- these ships would be the statendam, veendam, ryndam, maasdam and rotterdam -- no dancing here

all the ships have the ocean bar -- dancing here -- starts at 7 pm

the ryndam, veendam, maasdam, statendam and rotterdam have disco music starting around 9 pm -- dancing here

the vista class ships and the signature class ships -- oosterdam, zuiderdam, westerdam, noordam, eurodam and nieuw amsterdam have a guitarist playing late in the evening in the crow's nest -- no dancing

the vista class ships and the signature class ships have the northern lights - disco music -- gancing here

Thanks for the info, Krazy. I'd forgotten about Northern Lights on the Vista class ships. What about the DJ's playing disco music. Is this in the Crow's Nest on the R and S class ships, and will they deign to play any music that those of us who are older might enjoy?

The affinity that HAL has for disco music, which very few of their pax seem to enjoy, mystifies me. (Wouldn't it be nice if HAL were to hire some mature CD's and DJ's?) It is my observation that by about ten minutes after the DJ cranks up, the place empties. Maybe in about twenty years that music will be popular with their passengers, but HAL will probably be off on some other musical tangent by that time.
