View Full Version : 1st time cruiser questions

We are an early 40's couple vacationing without the children, for the 1st time in years. We've never done a cruise before but are decently well travelled. We booked an SS cabin on the Westerdam.

We have a few questions.

We love room service for breakfast. Do you pre-order in the evening or do you call when you want it? Is the entire breakfast menu available?

Are both pools available for sun bathing and lounging around in bathing suits? From the diagram of the ship it looks like the forward pool is surrounded by a restuarant? Ar poolside lounge chair difficult to come by, it's our major daily activity?

Is the casino open during the day or just in the evening?

We did receive our packet of papers from HAL, we have the 8:30 lower seating(just what we wanted), do they gear the shows for the early seating or the late seating or do they have 2 identical shows following each seating?

Thanks in advance

Room service has a door tag to be filled out and hung on door the night before. They do not offer everything available, mostly eggs, bacon, sausage, fresh fruit, cereal, muffins, toast, juice, coffee etc.

Both pools are available for sunbathing. The center (main) pool does have the Lido resturant aft of it, you need a coverup to go in there. Pool chairs can be hard to come by depending on the time of day. They are more available at the aft pool.

The casino is only open when at sea. If we are at sea during the day it is open.

Just like dinner, the shows are early and late. The late show starts about 10 pm.

Hope this answered your questions. We were on the Westerdam in January. She is a lovely ship. Have a great cruise. :D

You can also awake and decide on the spur of the moment that you want breakfast in your cabin. Simply pick up the phone and call for it! Easy as pie. (Pie for breakfast? )

If there's something you want that's not listed on the hang-tag write it in. And do be specific about what you want. Butter, sugar, salt/pepper, how many of each, should be listed out.

Enjoy your cruise, and welcome to our addiction!

The one exception to the two shows rule is the crew show which will start around 11:15 for all seatings.

To reiterate what Ruth said, for breakfast just write in on the tag anything you might want and it'll be at your door at the indicated time. If you wait to call in the AM it might take awhile (depending on how many people have ordered room service breakfast) but it's hard to beat breakfast on the verandah - especially on an at-sea day!

Make that an "Egg McMuffin".

(I was too late to edit the prior post)

Those early morning (6:15) coffee and rolls out on the balcony, watching the sun come up, with our feet up, are the best!!!!! Sure do miss them! Your room attendant will leave a menu on your bed each nite, all you do is fill it out, how many you want of each, if you don't see something you want such as salt, pepper, sugar, raisin rolls, yum my favorite, just write it in and it will be delivered at whatever time you circled. They are very punctual! We usually gave them a tip each morning when they came. They are so friendly that early in the morning. Have fun on your cruise!

I would also suggest you make yourself a backup of your order or pay close attention to what is delivered. (I can't think before my first cup of coffee!) They always read through the order upon delivery, but we missed the condiments (butter and cream cheese) we ordered for our bagels. My sister had the same thing happen. Dry toasted bagels are pretty boring! Besides that mistake, we always got what we ordered - multiple cups of coffee, salt, pepper, etc.

When you order room service, is there an additional service charge per order?

Nope, although you should tip the stward who brings it (a couple of bucks)...
