View Full Version : We need not bother to tie ribbons on our luggage

I hurt my disc in my neck and lower back...again, so DH and I went to look for new luggage and found some that is sturdy, rollable, ultra light weight, extended handles (I am tall) and on sale. The kicker is...it is BRIGHT sky blue. :o I wanted the red or black, but it was much more and DH said no. The sky blue was at a special sales price...I wonder why?

One by one, when our children saw the new luggage, they died laughing! DH said he is fine with the color. I will be embarrassed when we roll through the airport, but the nice thing is that it will not be mistaken for any other luggage...no pom poms or ribbons needed. :)

It is very nice, well made luggage by Delsey. Here is what it looks like (we paid more at Proffitt's then this site :( .) http://origin-www.luggagesource.com/IBS/SimpleCat/Shelf/ASP/Hierarchy/020A.html

Don't count on anyone else not having the same colour luggage. :)

We made that mistake at Xmas. Bought the red thinking we would be the only ones with it and it seemed that every other piece of luggage was RED :p . Couldn't believe how many there were not only at the airport but on the ship. Next time we travel, the ribbons or pompoms are going back on. :D

I liked the bright sky blue, but chose the red.

I think its a great color! Thanks for the site. I need a new 25" bag, and this is a good price. But maybe I'll get the red!

Don't count on the ribbons or pom-poms either! Half the bags we see have some sort of colored ribbon or yarn attached.

We use the neon colored tags we get from our TA - I like the neon lime green - they are easy to spot a mile away.

What really bugs me - I still see people reaching for my bag. One guy had it ready to roll away and my DD said "Mom, that's ours!" and pointed him out - I ran over and sure enough, he didn't even notice the bright neon luggage tag. If it hadn't been there, my daughter probably would have missed him taking it.

How funny!

I went through almost the exact same thing last week - looking for a new Tumi bag but very hesitatant on paying full-fare!
The lady at the luggage store showed me the new T3 bags in black & when I asked if they had it in Silver, she said no - but she had one of the discontinued "Storm Blue" there for 1/3 off!

Mine!

Looks like this one on eBay:

Like you, shouldn't have trouble finding this on the luggage carousel this weekend!

I had a set of Blue w/Grey trim Lands End Luggage for a thousand years - got tired of the bright color and lack of wheels before they wore out, but I never had to worry about which bag was mine!

Regarding appearance - who cares what your luggage looks like if you're OK with it?

Regarding accidental misidentification, on each piece of checked luggage we use a rainbow colored luggage strap around the center, color (bright day-glo yellow and pink) duct tape strapped around each handle and a name tag (United Airlines Red Carpet Club) attached.

Looks really, really ugly, but we can spot our pieces immediately. And although we aren't impressing any baggage handlers or strangers in the airport with our color coordination skills, we have not experienced any mistaken luggage situations.

I like the style...just not the color. The brand is European, and has a contemporary flare to it. It is unlike all the boxy black you see on the carousels.

We tied yellow curly ribbon on our luggage last year and someone tried to take it.

I had a cheap wheeled suitcase that I bought from my neighbor for $5. We took it to Hawaii and the airlines beat it up so bad that the wheeled/handles portion came off. There is really no need to get anything too expensive, because it gets so destroyed by the baggage handlers.

Our old khaki Eddie Bauer duffels are still in pretty good shape and have flown many times. I just can't lift them anymore. because of the color, we never had a problem finding them.

I chickened out! I bought the FIRE RED. It will be equally loud compared to the sky blue.

Do you put a white band around it?

We buy whatever luggage is on sale and weighs the less. We don't care about color. Lately we have discovered that the cruise lines have ruined more pieces of luggage than the airlines!

Host Walt - we also put those rainbowed colored straps around each suitcase.

And I put BIG macrame bows on both handles on all the suitcases along with luggage tags on both handles.

DH hasn't had a problem finding out luggage in years.

Every time I find a art color suitcase then on the next trip there are 500 of them.
I now have a dark green one and I painted pink and white dots all around the sides with acrylic paint.
Well now I find my bag in a second.
I don't think anyone will take the bag now.

I love that idea! We have 5 black duffles that look like EVERYBODY ELSES! We have to check everybody's luggage tags before we find our own! I'm going to ID it with something - maybe not covered in smilys (DH would disown me)- ... I think it's great to learn these tricks. Thanks!!:)

I try to go with large duffle bags ... preferably on wheels. Usually I can get them in patterns ... the louder the better. Never have a problem identifying my luggage and others don't mistakenly take it either. Hell, they probably wouldn't want to be caught dead with something that loud and gaudy! :) Doesn't bother me though. As long as it is big enough to hold everything, I'm happy.

Blue skies ...

Why be embarressed about the luggage? I doubt anyone cares what type of luggage you have. After a trip or two, it will look like it has been through a war zone.

ekerr19,

ou are giving away our secret color!!! :D Lime green used to work great but lately the secret is out, and instead of all those "pinks", I am seeing more and more lime green ribbons, yarn, tags etc.

We just bought the same luggage. Same color. I happen to like blue so it does not bother me at all. We are going on the Zuiderdam 3/5 to Eastern Carib. flying from Norfolk, Virginia to FLL. Will you be on our plane? Won't everyone be surprised with all this color coming off.:p Have Fun.

I hope I am on any plane. :( No, we are suppose to be going out of San Diego on the Oosterdam.I thought I was having teeth problems and was waiting for my appointment today to see an endo. I had already seen my regular dentist and he said everything looked fine. Now I think it is disk related.

I have had back and neck problems on and off, but nothing this severe. I was feeling some twinges last week and called to get a steroid pack. Trying to get into the orthopedic this morning. I did some lifting yesterday and really started hurting more.

The pain went from my upper teeth to a horrible pulling sensation in my lower gums and neck. I am most comfortable standing up and could not even lay down for sleep last night until 1:00 am (after taking several pain pills.)

I can't stay at the computer because it hurts too much. Please say a prayer that something can be done to help me and I can leave on Thursday. ;)

This trip was the first time I saw those large pom poms on people's luggage, we usually use those bandanas, I guess they are men's handkerchiefs, bright yellow, but they come in all colors now, and tie them to our handles. Otherwise, we have black bags, as do a thousand other people!!!!! It sure has come it handy, my husband picks our bags right out. I've seen some great new ones lately, maybe I'll change colors next cruise, get my husband all confused, bad ruthiegirl!

I know about the dentist deal. I just came from there. I was up all night with a tooth ache. I thought it was my left bottom molar. Wrong, it was my wisdom tooth. I thought he was going to put his knee in my chest to get it out. I am a baby when it comes to the dentist and my dentist was on vacation so he recommended this guy. He was great if I jumped he gave me another shot. I was in the chair for 1 1/2 hours. He only charged $131 because he kept me there so long. So, Sweetie, I am going to take a pill and say a prayer for you. Say one for me while you are at it. Thanks

After all you have been through with those airline seats, you just can't miss this cruise. Don't pick up anything but your fork until you get on the ship; and of course, you will be in my prayers.

Here I am almost in tears, I am in so much pain. :(
Back from the endo and he said my teeth are fine and it is either muscular or cervical/nerve related.

I guess I should back up a bit and tell you how this all started. Last week, I started having a sharp pain in my upper tooth area and while flossing, a little bit of filling came out. Went to the dentist and had it taken out. All was fine until two days later when my upper teeth started hurting like someone was pulling on them...kinda like it feels after you have had a retainer on your teeth. Thought it might be root damage and had dentist do an x-ray. He didn't see anything. Pain got worse and moved around the upper tooth areas. I also noticed (but didn't think anything of it) that the pain shifted when my head shifted or I bent over, picked up heavy objects, etc. I called and made an appointment for the endo. to take a look.

In the meantime, yesterday, my dog came in the house all wet from the rain. I didn't want her walking through the house, so I picked her up and carried her away from my body to the laundry room. I felt something give in my lower back and my neck. The pain in my upper teeth disappeared and radiated to the lower teeth with a horrible pulling sensation. The rest you know.

Still waiting on the orthopedic to call. I talked to his nurse and she said that if I was having cervical trouble, that the doctor didn't deal with that. News to me since he has been treating me for two years and even had me in physical therapy for a while. Wish I had continued with that and done my exercises now.

Anyway, he will not be in until 1:00 and the nurse is suppose to have him call me. She said I need to see a neurologist, which I did two years ago and they couldn't find anything, but all I had then is a little numbness in face, right leg and arm. I went through a battery of test, including brain scans to check and see if I had had a stroke. I kept telling all the doctors that it was a spinal problem.

It doesn't sound to promising for a quick cure to get out of town. A car ride and plane ride will be excruciating. I broke down and took some pain relievers today and am trying to be very careful. I am afraid of feeling too good and then permanently doing some damage before I can see someone. I keep feeling cracking and popping sounds from my upper and lower spine when I move.

Sorry, didn't mean to! We have the lime green and hot pink tags from the TA and you can't miss them - but someone almost got away with our bags last cruise.

I guess I don't understand why people don't take a quick second and actually read the luggage tag! Especially in this day and age when so much luggage looks identical.

Ouch!!!
Honey, let the dog run w/ his muddy paws all over the house - you can always get it cleaned later...

Please get your doctors to figure out what's wrong and get it taken care of so you can go and enjoy your trip!

Sorry you are in such pain, S7S. Will say a prayer for you.

The suitcase I fly with most often is purple. I love my purple suitcase. It's almost always the only one that color on the belt and always easy to spot. We bought new flowered suitcases for our upcoming cruise. Not the prettiest, but they were cheap and functional and will stand out. We never spend a lot on luggage. We've found the airlines/cruiselines don't care whether you spend a lot or a little - they will ruin them equally.:)

Just to clarify and just in case someone doesn't read every post on this thread, it is not S7S (Sail7Seas) who is in pain ... it is Sea Island Lady. Two very different people.

Felt I should clear that up.;)

Heather has it correct and I thank her for clarifying. Thanks, Heather.

I am not SeaIslandLady.

But I am sorry to hear that she is in pain. I hope you feel better soon.

SeaIslandLady, I will certainly say a prayer for you. I know you have been planning this cruise for a while and have been so excited. I know this is a far fetched but have you tried a Chiroprator. I know that when I have had back problems which has been quite a few years since I have what ever they would do would relieve the pain. To me there are 2 types of Chiroprators those that make you keep coming back so they can keep charging your insurance and make more money and those that are actually smart enough to know what is actually wrong and fix it right away. It has been 8 years since I went to one and the one I went to also had a medical degree and could perscribe drugs. I actually only had to go 2 times to him. Since then I have been in great shape but I contribute a lot to very frequent exercising.

I just hope you can get better quickly so you can go.

Thank you all for your concern! After my appointment in the morning, if I don't get the results I am looking for, I may call a friend of ours that is a chiropractor. I will more than likely be given a treatment of ultrasound and traction tomorrow.

What I can't figure out is the facial/mouth pain/tugging and I can't find anything on the net about it.

Dear Sea Island Lady

I know how back and neck problems can be! I've done both Chriopractic care and more traditional orthopedic on my lower back and started care for my upper neck and shoulders in the last year, all with good results.

The face and tooth pain/numbness is likely either "referred pain" or a compressed nevre. Refered pain is when you injury one part of the body and the pain appears somewhere else. Tooth pain is often the sign of a bad tension headache or neck injury, I've had the happen before. A compressed (aka pinched) nerve happens when somewhere along it's path a nevre gets squeezed and the brain registers it as pain in the wrong place. A good chiropractor will be able to show you on a diagram which nerves go where, and maybe even take a guess where it's being compressed.

I will say this all really takes time and rest. I've had two severe sessions for my lower back, crying in my car unable to get out it was so bad. With rest (and some spinal manipulation and anti-inflamitory drugs) I've had great sucess, and my understanding is these things will generally pass with time.

I pulled my back once the night before a cruise, so bad I had a friend come over and help me pack my bags and bring them to the bottom of the stairs. I limped on the plane and to the ship, but you know what, the sun and sea was better than any doctor or meds. I can even remember feeling my back slipping into place while lying by the pool in the sun.

My advice: Get the one dollar bills ready, discover the joys of a redcap, drag yourself onto that ship if you have to and let the vacation do the rest. You need bedrest and relaxation, what could be better than a cruise?

Hope you make it to the cruise
Rob

Perhaps way more advice than you were looking for, but to add to what Robsvacation posted, I am a neuromuscular therapist (kind of a highly specialized massage therapist dealing in chronic pain and injury work). I wish I could be there to try and help. Yes, referred pain is very common and very real. In addition to nerves being potentially compressed or entrapped by herniated or ruptured discs, spinal misalignment and so forth, they can also be compressed by muscle tissue. A torn, irritated, or overworked muscle can irritate the nerve in the area sending pain into it's referral zone. A skilled massage therapist who understands Trigger Point therapy can be a complement to the therapies you are already trying by isolating the involved muscles and releasing the trigger points in those areas. For many people in pain, this kind of treatment turns out to be the missing piece of the puzzle.
Good luck!

Sea Island Lady - I sure hope and pray that you're able to get some relief....at least enough to go on the cruise as I also can't think of a better situation for rest and relaxation. My wife and I are also relatively tall....5'8" and 6'2"...and have our share of back problems. Wife gets great relief from her chiropractor. I'm a little more hard headed and don't use the chiropractor but I also don't have the problems she does.

As for marking our luggage. We bought CruiseCritic luggage tags last year for our Oosterdam cruise last year. Since we both travel quite a bit for business we'd planned to take them off and save them for our cruises. Best laid plans didn't work out and we left them on and have found they are unique enough that we've had no problem spotting our luggage. It's also led to some interesting conversations in airports.....a number of folks have actually asked us if we're "cruise critics" and do that for a living! :o
