Believe it or not I have never gone on a cruise and not paid in full upon booking. The cruise I am looking at is around $3600.00 so any idea as to what the deposit is? I need to tell my bank to extend my daily limit when I make the reservation.

Normally the deposit is about $ 250.00 per person ... so $ 500.00 (per cabin) but you have to get a quote from the cruise line you are dealing with. Also, a word to the wise... do not buy your cruise insurance until the final payment is due. Your cruise deposit is usually refundable (minus anything the travel agent may impose) up until final payment is due BUT cruise insurance is non-refundable, so no point in paying for it until final payment. Make sure that you spell this out to the travel agent or cruise line when booking and double- check your statement when they send it to you. Happy Cruising!

For our 7 day cruise, Oct 29, 2011 on the Eurodam was $350 each for the deposit.

And thanks for the great tip. I would never have thought about delaying the insurance.

My 20 day cruise was $1700. Not sure how they figure it all, but to me its just part of the cost of the whole cruise, pay it now or pay it later.

Be careful with the insurance. If you don't buy it (usually within 14 days of your initial deposit) it doesn't cover any pre-existing conditions. And don't buy it from the cruiseline, if the cruiseline goes belly up, you are usually without any insurance. Go to insuremytrip dot com and compare policies before buying any insurance.

This is NOT good advice. If you or any immediate family member back home has a pre-existing condition, you are very likely not to be covered if something happens to you or them and you want to cancel your trip. If you cancel, the insurance company would thoroughly research the medical situation and if the person you are canceling for had a pre-existing condition causing their current situation, you will not be covered for your losses. I found an insurance that covered pre-existing conditions if I bought at the time of final payment, HOWEVER, it did not have as good of a coverage as other plans. It is very important to get educated before you purchase insurance.

You are correct that insurance is not refundable if you cancel your trip. However, it can usually be transferred to another vacation. We always buy our insurance within the timeframe to have pre-existing conditions covered. I can't afford to lose the cost of a vacation for a medical issue.

I tried to do that on my last cruise, and was told I had to purchase the HAL insurance at the time of booking...so that's what I did. Then a flash sale came much lower price, and I changed my booking made my final payment, and ..I did loose a little on the insurance went from 129. on original booking to 98 on the new one

Both HAL and Princess let you pay for insurance at final paymentor before when the cancellation penalties kick in whichever comes first. But I believe the other insurers such as those found at insuremytrip require payment within 14 days to cover pre-existing conditions.

Sorry for duplicate post. It is because it is so slow, I didn't know if the post went or not. Crazy.
