Hi can anyone tell me if there are any coffee making facilities on the Noordam Verandah Staterooms (VD category)? Thanks.

No coffee makers in any cabin.

But you can order coffee from room service or get it from the Lido 24/7.

Some have reported bringing their own French Press and coffee and ordering pots of hot water from room service to brew their own.

Others bring Starbucks "Via" singles.

sorry -- there are no coffee making machines on any hal ship in any category

they are considered a fire hazzard by hal

besides the 24/7 coffee available in the lido or by room service -- you can buy special coffees in the explorations cafe -- hours are 7 am - 10 pm

I've only seen in-cabin coffee makers on the upscale luxury cruise lines and even then only in the very upper suites. A Kuerig would be nice but then again room service works pretty darn well. :)

i think NCL has them in the cabins -- and i don't consider that cruise line upscale -- JMO

KK hit it right on the head ................fire at sea is the biggest fear of a sailor and no fun .........and too many [ fortunately generally controled quickly ] begin in cabins due smoking [ this is not a smoking thread so dont go there ], candles, electric overload or careless use , etc

On one of our cruises, there was a small fire in a cabin down the hall, after someone left a laptop plugged in.

Electrical fires are common, the primary reason there are no coffee makers.

That's interesting. Funny they should when comparable lines don't. Actually never consider NCL so I wasn't aware of their emenities.

That doesn't quiet make sense. ;) Are coffee makers more prone to catch fire that laptops or hair driers or cameras being charged? :D

never on HAL ships as the coffee was pretty good from room service. The last 2 cruises it wasn't very good so we bought some Starbucks Via instant and order hot water. Works quite well.

NCL used to have some kind of coffee maker in all cabins. When we were on the Sun in 2006 for Panama Canal we were in an oceanview and our coffee maker was actually just for heating hot water to add to instant coffee, which was provided daily.
However, as of January of last year coffee makers on NCL were removed from inside cabins and oceanview cabins and are now only in Balcony and above categories. It was one of their cost-cutting measures since even the instant coffee that was provided cost money.
Obviously on NCL they aren't considered as fire hazards since, as someone else pointed out, laptops and hair curlers could also be one.

It doesn't make sense that a device that is designed to heat water to 150F might be more prone to catch something on fire than a laptop or a camera charger?

I has to do with people leaving in on and the heating element over heating. Not all coffee makers have auto shut offs. A friend of ours left theirs on at home and came back to see their kitchen counter smoldering. We always unplug ours when we leave the house.

Just my thought - But think of the extra work for the room steward. Cleaning up the coffee maker - restocking the coffee (regular? decaf?) - sugar - sugar substitutes - creamer (plain? flavored?) ... and washing the cups. Multiply this times the number of cabins a steward has ... you get the idea. So easy to use Room Service or run to the Lido (or Neptune L) ... and that seems so much "classier" to me. I don't make my bed on a cruise ... why should I make my coffee? ;)

I wonder how hot curling irons get?

If you like stronger coffee (I don't like HAL's at all), you can order 1/2 coffee, 1/2 espresso. I did that last time when I had to get up early for the Panama Canal and it worked pretty well. I'll have to check out Starbuck's Via. When I don't have access to Neptune, I usually bring European instant and stir it into already existing coffee.

Those NCL Ships with coffeemakers were designed and built by Star Cruises.

Most cruise ships do not have coffee makers in cabins because it is too expensive to install electrical systems that are powerful enough to handle high wattage machines like coffee makers.

At Star Cruises, the mostly Chinese passengers all insist on having water boilers in their cabins to make tea. Star Cruises designed the ships with that in mind. When the ships were given to NCL instead, they took advantage of the beefed-up electrical systems that would allow them to safely install coffee makers instead.

Considering all that, it is still safer to NOT allow any machines that draw high wattage and produce heat when you are dealing with high numbers of people who left their brains at home when they went on vacation.
