That fee does seem way too high to me. They're gouging the taxi operators, IMO.

That is really too bad, especially for those who cannot walk. For those who can, it's a lovely walk into Victoria from the pier. So many fun things to see along the way.

Oh no! We're visiting in May and I had planned on walking to Fisherman's Wharf and Inner Harbour, but we're there from 6:00pm to Midnight and I was thinking that if it's dark, we may take a taxi back, as I'm not sure how secure I feel with just me and the kids walking after dark. Can someone tell me about how long the walk takes and what the area is like after dark?

We were in Victoria also from 6 PM to midnight both last year and the year before at the end of our Alaska cruises. Last year, we walked back from town at 10:30 PM and found it to be well lit and safe. The year before, went walked back about an hour earlier.
The walk is beautiful even in the evning, where many of the homes were landscaped with flowers. From downtown, about half the walk is by hotel and apartment buildings until you arrive at Montreal Street. Then it's about seven short city blocks to the entrance of the port. From the Empress Hotel, it takes us about 15-20 minutes to walk back to the port.

We just got off the Zaandam today and were surprised by the line up for taxis. We had been away for two weeks and hadn't heard about the boycott. Taxis picking up passengers were few and far between. We ended up calling a cab and we were picked up within minutes. We heard thru a hotel shuttle driver that sometimes even when a taxi is called, they won't show.

I heard that the fee they are charging is $200/year which sounds pretty high however when you figure there are 210 cruise ships docking in Victoria this season, it's less than $1.00/ship.
If the port authority (or who ever it is that sets this fee) were to roll back the fee for the taxis, they would also have to make adjustments to the fees for all the tour buses and other tour operators too.

Well I was just in Victoria may 6th & there are shuttles to downtown right at the cruise terminal lined up! CVS branded or cruise victoria branded! Its $7.50 per person! That was a great deal to get you to downtown & operate till the ship leaves! Hope this helps
