Awfully sad, and very rare, accident during a medevac.

We had to do a ship to ship transfer from Costa Victoria a few days ago at Cape Verde. The cruise was diverted to Mindelo due to a German lady requiring urgent surgery - she had been in the ship's hospital for a couple days but then deteriorated, it had been hoped that she could stay with us til Tenerife but that was another day or so's sailing, the decision was made to divert in the early morning (6am) in the dark and not exactly ideal transfer conditions as it was very choppy. However, the lady was successfully transferred from Victoria to the pilot boat and taken ashore for surgery. Her husband went too and we got word later that night to say that she was doing well after the surgery and would be repatriated by air as soon as she had recovered enough to do so.

Illness and accidents aboard cruise ships are incredibly common and ship to ship transfers are done every day, the crews are extremely well trained, so this accident will have badly affected those involved in the transfer from Ocean Countess very badly. Investigations will, of course, be done and any training issues dealt with for future operations like this. This is a very rare occurrence and one where many lessons will be learnt by all involved.

Sympathies to the lady's family & friends.

A tragic accident, which is heartbreaking for the family. It must be so awful for her husband, who watched the whole event.
My thoughts and prayers-
Jo.
