Dear Mr. Card -

Thank you so much for all your beautiful paintings of Ocean Liners - past & present.

Living here in NYC I had the pleasure of sailing on many of your subjects ...they add so much to my memories of wonderful days at sea!

Come to New York & we'll have a toast to you & all the beautiful liners!

I'll assume that because this is a public forum, the messages are here for all of us to read. Can someone help me understand this one? Susan.

Stephen Card painted all of those HAL ship paintings that you find on the stairwells of some of HAL ships. I have always admired those paintings and actually take photos of them when I am on board so that I can view them over and over again. Does anyone know if Mr. Card sells prints of his HAL work? We would be interested in acquiring a few if we could find them for sale.

I have visited the web site you posted in the past which really peaked my interest in his work. Unfortunately, I have been unable to find any retailer that sells his prints (if he even releases prints.)

There is a thread about the current world cruise aboard the Prinsemdam & Mr Card mentioned that he is putting a book together that will be out in the near future...perhaps he can give us some detail.....

Here's the link

We were on an inagural trip of the new Statendam in 1993 and all recieved a
copy of his painting, also had the privilage of having Stephen sign it. It sits
above my desk in my office and I see it every day and think about him and
HAL. Have not seen this done since. Looking forward to his book and will be
3rd in line.

I have one of Stephen Card's signed prints in my office, too, and never a day goes by that someone doesn't comment about it. It's an honor to own it!!

He was just here in December and in fact during his stay he launched his new book "Cunarder". The book launch was at the annual holiday party of the Steamship Historical Society of America Long Island Chapter, which despite its name covers all of the NY metro area and has members from around the world.

I would strongly recommend that ship enthusiasts in the NY area join this organisation as well as the World Ship Society Port of New York Branch (http://www.worldshipny.com) (there is some overlap between the two but there are also many events unique to each). I am now a member of both, it took some prodding from Stephen and others but it's worth it!

I too am looking forward to the new HAL book - "Cunarder" is also magnificent for the Cunard fans out there. (On the maritime books thread that is currently active here, I posted a description - it is mainly a book of paintings of Cunard ships, but has a lot of text too.)

Stephen -

That is a wonderful story about the start of your painting career....

Oh Bermuda --my favorite isle in the world!!!!!! G-d blessed the planet with that bit of heaven......

I've lost count of the # of times I have visited there...my first time onboard Rotterdam V in 1978. I also visited the week of my 30th birtday - I spent the last days of my twenties there & sailed out of Hamilton harbor just hours before I turned 30!(onboard the Homeric).

Wonderful wonderful memories(except when I rolled down the staircase head over heals in the Ritz Carlton room while I was dancing with a women in a long ball gown - the ship went one way - we went the other. Nothing a few drinks didn't cure inthe Ocean Bar(another favorite bar ).

Oh to walk on that pink sand & swim in that water.......

John

PS I was also on the Rotterdam V when John Maxtone Graham married his wife Mary back in 1981....they had the boothe next to iur table in the dining room.

Stephen...we also have one of your prints of the Rotterdam V which was signed by you and have it hanging in our hallway. I believe we were given this on our 50-day So.America cruise in '96 while aboard the Grande Dame.

Last time we spoke while visiting Sydney on the 2001 WC you mentioned to me that I had asked you for a dance at a Black & White Ball...this I don't remember but it must have also been on Rotterdam V?? We sailed with you quite a few times on that ship when Debbie and her Mom were onboard.

Take care and we would also love to see a HAL ship sailing on the Bermuda run again like the old Statendam used to do. I think we did that sailing about 20-times during the 70's and early 80's.

Stephen,

As someone who sailed Sea Venture many times, you brought back wonderful memories of Capt. Hauge, Gino and Lorenzo.

I always wondered whether you've ever done a Sea Venture painting. I always wanted one of Sea Venture sailing from Hamilton on the Xmas cruise in 1975. Archie Brown was aboard and his son sailed next to us as we left the harbor in what (I think) was a red sailboat.

We always spend time aboard HAL ships looking at the details in your work and love them.

Following seas sailor!

Greetings everyone!

Doug was kind enough to alert me yesterday that this new thread has been started. Feeling a little more than slightly embarassed!!!! :o

Thanks for all your kind comments. Much appreciated.

First things first.... 'Mr' Card was my father. I'm just plain Stephen.

I must also apologise if this first posting is short. It is 11.32 pm here in Sydney. The alarm is set for 4 am so that Ruth and I can get to the airport for a 7 am flight.

We are off to Auckland to join the SAGA ROSE for a cruise to several NZ ports then more in Australia. We disembark in Fremantle on 20th and will be back in Sydney on the 21st. At that time I hope we can take start talking about all the topics mentioned above. I look forward to that.

Anyhow, one back on line we can discuss Bermuda, SEA VENTURE.... aka PACIFIC PRINCESS, ROTTERDAM V and the pitfalls of staying up too late in the Ocean Bar. BTW... I had the last drink in the Ocean Bar on the last night of her last cruise for HAL. I got the bar tender to sign and stamp the bar chit that it was the last drink ever to be served there... under HAL.

Best wishes for now......

Stephen

Stephen -

My all time favorite - Rotterdam V Ocean Bar - in the afternoons in a chair by the windows in the evening at the bar! Then off to the Ritz Carlton Room(where I fell head over heels down the curved staircase while pretending to be Fred Astaire with Ginger).

You mentioned working on the Franconia - my parents sailed on her 31 October 1969 - Bon Voyage party was in a double height room - great fun - they hit hurricanes going & coming but had a ball!!!!! Wonderful ship.

I sailed on Sitmar Fairsea & Fairwind........

I hope you are having a wonderful voyage.....

That bar receipt is priceless..is there a painting of it????

Hopefully you FRAMED that receipt for that LAST DRINK for a keepsake??? The Bermuda you folks are talking about sounds like when everyone work the Pink, Yellow or Pale Blue striped sport jackets and everything was a little less casual but ELEGANT. I bet there's a lot of blue jeans, flip flops and tennis shoes over there now a days!!

This sounds good!

I'm planning a long(ish) cruise for January to April in SAGA ROSE & SAGA RUBY next year so those months are out. For the rest, please let me know what ships and months you are thinking. It would be fun to be with a crowd who know how to enjoy HAL.

Stephen--

We're planning a group cruise aboard Westerdam Oct 29-Nov 4, 2006. Among other things, we're planning a Bon Voyage party in Fort Lauderdale the evening of the 28th, a Cabana party on HMC, and a Grand Masquerade Ball on Halloween Night...

As of this posting, we have over 40 CC members confirming interest for this Eastern Caribbean itinerary - so you'd have a built-in audience of HAL afficionados who would love to have you!

If you'd like more info - please feel free to send me an e-mail:
bep_sf@yahoo.com (bep_sf@yahoo.com)

Cheers!

Brian,

Now the 28th just happens to be my birthday and I'm wondering if this cruise is something I should jump at or perhaps something I should run a mile from!!!!!

The time of year is right for sure. I think I will mark it up as definite possible.

Many thanks!!!!!

Even if you're not there, we'll definately raise a glass of bubbly in your honor - another excuse to have a celebration the night before sailing!:D

...but I'm certain that there will be some new artwork that will require you to supervise installation on Westerdam that week??? ;)

Stephen...

I wouldn't promise any paintings being completed on that Halloween cruise....tho Brian & I did not meet last month when we were both on the MSC Opera --its been well documented - he is a major party animal.

Any new art we acn look forward to???/ When is that book due out?

Stephen,

Welcome back home! Was thinking of you in that wonderful North Cape Lounge.

Loved hearing about your Ocean Bar tab. Recently spoke with someone who was aboard the old Rotterdam. It seems asbestos may foul plans to turn her into a hotel.

We have a copy of your painting of her in our bedroom.

Would love to hear your comments on Sea Venture. Used to play Hauge and his staff captains in tennis. Instead of drinks, wished I would have played him for some memorabilia.
