We did this cruise last Sept. HAL does not offer tours on that island. It will be a tender port and if you wife can manage the tender, there will be a number of private 10-12 passenger vans lined up at the dock untill about 2 1/2 hours before departure offerring 2 hour tours of the island...basicly a drive around the island with a short stop at one of the beaches for pictures (you don't have to get out if you don't want to). We took one of the tours after walking into town for some shopping. It was nice and not very expensive..about $10 pp person. You don't need to rush off since they run continuously.
There was a snorkel tour that some signed up for on the Roll Call for that cruise..I can't remember if they actually did the boat trip as it rained off and on all day and the water was a bit rough.
That is also a port that the ship has to pass on if the wind conditions are bad because of the need to tender.
Go over to the roll call section and see if there is any thing happening with you cruise..or check out some of the other SP roll calls..there is good info on that board.
Also if you are interested you can check out our blog of the cruise...a daily report with pictures of the cruise.

We went to the cooks for our honeymoon and I can't wait to get back there. Not sure how much time you have in port but look into doing the Rarotonga safari tour if you can, they take you into the interior and up to an amazing lookout.
Another option is to hire a scooter or a car and ride around the island, it only takes about 40 mins. There is also the public bus that costs a couple of dollars and will pull up wherever you want to stop. If you are wanting to do some snorkeling ask for directions to Fruits of Rarotonga as it has great snorkeling. There is also a lagoon tour near muri beach, I thinkit is called captain tuma or something like that
Hope that helps, you will love the cooks

We enjoyed this lagoon tour and neither of us are snorkelers. The rate was very reasonable, about $55.00 per person.

We were just there on the World Cruise at the end of January. While HAL did not offer any tours, the locals had buses/vans for those that wanted to see the island. Once they filled up the van/bus they took off and the ones who went seemed to enjoy the trip.
We decided to go to the Catholic Cathedral for Mass as it was Sunday. this turned out to be a wonderful experience. The church was full, and the native choir was quite interesting. Their version of the service had some local customs in it and that just added to the experience.
A friend of ours did the same thing with a Protestant church, cant remember the denomination as it was not theirs, but they loved it as well.
You will find the locals very friendly.
