View Full Version : Cruise will probably be cancelled

So that I don't have to explain again, you can get details from the following thread where I posted about my problem earlier:
http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=139816&page=2&pp=25 (http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=139816&page=2&pp=25)
I am in so much pain, that I have even considered going to a chiropractic doctor. No pain meds or muscle relaxers are working and they make me feel "out there" in another zone. I have so much to do that I don't think I can get it all together anyway.
UPDATE: The orthopedics office finally called me back and I have an appointment at 9:00 am tomorrow. I just don't see what they can do to make me feel better enough to leave on Thursday. :(
We do have insurance, so that's no problem. The problem is my parents and their friends. I hope my parents will go on without us since their friends will be going, but I will worry about them.
I can't believe this is happening!

I am in so much pain, that I have even considered going to a chiropractic doctor.
Make an appointment with a Chiropractor first thing, see if they can get you in right away. I never visited a Chiropractor until 2 years ago and it is amazing the difference it can make, not just in your back pain but in your overall health. Call right away, I don't think you'll be sorry. Sometimes the relief can be almost instant.
I'm sorry you're in so much pain, hopefully you'll find relief soon.

I feel your pain ... in December I was within 7 days of our cruise and due to a pending medical issue did not know whether or not I would be able to travel......not a good feeling even when you know that you have cruise insurance
Hope you get pain relief SOON whether or not you are able to cruise.

I'm very sorry for your pain and discomfort and certainly sorry you may have to miss your cruise.
Of course, your good health is paramount. I hope you receive excellent care and make a full and complete recovery .....very quickly.
Good luck.

Thank you all for your concern! After my appointment in the morning, if I don't get the results I am looking for, I may call a friend of ours that is a chiropractor. I will more than likely be given a treatment of ultrasound and traction tomorrow.
What I can't figure out is the facial/mouth pain/tugging and I can't find anything on the net about it.

Do you think you might be grinding your teeth or have TMJ? This could explain the tightness in your jaw. Good luck at the doctors and hopefully you will have some answers soon.

You are so in my prayers. I certainly hope they can do something for you. I still have my mouth hurting from the tooth I had pulled yesterday, however, it is nothing like you. I told my 13 year old grandson last night about you and he told me to send all my prayers your way and he would send his mine so we would both be taken care of. He is such a love. Keep us posted, Sweetie.:(

What I can't figure out is the facial/mouth pain/tugging and I can't find anything on the net about it. Search for Bell's Palsy and see if that describes your facial condition.
I also recommend you visit your chiropractor friend. We have a guy at work who visited orthopod after orthopod for years with a bad neck. All they did was drug him up to relieve the pain. He finally visited a chiro who was a cervical specialist, and had relief before he got out of the office! It's certainly worth a try. Good luck.

I really don't think we should be throwing different diseases out as possible causes of Sea Island Lady's medical problems. It will do nothing but further stress her out while waiting for medical diagnosis/treatment by qualified doctors. This may be nothing serious at all and could have a simple benign cause like jaw-grinding, or something similar caused by stress, so why look at worse case scenarios when we are neither qualified nor fully informed on her problems.
To begin with Bell's Palsy is nothing like she describes her symptoms, my reason for saying let's not throw names of diseases around. I've had BP- it is paralysis of the facial muscles, not pain, which is what her complaint is. Why even bring it up to her?

I hope Sea Island Lady gets home soon - We all are awaiting her report.
JaniceB
February 23rd, 2005, 12:15 PM
Bookworm is correct saying BP is facial paralysis. I had it once, also. I worked in a dental office for many years and the facial pain/tugging described sounds more like TMJ or grinding. If you injure your neck, it is amazing where the pain may radiate. I got pain in my shoulders, which I had injured previously. I had no idea my neck was the cause of the pain. My guess is that she has been clenching her teeth in pain and now these muscles are revolting, so to speak. I hope the doctor has some good news for her so that she can enjoy her long awaited trip.

Thank you and cross your fingers I can't go into to detail now, because I am not suppose to be using the computer for neck reasons.
Long story short...Went to Ortho. and he really didn't find anything and gave me a cortisone shot and a neck brace (that thing didn't last too long). Started getting dizzy and nauseous this afternoon. Lots of discomfort and pain. Called primary physician and he could see me until tomorrow. My Mom said to take a Meclizine as she does when she has inner ear trouble. I did and it worked! I did talk to primary and asked if I could use a chiro. He said to go ahead.
I called our friend and he arranged to see me both tonight and tomorrow, even though he was off. My DH and I got back about 1 /12 hours ago. What an experience! I am not cured, but a little better. He told me how to manage the pain and that he would see me back in the morning. he said it would take some time to be 100%.
We are still going to try to make the cruise and will leave tomorrow afternoon. Cross your fingers and keep those prayers coming. I will probably not check back here. :)

I sure hope you are ready to get on the ship. Those little pills do wonders. I use to get dizzy and my legs would just go out from under me. No control. What a horrid feelling. My doctor said people are affected differently. Right down to the terrible face and teeth pain. Hopefully that was it and your little pill will do the trick. God Bless and have a fun cruise.:)

Ditto from me, too, Sea Island Lady. I hope you experience some major relief after your second session and are able to make your cruise. Interestingly, the cruise itself will probably do wonders for you. Just make it a relaxing one and don't try to do too much. And, if you start to experience any discomfort while onboard, I hear the spa staff could be of some great help in that area with massages. When I was on the Zuiderdam last August, I was at the spa making an appointment to get my hair styled when a woman brought her husband in. He was obviously in great pain. She talked to the woman at the desk, who got a couple of the massage therapists right out there, who then slowly walked him back to a treatment room. I saw him in the dining room that night, and he seemed to be in much better shape.
I sure hope you are able to make your cruise and then find just the right combination of rest and relaxation to truly make it a therapeutic one.
Blue (and pain-free) skies!

Wow, isn't it amazing that the exact same thing happened last year. I remember that just days before the Family of 14 cruise, you were also stricken with strange symptoms.
It was your teeth, I think, and a goiter??
And you were also thinking you would not be able to go on that one either. But at the last moment, you were OK.
Life is strange.
I would think twice before booking another.

I really, really hate to be cynical...seriously it's not my nature. DH accuses me of giving people way too much credit. But from the beginning this all just seemed odd to me. Reading the other thread and reading what SIL has written this time is almost scarey. The likenesses are overwhelming.
The reason I've been skeptical all along, and therefore really didn't post sympathetically, is that if I were as ill as described I just don't think I'd be inclined to sit at my keyboard writing to all of you guys. I mean I love you all, but we're talking symptoms of ultimate proportons!
Still, I'm willing to give this person the benefit of the doubt. It could just be a huge coincidence that two such terribly odd ailments that involved massive testing and (thankfully) ended up amounting to nothing both happened just before a cruise. As Lisa says, stress could be the guiding force. Stress can do terrible things to all of us and actually make us physically ill.
Happily and obviously she was completely cured and is now enjoying herself on the high seas. Godspeed, Sea Island Lady.

Celtic, you give me way too much credit. I have to admit my tongue is pressed ever so slightly into my cheek:rolleyes: .
Just to clear things up a little bit, I had heard that these 2 posters were one in the same some time back. Frankly, it didn't matter to me that much so of course I didn't post anything about it.
But then Celtic posted about a similar illness for the same person last year and EKerr found the thread. The fact is that I've been told not to post personal information (other than about cruising) on these boards and I've done my best to refrain.
Yet SIL has been posting massive amounts of personal information and soliciting sympathy which she has received from many very well meaning people. So now either she does have some very real problems or we are all participating in someone's very offbeat sense of humor.
But no matter what it is ... it's very strange.

I am posting from the SD Marriott Gaslamp and will board tomorrow. I had a pretty good day today and the plane ride went remarkably well. Yesterday was not so good and I thought I would have to cancel last night in Atlanta.

Two words...
Munchausen syndrome
Could be brought on from family's sudden focus on the impending vacation and lack of attention to SIL??
It is a very real syndrome where sufferers make themselves sick to gain attention. Munchausen by proxy is when they harm others (usually their children) to gain attention and sympathy.

Although I have no doubt that there have been individuals who have felt the need to develop an alternative ID to respond to themselves and thereby self-validate an unpopular opinion, there are also sometimes when a person may forget or lose their password(s) after changing computers and find it simpler to develop a new ID.
Much as I dislike being duped, there is no assurance that this is the case here. Neither do I believe that any of us here are qualified to diagnose anyone's physical or mental afflictions via a bulletin board on the internet.
I enjoy the company and camaraderie of all those here (Okay, there are a couple of xyz-super exceptions... ;) ) and unless someone has been physically or financially harmed or otherwise abused, I can condemn no one.
Fair sailing, SIL - Whomever and wherever you are...

Glad y'all are enjoying this thread at my expense! :(
It's is no secret that I am FO14 (a name for our planned family reunion last summer, changed after that reunion was over).
Yes, I did have problems before the cruise last year. My DH pointed out that stress may play a roll, but this latest is a doozy that I am still suffering from.
I am posting from the SD Marriott Gaslamp and will board tomorrow. I had a pretty good day today and the plane ride went remarkably well. Yesterday was not so good and I thought I would have to cancel last night in Atlanta.
I will explain later if I decide to come back to this board.
Very dizzy now, so need to get off now.
You know what??? Why didn't you just tell us? Honesty is always the best policy! Please, don't shift the responsibility back to this board!!!!
I for one, am glad you've been exposed! We have endured your "newbie" questions and have tried to be positive... "HELLO" - I think you've been on enough cruises to know you can move the lounge chairs!
I'm sorry, but I have little sympathy for you - you played us & I don't like it.
Maybe you can do us a favor & don't bother with any explanations... hope you have a good cruise.

Hi all,
Stumbled upon your "soap opera" here this afternoon and have enjoyed the entertainment.
In researching some of the older posts, I came upon this one.
http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=136858
Has she mentioned this since? Just seems odd that someone can decide to take a weeks vacation at the drop of a hat (10 days give or take a few). Plus, being able to book the cabin right next door, etc. Just odd.
If the health issues are real, I wish her well.
Good night,
Leigh

I can't believe I am getting involved in this, but here goes...there are sometimes perfectly valid reasons to have 2 user id's. For example, in the late summer of 2003, I was planning a suprise birthday cruise for my husband. He & I both have user id's & both peruse these boards. I couldn't post questions about the ports we'd be visiting or the ship, etc. with my usual ID because he would notice & the suprise would be spoiled. I created a 2nd ID & used it just for that purpose. I don't even remember what it was now...
I also recall that the poster "family of 14" did a similar thing, not as a suprise, but for a particular purpose. I'm not good at the link inserting thing, but I will try to link the thread from the RCCL forum where she explained. Perhaps some of you will be able to rest now. Look at post # 20 on this thread. FYI, I do not personally know this person, or anyone on the boards...

Debbie -
I understand... but why not just say "this exact same thing happened to me last year before our cruise, I can't believe it's happening again..." or something along those lines.
Never any mention that all this drama "happened" previously too. :)
At any rate, I think I'm done with this whole thing now. I hope they have fun in spite of SIL's medical problems.

This is all making me very weary indeed, but good things come from bad and it did afford me the fun opportunity of talking to the real live voice of EKerr! Laura, such fun talking last night ... can't believe it was 2 hours!!!! Whew! By email I will tell you DH's amusing take on all this;)
Laura is right. Not referring back to almost an almost identical and coincidental occurence of a mysterious illness last year just before SIL's cruise is a huge omission (IMHO).
No matter how you look at it, SIL has been a woman who requires an enormous amount of TLC. For someone who has cruised as often as she has to have so many finite questions only to follow it up with every single solitary minute symptom of her illness is (if nothing else) strange.
So you all can play her game, if you want. And some may flame me for not being sympathetic. But anyone who has come onto these boards and told us every minute detail of her life deserves a direct response. This is mine and I am done.
As for her post yesterday ... I'd be dizzy, too:) .

I don't know what is bothering SI Lady, but there is one indisputable fact: the nerve(s) that provides the ability to move the facial muscles and to feel pain is a cranial nerve that comes directly off the brain and through a small opening in the base of the skull. There is no way that chiropractic manipulation of the spine can correct any problem with that---except maybe the power of suggestion. Her symptoms are disconnected, to say the least.

Sail, thank you for noticing and I think it's wonderful, too. I wish I knew the origin of the quote and I very much wish it were one of mine! I received it from a much older friend of mine (by snail mail;) ) along with a group of many other sayings. This one stood out from the others. I thought it was particularly good for these boards in general, though perhaps particularly so in light of some more recent postings.
I'm as guilty as the next person for posting before I think from time to time ... however, I've given considerable thought to my posts on this particular thread and quite honestly, I regret none of them.

I'm a member of several online communities, and attention-getting behavior like this is not at all uncommon. It's referred to as "trolling". Some folks will troll a subject known to be a hot button for many just to get a response (on this board, I guess that would be smuggling liquor onboard or the dining room dress code) or....even better...start a total meltdown and sit back to enjoy the show until the mods shut it down. (this is usually after someone starts screaming in all caps "Don't feed the trolls for christssake!") Sometimes it's for the attention alone. Recently it was a poster on an equestrian board that claimed to need help getting her horses out of harms way during one of the hurricanes. After galvanizing half the Florida equestrian community to come to her aid, it became clear the situation was non-existent. The saddest case I've seen was on the Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma board.
Multiple log-on names are also not uncommon, and on one equestrian board I frequent the alternate names (called "alters") are fairly amusing and blatant. They are usually used when one wants to make a snarkey comment, but is well-known enough that posting it would create a stir. So you have your "alter" say it for you - and no one knows just what a suspicious witch you really are. It's very much a joke. There's "Alter-able" "Leather Alter" and Turn-out Alter to name a few (the last two are plays on the word "halter"). I've been known to click on a thread I wouldn't normally read, just because I notice the last poster had "alter" in the name, so I'm fairly certain it's going to be amusing or inflammatory. I really like it when one of the regular posters accidentally "outs" their alter. Whoops! Lots of blushing emoticons are used then.
To be honest, the only reason I clicked on this thread was because I could not imagine how the subject got to four pages. Now I know!

Ziggy, it's sad to me because we have two of these situations right now. One is a bigger disappointment than the other. I never knew SIL, never got involved in her questions or medical problems because I just couldn't believe that someone would ask questions about rearranging deck chairs by the pool (she must have really gotten a laugh out of that one) or go into such huge detail about her medical condition. Anyone in that much pain isn't going to sit at a keyboard tapping it out for utter strangers.
But the saddest is Vicar. Because many of us enjoyed him so much and rejoiced for his happiness when he became "engaged" last year. We jokingly planned a road trip to pick everyone up and head for Boston to hop on the Maasdam for his wedding and honeymoon. Sure it was all in good fun, but for most of us none of it was based on a lie. I am just plain sad about it. Vicar is banned from the boards, I understand, but he'll undoubtedly return with another name and I only hope he's recognizable so I can utilize my seldom used "ignore" feature.

I have been reading this thread and it is very interesting. There are many reasons why people would uses different identities and when they are kept secret none of us who are kept in the dark feel good about it.
I don't know if anyone has checked out Vicar's profile or not. I just did. I have never looked at it before. I wonder if he changed it or if it has always been this way. Under the listing for interests, Vicar has listed "telling lies". I'm not kidding. Check it out for yourselves.

Linda and Heather-I did look-up Vicar's profile. And it does say 'telling lies'. And a jolt went through me when I read it because his posts seemed genuine. I must have missed something. Pat-
I think the "telling lies" was added to Vicar's profile by his wife, AFTER she discovered he was mis-representing himself on this board. He claimed to have just gotten engaged to a 29-yr. old fiancee - and last week his wife caught him posting these lies. She then joined "briefly" as Mrs. Vicar and proceeded to expose him. Both have since been banned from the site.
I should been alerted by the fact that he frequently mis-spelled fiancee as "finance" or "fiance"... most men would be corrected immediately by a real fiancee. :D

I do not have any "insider" information and I am just as clueless as everyone else. We just have to trust the moderators of the board and move on. I really dislike being duped, we all do. It does happen, though.
It doesn't do any of us any good to let one person spoil our fun. Let's move on. The world is full of wonderful people who will share their honest experiences and selves.

I think EKerr is right that "telling lies" was added. I'm quite sure that wasn't there before.
EKerr, you capsulized what happened very nicely. There is no way to ever describe in detail all that happened on that day (Friday, I think). All I know is a very upbeat, fun day on the CC boards suddenly was taken downhill faster than a roller coaster ride. Sadly it all played out to be true even though we hoped so hard that Vicar was playing a cruel joke.
So it's done, but the lesson is learned for me. When a person starts to talk just a bit too much about their personal lives the chances are a lot of it could be in the fantasy of their minds ... for whatever reason.
While I'm sympathetic about anyone's need to "get away from it all" and perhaps create another life for themselves, I'd rather it not be at my expense. This was in a way because for me it was much like losing a good and joyful friend.

Funny thing, I had suspicions about the poster after reading "...almost in tears. I'm in so much pain and then going into great detail about symptoms etc. to total strangers.
I've been in tears with pain (finally corrected by two lots of surgery) and no way could I have spelled it out (or wanted to) on a message board.

SIL is on a cruise and we're not talking about her anyway. By the time she returns, I'm sure the thread will be way down the boards.
But one thing led to another and as threads tend to do, it veered off. We're talking abut the issue of posters on the board who are not who they say they are. SIL is who she said she was ... it's just that it appears she may have been a bit more than that.
