Saw this comment on another thread, and wondered what the "rules" are regarding toddlers in the pool...."I saw 3 toddlers wearing swimmers in the pool. I thought that was a no-no."

Thanks in advance for the comments...

I'm also curious about the diaper rules in pools on HAL. Do they allow elderly adults in the pool with diapers?

February 23rd, 2005, 01:35 PM
It is a big "no-no" - though many with small kids will disagree and actually allow their kids in the pool with swim diapers and even regular diapers.

It's no wonder we have Norwalk outbreaks on cruise ships!

It's big NO-NO and probably one of the reasons that HAL has closed all the kiddie's wading pools on the ships that had them.

Amy - I would hope that seniors that do have to wear "Depends" would have more sense than to go in the pool.

No they don't. It is clearly posted - "no diapers or swim diapers in the pool"

Are you talking about the aids for swimming (I call them floaties) or the new diapers made for swimming?

I think it is in reference to the new diapers made for swimming...

This issue has been discussed numerous times on these boards and soon we'll see the posts from the parents who say they don't care, they are going to do it anyway... they don't care if they ruin the cruise for everyone else - their kids are special. Oh, and that they've paid good money for the cruise, so if their kids want to swim, they will.

I'm all for everyone's personal safety and health while onboard. Let's keep those adult and toddler diapers out of the pool - and the cigarette smoke off the ship! Norfolk is dangerous - as is second hand smoke! Yuck! I took our infant on a cruise when she was 9 months old. She was excited to get in her swimsuit like the rest of us - but, she only stuck her feet in the pool for about 5 minutes and was never submerged. She's still not a water lover, although now she's potty trained and perhaps this cruise we'll enjoy the pool more!

Amy - I would hope that seniors that do have to wear "Depends" would have more sense than to go in the pool.Actually it is a lot easer to get INTO the pool with Depends than to get out again. Those things get really heavy when they are soaked! As Jeff Foxworthy (You might be a redneck ...) observed, when the diaper package says "8 to 12 pounds", that's about all they will hold.:D

On the Veendam a couple of weeks ago a Mom had her little girl in the pool in a diaper. The staff just ignored it. We already had Norwalk on board. I reported it to one staff member and they told me I would have to find a "pool" staff member. I gave up. Didn't get in the pool again.

I couldn't help myself! I've never cruised HAL before and someone recently off ship just mentioned that 75% of the pax on board were about 80 years old! With this type of passenger age ratio, I would think the elderly diapers would be more common then toddlers! :D

Yes, I know it will never happen. There will be diapers in the pools, so I avoid the pools. People will violate the dress codes, I avert my eyes. Etc, etc. Nobody gets to spoil my hard-earned vacation.

Westerdam - January

The in-cabin directory said that children under a certain age were not allowed in the aft pool. BUT the sign by the pool said that children under a certain age must be accompanied by an adult. And the sign read - no diapers.

We saw parents take their diapered children into the aft pool - and no one stopped them (and no one said anything to them). As a result DH stopped using the pool when he saw this.

Add to that list people who smoke in undesignated places  and for those whose weight has bypassed the comfortable limit of a two piece bathing suit - or in some cases, exposing skin at all  Oh! and fashion faux pas #1, those wearing a fanny pack! I don't either. Why not start a smoking thread?

We took our then 9 month old on the Dawn and had a great time. They say no diapers in the kiddie pool, but when they're under 1, they don't stay in there very long anyway....we took our daughter in with swim diapers on and no one said anything and there were several other kids, too. Like I said, at 9 months, she lasted a whopping 10 minutes in the pool!

That is 10 minutes too long for me !!!

Re people/kids wearing swim diapers/Depends in pools - Is there any wonder why Norovirus happens on ships?????? Once again, the ugly attitude of "I paid my money and I can do whatever I want" rears its head......Its a real shame that some people have absolutely NO consideration for anyone but themselves.

And Doone, I agree. This topic was supposed to be about children or adults wearing diapers in pools-not smoking. However, I am surprised that the poster who made more than one anti-smoking reference in his/her post, cannot see the obvious public health threat posed by adults or children-wearing diapers/swimdiapers- in public pools.

The subject of the thread is KIDS IN THE POOL; nothing about adults, until someone changed the topic. That particular poster is always trying to justify putting toddlers in diapers in the pools, not just on this thread or on this board, by shifting the conversation to seniors and/or smoking.

I would never go swimming in a) a toilet, or b)a public swimming pool; ever, anywhere. If I want to get wet I take a shower.

I was at the pool at the Reach (KeyWest) once and saw some guy playing in the pool with his 6-month-old who had obviously loaded his pants. I almost threw up.

What good is it complaining after the damage is already done? If chlorine or bromine can even make a dent in e.coli H:O157, it takes hours to be effective.

Maybe this attitude is part of the reason you continue to have so many problems on this board... I've seen some of your posts on other boards slamming the people who post here.

You do condemn and slam smokers, elderly people and anyone else you feel is deserving in your opinion. As my Mom used to say, "If you are going to dish it out, be prepared to take it."

Personally, I wish you'd just stop. If you think HAL is the wrong demographic for you - find a more suitable cruiseline.

Also, as a former Marine, you certainly can't say you haven't been around smokers! ;) If your commanding officer was smoking in your presence, I guarantee you probably just sucked it up politely.

Certainly they are. I'm sure they will enjoy the hors d'ouevres and continental breakfast.

How about your Mother, Brother and his GF? They will be enjoying the Neptune also? I'm sure the concierge will make an exception for them even though they are not in an S.

Peaches, I'm flattered you've taken the time to know me so well and my travel companions. Ekerr, you're just down right nasty. Trust me, I can take it - but rarely dish it. Of course I've been around smokers, but to compare someone in the public to a commanding officer? That's just ridiculous. Smokers are fine - just smoke where you're suppose to. Ekerr, I would continue to sort out the erroneous nature of your deragotory comments against me - but don't you have more paper, I mean pressing issues to attend to? ;)

One thing that appears to be reasonable certain, is that HAL is definately attracting the younger passengers that they seem to be striving for. Guess HAL refers to those demographics as "family cruising". The 'Kids in the Pool" threads were primarily the domain of Carnival, although I do recall Celebrity having one that got pretty nasty. RCI has their share of the same topic, especially so in the Solarium area... Looks like HAL has joined the club...

Happy cruising.....

Vicar, haven't seen you for awhile, but your post was fantastic:D . Get yourself over to the TP thread ... it's all fun over there and no pins and needles.

Sarcasm can be a very scarey thing. Some people on these boards are masters; others are not. It can either be very, very funny, tediously annoying or viciously nasty.

It is curious how the thread went from kiddies in the pool to smokers and the elderly ... but doesn't it pretty much happen every time? When you can't come up with a good argument for something, divert everyone's attention and maybe they'll forget what everyone was talking about in the first place.;) It's a good tactic in some places, but no way it's gonna work here:) .

I'm feeling a little devilish today ... so here goes.

If we're concerned with health hazards, then let's also put into the mix all who wear perfume/after shave/cologne. Lots of people are highly allergic to these fragrances.

I say let's have a HAL sniff checker at the gangway and turn back anyone who smells other than "au naturalle."

This is a very good point Heather... one often forgotten when posting. Sometimes things that are meant in a completely light hearted way are not read as such... and sometimes vicious sarcasm is intended by some of the posters, unfortunately.

Sarcasm can be a very scarey thing. Some people on these boards are masters; others are not. It can either be very, very funny, tediously annoying or viciously nasty.

The great British writer Dorothy L. Sayers put it well when she had one character say to another (parapharased, as I can't remember which book it's in at the moment!): "Some people can be funny without being rude. Some can be both funny and rude. I suggest you try for one or the other."

The second character first smiles, then looks quizzical,, and then bursts out with an "I've never!" upon realizing that they just been called both humorless and rude.

Sarcasm in writing is always difficult to convey, as I'm only too well aware!
