Hi Scott. We'll be with you. Can't wait. We've been on Seabourn a number of times. We wanted to try something new. It's our first time on SS. Heard good things about SS. The itinerary looks great. Looking forward to meeting you.

Not to echo Cuddles115--an almost peerless soubriquet--we are on verge of taking the SS plunge after several Seabourn cruises. Although caution says never to fly into port of embarkation on the same day, we are pondering flying MIA to BVI on the December 11th. The AA flight arrives on the island at 2:25, and SS says that as long as we alert the ship, they'll take us on board any time before sailaway at 11:00. This avoids a stay in Barbados, which is our preference. But, as more experienced hands, do you think it is a safe bet? And, I would be grateful any tips or advice about SS that first timers would benefit from.

Good evening writer100,

I would suggest flying into Barbardos one day early. I would personally find it less stressful knowing I don't have to worry about flight cancellations, delays etc. We are staying at the Barbados Hilton. It's a lovely hotel on a great beach and reasonably priced for Barbados. This way you can board the Silver Spirit in the early afternoon and enjoy lunch onboard.

Look forward to meeting you at the Hilton or on the ship. You are going to love the service on Silversea.

Bon Voyage!

We are just about to reserve B2B cruises FLL - Barbados - FLL and look forward to seeing everyone on board. We've sailed on the Spirit before and would be happy to answer questions.

My preference is to arrive at least a day before departure so that luggage is assured of being there. We will fly into FLL the day before our departure just to be sure.

Writer 100: We have been assured by our TA, SS and American Airlines that there would be "no problem" in getting to the ship in plenty of time. But, keeping the old saying, "the best laid plans....." in mind, I also am a little concerned on getting in the same day as the sailing. Hopefully, there won't be any hang ups. There's another AA flight from Miami in the evening that gets in before Spirit sailaway. I've also been checking the AA flight from Miami(#1921). It has always left late waitng for transferring passengers.

Sott: Looks like we have a good group of CCers on Board.

No way, no how am I ever going to count on flying in on the day of the cruise again. Did that once and almost missed the cruise and made the ship with about 45 minutes "heart attack" minutes to go. Airlines can say anything they want to, probably with their fingers crossed behind their back, but we got hit first by a weather delay and then by broken equipment on the back-up flight. Our SS cruise out of Barcelona actually starts with the first night actually being a full overnight in Barcelona and we're still going to fly in a day before, partially to sightsee and partially because we just don't want to take the chance.

We just did that flight two weeks ago no problem at all the ship leaves 11:00 . Bad weather is no issue at all unless it snows here in Miami  . They flight goes everyday and never has a problem.

Randy,
The extra one or two days also allows for any late arrival luggage to catch up with you before you cruise. I always have at least one night in port pre-cruise and sometimes two if I want to see the embarkation city some.
In Copenhagen we had a two night pre-cruise and my luggage didn't arrive, and never did until 6 days into the cruise when it caught up with me. Sure am glad it wasn't my wife's luggage that got lost.

Good afternoon Herman the cat.
I have sailed in the Caribbean with Silversea this time of year many times but this will be our first time on the Spirit. It's been on the Shadow and Whisper.

We are looking forward to discovering the new ship. Heard lots of mixed reviews, will be able to judge for myself. I've got around 150 days with Silversea and love the line. It's the staff that make the difference for us.

Hope to meet all of you onboard. We are staying at the Barbardos Hilton one night pre-cruise.

Does anyone know any of the staff onboard?

We were on the Spirit this past December. Our first impression was mixed--for example, we walked into La Terrazza for lunch after embarkation and felt the ceilings were a bit low (and we are not tall people). We just found it to be different from the Shadow (the only other SS ship we had been on) and different from what we expected. We also didn't like the vessel sinks and faucets in the cabins. I'm sure there have been a ton of posts on this subject--they just take getting used to. The above being said, over the course of the next few days we grew to LOVE the ship. So, I think it was different than what we expected and hence that may have put us off initially--and maybe put others off as well. And we all know that human beings are not big fans of change or getting something different than expected!

I do not know the current staff on board. However, we are sailing late August on the Spirit from Venice to Athens so I will definitely have more information on that subject when we return.

We have stayed at the Barbados Hilton pre and post cruise. Not sure whether we will arrive one or two days before. I think I would like to stay somewhere different this time.

So, deposit has been made on the cabin, and we have until mid-August to cancel the December voyage without a penalty....

If you are flying straight down to Barbados the the weather where you live may be a factor. If you are flying into Miami first and then flying to Barbados the next day the there is no problem

US Air flies on Saturdays only from Charlotte to BGI non-stop (cruise departs on Sunday). Hopefully it should be less of a weather risk than PHL, and it will get you in the day before. We got a great deal on that leg so you might want to check in out. You can always fly back on SW into Baltimore. JetBlue flies daily to BGI.

American flies from MIA to BGI. Sorry SteveB, but not my favorite airport to connect in...

We do not like leaving from there either BUT

$258 non stop MIA

$282 from Fort Lauderdale BUT we have to fly to JFk then to Barbados no non stops

That is even worse flying up north laying over then coming back down

Less then 150 days to go.

I'm Scott and I'm travelling with my Mom Helen, my brother Bob and his wife Susan and my partner Jay. We look forward to meeting you all.

We are staying in Suite 408/405/409. Let's arrange to meet in the bar one evening.

We are flying direct non stop from Toronto to BGI one day early. It's about 5.5 hour flight with Air Canada. As mentioned before we are staying at the Hilton.

Warm regards from Canada.

Thanks to you all for the travel suggestions. We are using the SS air program. It is on AA from DC thru Charlotte. December is not usually too bad weather wise, but it still may be a good idea to leave a day early. We're checking on details now and if we go early may stay at the Hilton. Bob and Victoria, where in Maryland are you from?

Hi Rita, David went to Cranston West! Then Brown University and Harvard. Is it the Hope High School on Hope Road that you went to?

In the past, we have cruised with friends and they insisted we bring formal attire, and we did. This August on the Spirit, we decided not to bring all the gear. We didn't feel uncomfortable at all and made our reservations for the formal evening in either Hot Rocks or La Terrazza (can't remember which) so we could dine in informal attire. We were told those restaurants are not formal. It was lovely to dine outside at those two restaurants. I'm sure there will be a bunch of us who don't care to "do formal" in the Caribbean.
Have a great trip to RI and look forward to meeting you in December!

We are scheduled to arrive Air Canada at approx. 3pm. Not sure how long it will take to get through customs, get to the hotel and check in.

The last time we were at the Hilton, they offered a "2 for 1" Happy Hour Special at the beach/pool bar. I beleive this ran from 5-7.

Good morning,
We are scheduled to arrive Air Canada at approx. 3pm. Not sure how long it will take to get through customs, get to the hotel and check in.

The last time we were at the Hilton, they offered a "2 for 1" Happy Hour Special at the beach/pool bar. I beleive this ran from 5-7.

I'll try and find out more.

ScottToronto

Barbados is one of those Caribbean islands where the bulk of flights arrive and depart at the same time. Our flight gets in around 3pm also, and I remember several other flights deplane-ing at the same time. I would probably figure 30 minutes inline for immigration, then another 20 minutes or so for the luggage (it's the islands). Then it's probably a 25 minute ride to the hotel. Let us know what you find out about Happy Hour.

I can't believe I just got off the Spirit on Sept. 3 and already can't wait for Dec. 11!

It would be nice if they thanked us with the upgrade!

However, I know the chances of that are slim to none....

I just got a message with a link that took me here:

http://www.silversea.com/specialoffe...ialoffer=11469

What caught my eye was this:

Venetian Society Members earn Double Cruise Days
Guests who have previously sailed with Silversea will also earn double Cruise Days when they book any of these featured voyages.
---
I called SS this morning, and the lower fares only will apply to new reservations, but you should have your TA put in a request for the discount. It only applies to Vista, Veranda and MS Veranda suites.

Right now, there are 90 unsold MS Veranda suites and 6 Silver suites.

The TA said that you could probably get the double days if your TA requests it.

How true...things like the towns we grew up in and the schools we went to feel, and are, so different now.

We should be there at the hotel for Happy Hour, assuming the flight gets arrives relatively on time. Am I imagining things, or do I recall you saying you were connecting in Charlotte?

90 unsold Veranda seems like a lot. But then again, these cruises in early December are rarely fully booked. Nice for the passengers, unfortunate for Silversea.

Not terrible, but will likely will take a few of the shorter, orientation tours on islands we have not previously visited. Might be interested in renting a car/sharing a cab on St. Martin and Turks.

Just a bit of news regarding staffing for your cruise. We're aboard now and until FLL. Captain Sangiacomo will leave 15 Dec after a few days of indoctrination for Captain Pontillo, the new captain coming from Cloud, I believe. Ricardo Dotti, the chef, will leave the ship 23 Nov and will be on vacation until 27 Jan, when he will return to this ship. Sanja, the bar manager, and her husband, Kire, the sommalier, will leave for vacation in Dec as well. They will go to Whisper for the WC in early Jan.

Good morning Doug,

Thanks for the information regarding the staffing on the Spirit in December.
I'm disappointed that we'll miss Ricardo, I've heard such positive feedback regarding his culinary talents. Do you know when in December Sanja and her husband are leaving the ship for vacation? I sailed with her before on another ship. Great lady!

Those of us staying at the Hilton, are we still meeting for "Happy Hour" at the beach bar. 2 for 1, at 5:00 pm on Saturday December 10th?

Victoria, I'll email you.

Thanks for sharing the information regarding the staffing on the Spirit. It's too bad that we'll Sanya this voyage. Will be nice to sail with Justin (D'Sousa) again. I sailed with him on the Cloud in January. Great guy!

Appreciate your updates.

Hi Doug,

Delighted to hear you are having such a wonderful time--your posts are terrific and we wish we were there to share in the fun!

Thanks for all the updates on staffing. Seems like it's the time of year when they are busy rearranging the deck chairs. I will miss Sanja but I am sure her replacement will take good care of everyone. Interesting that Captain Sangiacomo is departing Dec. 15--that is when we overnight in St. Bart's. I suspect he can catch an int'l flight easily from there. Hopefully it will be a seamless transition!

Best to you and Lynn.

4 weeks today we board the Silver Spirit on Voyage 5137. I heard there are still over 40 suites available. No complaints from me. I like it when the ships are not full.

Received a call from my TA "Your documents have arrived". I guess we'll have them by Tuesday.

Those of you staying at the Hilton in BGI, we'll see you at Happy Hour around 5pm on Saturday December 10th. Our flight arrives just before 3pm. Hope we'll make it by 5pm.

Look forward to meeting some of the CC members on board.

Thanks for checking in. Our flight arrives at 3:03pm from Charlotte. We hope to be to the Hilton by 5pm as well, but it might be a little tight (i.e., immigration, baggage, taxi, hotel check in can be slow at the Hilton, go to room for a quick change, etc.). Most of the flights arrive at that time and hence most of the hotel guests arrive at that time too! Hopefully the group will be there for more than an hour....

Any restaurant suggestions/ideas for Barbados, i.e., near the Hilton?

My understanding is the meet and greet is at the pool bar. I believe there's only one..it should be pretty easy to find. It's between the pool and the beach--i.e., centrally located! It's very casual.

Hi Peg and Barry,

Yes, we've finalized the get together/meet and greet the first night. (Emtbsm and I have been emailing to coordinate details, etc.)

We're planning on meeting for pre-dinner cocktails at 7pm outside the Panorama Lounge the first night in Barbados (the night we sail).

I'll post a reminder the day before we leave. Emtbsm has a list of those who said they'd like to meet the first night--I think there are about 16 of us.

Sounds like a great group and it should be fun. :)

We hope to make it to the Hilton pool bar as well for the pre-cruise meet and greet.

If any of you travelling on this voyage are planning to be online and posting on CC during the cruise, if possible could you find out who will be staying on after you leave the ship ie CD, restaurant manager, chef, and entertainment in Stars? Dear Fellow Cruisers; Gaga 5 and I wish you bon voyage. Due to my fighting a losing battle with a kidney stone, my doctor informed me today I should not be on board. Needless to say, we are hugely disappointed as we not only were looking forward to our first vogage on Spirit, but it was to be a birthday celebration as well. We would have enjoyed meeting you all and hope the cruise is wonderful and the seas are calm. Maybe there will be another opportunity in the future as we are now exploring a Med cruise this summer.
