my girlfriend and i are taking our first cruise ever. we always enjoy drinking captain and cokes or vodka sevens at bars before we eat. how are the prices on drinks? super expensive or pretty reasonable? just wondering what to expect. I am sure they are always in tiny glasses too.

Most drinks and cocktails are in the $6 to $7 range. A 15% service charge is added. However, most bars will have a happy hour, usually 4-5 PM, with half price or two for one drinks:).

Take advantage of "happy hour" where drinks are 2 for 1 before dinner in some of the bars. There is always a "drink of the day" which is discounted. As for actual prices, I can't help you. Someone more knowledgeable should chime in though.
Enjoy your first HAL cruise. Be sure to come back & tell eveyone what you thought.

drinks range from $6 - $10 -- depends on the brand
some ships have the 2 for 1 happy hour
some have the special $1 for the second drink
check your explorer daily program for the time and which bars have the specials

there was another thread just the other day called "About Mix" and someone was nice enough to post a listing of various drink prices....that might help you get an idea.

If you are paying $6 a drink +15% you are getting ripped by the bar for a vodka 7. But not for a "captain morgan "because it is a "call "drink so maybe $7.50 for the latter
If you go with bar stock, which for mixed drinks is fine, then figure $4.50 per drink +15% The trick the bar waiters pull is , when you ask for a say rum and coke or Vodka&7 is to ask you if such and such a brand i is ok. You assume that is what the bar stock is!
If you reply yes, then you just ordered a "call" drink for $1.50 or $2 .00 more.
A little up-sell trick I observed the bar waiters use to up liquor sales ( each bar has to turn in a shift report to the Beverage manager as to sales and if they fall below a quota they get in trouble) so they try to sell the highest dollar value possible.
Let the other guy pay $6 to $8...
If you reply just bar stock..... the $4.50 stuff... then you will be ok.

I don't know about any drinks for this low a price.
I order a very basic cocktail, bar stock, and the price has increased to $5.75 (from $5.45), plus the service charge. That's one of the lowest you'll find, I believe.

Where can you find a drink on HAL for $4.50 now? Maybe years ago.
Aren't mixed drinks about $6.75 plus $0.50 for call and $1.00 for premium? Even something on the rocks starts at $5.75 just like Ruth says.
Maybe Hawaiidan's point is not the price per drink but that you should be aware that when you name a brand of alcohol, you are increasing the price of your drink even when you are simply parroting back what the waiter asked you.

This was the Price on the N. Amsterdam this November/December !!!
$4.75 was what the bar by the pool aft of the Lido, was charging me
I just went and checked my reciepts ( my wife keeps everything) and
Got billed by the "call" scam once for $6.oo.... And called them on it.... they corrected on my next order.....
This next cruise thought I got it all beat....I just decided to quit drinking and save my money for other stuff. Maybe a glass of wine or a bottle of Caymus every now and then.

When I am on vacation I usually don't sweat it to much over a buck here and there. ;) Compared to the price of my whole vacation it is rather insignificant.

Why call it a scam if they ask you if it's OK?
Scam or not (it's not) I'd gladly pay one extra buck for a better drink, ;)

Save even more! Bring your own wine aboard. Personally, DH & I rarely drink at home. On vacation, an occasional drink before dinner as we listen to classical music or an after-dinner cocktail at the piano bar adds to our fond memories. We don't sweat the money spent. If we did, we shouldn't be cruising!
Each person, however, has to decide what works for him/her. Whether a person drinks or not, cruising with HAL is still a fabulous vacation, and we're thankful we're able to afford it.
