We did the 14-day cruise on the Amsterdam last year and thinking back, I don't think that there is a 'better' side - in the Glaciers, the ship will turn around, and with respect to docking, the ship docked on both sides (and for Sitka, it's a tender).

i have found that on the majority of our alaskan cruises -- the port side of the ship faced the glaciers the longest

I agree with fqtvguy. port and starboard are both fine. If you have a verandah or deluxe verandah it's really nice to have lunch delivered while you're in Glacier Bay. There's also a real nice, sheltered spot on the Navigation Deck just behind the bridge on the port side on the Amsterdam. You get to it by climbing the stairs from the deck below. The Captain. First Officer exchanged pleasantries through the windows and I was able get some great photos from there.

She should be in Holland, not Alaska.
Now, MS Amsterdam, she's a ship.
