I had the TV on and saw that ABC/Nightline was talking about cruise ships/Norwalk and had a couple that were on Veendam (probably were ill from Norwalk recently) - I but was in the middle of a family discussion so I couldn't tell what they were saying.
Did anyone else catch it?
We're they slamming the lines?

Didnt see it sorry but the Amsterdam is sick, my parents are on it for 18 days, they got meds from the doctor onboard and are feeling alot better, the captin keeps making anouncements that there is the flu onboard. My Parents said there seem to be alot more pax in the dinning rooms now, so they think the ship has control of it.

They were talking about cruise lines in general. They took the BLUE light in the rooms and I bet you can imagine what they saw all over the rooms! It really was gross. On the bedspreads.....walls.....floor....TABLE!!...ect.. Im bring cleaning supplies on my cruise.

I was on the Veendam Feb. 5-12 and I took Clorox Wipes and wiped down our cabin right away upon entering that first day and then at least twice a day after that (and I mean I wiped down everything. Maybe it didn't help much (or even at all, I don't know) but psychologically I felt better doing it and didn't get sick at all.

One segment that I saw was about the blankets and bedspreads. That was pretty disgusting! I wonder if a new policy of washing the bedding more often will come into effect? Would probably be healthier.
I know someone will say that don't do it in hotels either, but they should there as well!!
One of the guests on the show said there is a health risk regardless of where you vacation, hotel, cruise, etc and it has to be something we all have to be aware of.

That's one reason why I always appreciated Royal Caribbean's policy of 'double sheeting' the blankets in their bedding. You know they don't wash the bedspreads and blankets as often as the sheets, and that extra layer between me and the used blanket is very welcome - wish more ships did that.

I didn't see this program last night, but someone told me they watched it as well and Royal Caribbean and Carnival were featured as well. Is this correct??

Carnival...RCCL...HAL...Princess....but I saw a list that really included them all. The Clorox Wipes is a great idea. I was just about ready to pack the works! I may have to walk into the cabin and accidentally spill a soda on the bedspread and let it soak into the blanket. OOOOps......
I know its the same in a Hotel room, but that doesn't make it any easier to take. What bothered me was on the walls, TV, Ice bucket, phone, and....TABLE! I know thats expected on the bedspread/blankets and I'm careful with that...but...the Table!! Now that is something that you would think would be sprayed and cleaned. Oh well....I'm not going to stop cruising....just cleaning first !

I wonder how much the charge would be to have the blankets and bedspread cleaned at the ship's laundry? Do you think companies would change their policy about not changing bedspreads and blankets between passengers if lots of people sent the bedding to the cleaners?!! lol

I didn't see the program. People plunk a lot of money down for a cruise and then they get sick right before hand and they get on the ship when they shouldn't and it spreads. A lot of people don't get as much rest when crusiing and this always makes them suseptible to "what ever is going." I also think the confined area of the ship makes these viruses spread like wildfire. By the way, I am not an M.C.

MC = Methodist Chaplin? Mostly Catholic? Mighty Clean? Master of Ceremonies? Master of Cleanliness? Master Cruiser??
But you are a Master Cruiser, so that can't be it.
I'll put a bit on Master of Cleanliness. Yeah, that's it. 'Cause if it were a typo you would have edited the post, right?

Himself .... Please understand, that's NOT actually the way it happened on our Jan 15th Sailing on Veendam.
When we boarded Veendam, MANY of the crew and cruise staff were ALREADY ILL. :o
No HAL bashing here! It could have happened on any ship. Unfortunately, the crew was sick ... the staff was sick ....
Happy Sailing to ALL Future Veendam Cruisers! OCruisers :)

Next cruise I think I'll add a Super-Soaker and a gallon of Purell. Then, I can Hose down my cabin and my cabin Steward before the beginning of the cruise.

Purell is anti-bacterial, NOT anti-viral. If it is Norwalk, Purell will do no good. Just plain old soap and water is the best answer -- often.

What about bleach or alcohol? Are they effective against NLV?

RevNeal-
That is, after they put you through the "embarkation car wash", a nice warm and wet anti-bacterial experience, to get all those nasties off of you and your fellow cruisers!!!

Just disembarked from the Veendam this AM (2/19-2/26). Absolutely no problems with Norwalk agent on the cruise now. They have waiters handing you trays and dishes, while they wear vinyl gloves. Automatic dispensers of antimicrobials are present every place you turn, such as when you enter/exit the ship, the spa, the dining areas, etc. I did hear of one family who called the Infirmary complaining of diarrhea, and immediate response was that family was "quarantined" (i.e., could not leave their room for 24 hrs)...I was then told that the "offending" cruiser has Irritable Bowel Syndrome, was prone to diarrheal attacks, and she doubted very much that this was a self-limited infectious process.
