We are doing a 30 day Hawaii and French Polynesian cruise next January - I am wondering how many formal nights there will be?

You devil - you could at least have put a smile afterwards so the op would know you will kidding :p Seriously, there are usually 2 formal nights for every 7 days - but on longer cruises they tend not to be as frequent. I am guessing 8 formal nights . depends upon the ports and the captain. (ie. last cruise we were supposed to have 5 formal nights but there were only 4 - and that was a 20 day cruise)
Your TA or HAL should be able to confirm how many formal night there are by the way:)

Expect 6-8 formal nights.
I've taken several cruises of 33-35 days, and all of them have had 8 formal nights. A 32-day cruise a couple of years ago also had 8; a recent 32-day cruise had 7. This recent cruise was a tad more port-intensive than the other cruises.
Your final documents will give you the expected number of formal nights, although that can be reduced once on board.
I would plan four outfits, then do 'em all again.

We did this same cruise in March of this year and we had 8 formal nights. And we found a higher percentage of passengers dressed quite formally compared with what we have experienced on other HAL cruises. It was a wonderful 30 days - I am sure you will thoroughly enjoy yourselves.
Congratulations - it is a trip of a lifetime. :)

My experience is that longer cruises tend to have higher participation in formal nights.
