We were about to book an outside cabin on the Lower Promenade on the Statendam. However, looking at the deck plans, I realized these cabins look directly on the deck where people are walking, jogging, etc., I called HAL and asked about it. The lady said that indeed that is how these cabins are situated, but she assured me that no one could see us since the windows have one way type of glass. We were concerned about privacy and noise and said thanks, but no thanks, and we booked on a different deck. Has anyone been on these cabins? If so, how did you like them? We have been on several cruises, and have never seen rooms looking directly on the promenade deck.

We've had lower promenade on both the Ryndam and the Rotterdam. During the day, no one can see in. I even went outside and tried to look in with my DH in the cabin and I couldn't see anything (even with my face pressed up to the window). You do have to make sure the curtains are drawn when you have the lights on. At night when getting ready for dinner, bed, etc., we always made sure the curtains were drawn.

I had the same privacy concerns about the maasdam. After scouring the deck plans, I found out there are 6 'C' outside cabins on the verandah deck for the same price. These will have privacy and won't be as noisy as the main or a deck outsides. It is the same on all that class ship.

Yes, there are walkers on that deck, but jogging is not allowed at any time. Joggers must use on the upper level decks. I found those cabins very convenient for going outside for a weather report....You may hear some chair movement at times. Not a bad choice....

happy crusing....

 Just our opinion, but: We had a cabin on the LP deck on our recent Maasdam Holiday Cruise and absolutely LOVED it. During the entire 11 days I never saw anyone even try to look into our window - except DH who stood out there making funny faces at me! One morning we even tried looking in to see if the room had been made up yet and even with our noses pressed against the window we couldn't tell if the bed was made. We did close the curtains when changing clothes and at bedtime, but that was it. Jogging was not allowed on the Maasdam LP deck - only walking. Never heard any noise or voices or anything. The crew does wash down the deck each morning, but DH thinks that even then he "maybe" heard something once - but he can't really be sure. And those teak deck lounge chairs (just a few steps away from our room) were fabulous! We will find it hard to book any cabin again that isn't on the LP deck - unless of course we spend the $$$ for a private balcony/verandah.

My in-laws had a cabin on this deck on the Statendam during our Alaska cruise. They loved it! They booked just a couple doors away from an outside door, and felt like they had a gigantic balcony. My mother in law liked the convenience for her daily walk, too.

I checked for some friends on the HAL site and those cabins -- most of them in any event -- are smaller than the other standard outside cabins. We had some friends stay in one and they felt it seemed much more crowded but I can't speak from personal experience.

Wow - is that all ships or just Statendam? Our LP deck Maasdam cabin was supposed to be the same size as other "standard outside" cabins. We took 7 (yes, seven) suitcases for just the 2 of us and we had plenty of room for everything. Bed, night stands, sofa, dressing table/desk, etc. looked just like the photos of all the standard outside cabins. Someone else mentioned a couple weeks ago on these boards that they thought LP cabins were smaller, but I can't see why they would be. Of course, we have nothing to compare it to as this was our first cruise. Was plenty of room for us.

I think they look smaller on the plan because they are way back from the edge of the ship but if you look at the inside cabins on the same deck (lower promenade) there is only a single line of them whereas on the Main Deck there are 2 inside cabins side by side, which makes up for area from the sides of the ship. They are the same size as a D or an E or an F.

My sister used to always request a C cabin until she discovered the joys of a Suite and would certainly not be staying in a smaller cabin than a D.

Thanks guys for your response. I looked at the deck plans, and it seems the LP cabins are smaller. If you look at the plans, the promenade takes some space form the cabin. The cabins on the other decks seem to have those extra feet which to me is logical. Since we had those doubts, we booked one on the main deck. This one is in the middle of the ship near a stairway. We like that since the movement is much less in the middle. I do not like the idea of worrying about closing the curtains when the lights are on , etc.

The outside cabins on Lower Promenade are smaller than the outsides on other decks on the S-class ships. The desk area is shorter---there is one row of three drawers instead of two.
And! as if a shorter desk isn't bad enough by itself the TV is on the desk. In other cabins it's mounted on the wall.

If I'm going to be on Lower Promenade (and I do like that deck) I'll be in an inside---it's bigger than the outside!
(Been there; done that.)

Joal,

We stayed in a D cabin on Main Deck on the Maasdam in the centre of the ship when we did the Baltic in 1999 and we are booked into another D for our Transatlantic on the Maasdam in July. Other than a verandah I prefer to be in this position because I would hate to have to close the curtains whenever we decided to change our clothing.

The D cabins are spacious. Have a great cruise.

Thank you Aussie Gal. That is very reassuring. Yes, I would not like the idea of closing curtains when the lights are on. Besides, I do not care to see people walking pass my window at all times. I just want to see the ocean. If I want to see people, then I go upstairs to the public areas.
