You can take a train from either Rome Termini (Main railway station) or Rome St. Piedro (close to Vatican City) to Civitavecchia. It takes 1hr30 min (Termini) or 45 min (St. Piedro) to reach the port. From the train station in Civitaveccia take a cab to the cruise terminal.

I considered the train but then decided I did not want the hassle and hired a car service

I used Zelit limo. A person by the name of Paul answered email promptly (in good English). Their fares were reasonable. I used them for various transfers in Rome and they were on time every time. Email: info@zelitlimousine.com

If you have a lot of luggage I would not take the train but would take a private car instead. There are many choices available. Another private car service to look at is romecabs.com (not a taxi service) and if you go over to the Italy ports of call board you will find many more.

If you do take the train remember that from time to time there are train strikes in Italy and also that just like anywhere sometimes the train is delayed.

We have used Max Leotta for transport between Rome and the port. He's very easy to deal with and does not ask for a deposit. We have recommended him to friends, who would also recommend him. In fact, we got his contact information off of CC years ago.

Hope this helps.

Keith,

I really appreciate the advice i am receiving here, and i think with luggage it may be a bit of a struggle by train for us,
the limo/car option is the way we will go, just need to follow up the information given here.

Kind Regards to all for the replies:)
Gary.

The train is definitely the way to go. And I agree with muccouple until he/she says: "From the train station in Civitaveccia take a cab to the cruise terminal." No way!

From the station you do what hundreds of cruisers do: The Civitavecchia Walk. It goes along the waterfront. It's fun, it's scenic, it's not to be missed, and all too short.

Nearly everyone who is on the sidewalk on a nice day is wheeling their luggage: past the hotel fronts and past the outdoor cafes, and past the dive-shops etc. (One time we didn't go straight there but stayed in a hotel on the waterfront and spent a few lovely hours on our balcony watching it below, and happy that our turn was soon to come.)

And then you get on a bus near the castle at the start of the wharf and this takes you to your Ship.

If you are under 80yo, and it's fine weather, don't miss it.

OMG! My wife has just told me: that second time, I wanted to walk but she thought it too far. (She goes to a gym.) And I now remember the taxi the Hotel called: a smallish but very comfortable van, silver-coloured. It was a nice way to arrive. But there are lots of walkers....

silversea does organise a transfer by coach as well

if you search in the internet : the rates by pravte car are a lot cheaper as ordered on the ship !
