Krazy Kruizers,

How are you now?

Hope you are making good progress with your therapy, to enable you to go cruising to Alaska.

Thank you for asking.

Started out in pysical therapy -- then they moved me to occupational therapy -- usually lasts 2 1/2 hours for 3 times a week -- have only 4 sessions left from what doctor prescribed.

Saw surgeon yesterday and finally he is going to address my useless shoulder -- but the schedule with the PT group can't see me until Friday before I have OT -- next week being a holiday week -- they can only get 2 sessions in.

Right now I feel like I am going backwards instead of forwards.

I have until June 30 to decide if I can make the Alaskan cruise.

Thank you for your report.

What type of activity do you do at occupational therapy?
A session of 2 &1/2 hours must be quite tiring.

I do hope that the surgeon can do something positive for your shoulder.
So sorry that you feel that you are not going forwards with the treatments.

KK - I do hope they can find a way to get things to improve for you.

Good luck

First they use heat pads on the hand and wrist for 15 minutes. They they rub down and massage the hand, wrist and arm for another 15 minutes.

Then I have various exercises that i have to do to get the hand and wrist moving -- some are done by "counts" and some are timed. You do so many exercises and then rest for 5 minutes. At the end they ise everything down for 15 minutes. My DH just sleeps through all the sessions for the most part.

I have no idea what the other group will be doing for the shoulder.

Just got an e-mail from a friend.

Meant to say MAY 30th.

Not much time to get in OT and PT.

No, not much time. Sure hope you are able to go anyway!

Very sorry to read that your recovery has been so slow.

One of my "home" exercises is to use a couple of fingers on my left hand to type and to try and to try to use capitals.

You would not believe how many times I need to do some posts over.

OMG! I meant to add that I'm impressed and thankful that you are still typing and contributing here as often as you are!

Not that it is any solace to you given your situation, but all my fingers are in working order and I'm constantly doing posts over or editing them after publishing (and waiting for Godot, i.e., the CC server, to reload).

So often the fingers on the left hand will not separate and I will hit 2 and 3 keys at a time.

Sometimes it looks like I have created an entire new language that even I can't decifer.

Was your shoulder injured in your accident or is it possibly frozen shoulder from lack of use the last few weeks? I ended up with frozen shoulder after breaking my upper arm and being in a sling for weeks several years ago.

I do hope you will be able to go on your cruise to Alaska. Perhaps the therapist can give you some exercises that you can do on your own while you are on the cruise. I can't think of a better place to relax and heal!

Feel better!!

After being in a cast for 6 weeks and a brave with metal rods for another 4 weeks and keeping the arm in an upward position all that time -- yes -- the surgeon said that it is frozen. I had told him about it 4 weeks ago and he said it would be alright in a week -- it wasn't.

Thank you everyone for your kind well wishes.

I have a few exercises that I do at home -- they are easy -- and i do them every few hours.

I was warned that it may take a year or more to get somewhat back to normal.

When I had a break in my upper arm and was in a sling, the orthopedist never mentioned my shoulder and that I should have been exercising and moving it so that it would not freeze up. When the sling was finally off when my arm was down at my side I couldn't lift it over an inch- the shoulder had completely frozen. I took much PT to break down the scar tissue in the shoulder and was not a pleasant experience. I'm so sorry you are going to have to go through this, KK.

Krazy Kruizers,

I had noticed that you are able to use capital letters again, so thought that you must be making good progress.

Thank you for explaining the occupational therapy.

I really hope that you are able to go for your cruise, are you able to get a direct flight?
Very Best Wishes to you.

How very peculiar, my 9.49am message to Krazy Kruizers did not appear on the board, but my user name appeared in the "last post" column.

There was no page 2 for this topic.

Returned to re write the message, but it is actually here, not vanished into cyberspace after all!!

Right -- same thing here -- my surgeon never said a word about moving the arm and keeping the shoulder from freezing up.

At first I couldn't lift my arm at all -- had no function of the hand or wrist -- it was like a dead limb. So I tried doing some things on my own like using the right hand to help lift the arm. That worked a wee bit.

Sadly we no longer have direct flights to any major cruise port any more -- Pittsburgh lost US Airways Hub Status. And no other airline has picked up direct flights. Every time we want to fly to Ft Lauderdale, San Diego, Seattle, etc. -- always a connecting flight. We book months in advance with at least 2 -3 hours between flights. Then the schedule changes start and more flights are eliminated. We are now down to one hour between our flights.

erewhon
May 25th, 2011, 06:06 AM
That makes travelling time so much longer.
So, where do you fly to from Pittsburgh, for a connecting flight to the cruise port?

Krazy Kruizers
May 25th, 2011, 12:24 PM
For this cruise we have to fly from Pittsburgh to Phoenix and then to Seattle.

Originally on our return flight we were to have changed planes in Charolette -- now we change planes in Philadelphia.

For Florida departures -- US Airways goes through Charolette and Delta goes through Atlanta.

It does make for a long day.

Looking at my national geographic map of USA , it appears that you have to fly south west, then head north west to Seattle.
What length of time are these flights?

Well I sure hope you start to improve. When I broke my upper arm last year the orthopedist kept warning me about my shoulder freezing. I never had a cast, just a sling and a brace.

Yes -- that is the right direction -- I don't even bother looking at how long we will be flying.

Have already arranged for transportation between flights in case we can make the cruise -- so far -- it is a go.

Thankfully we do book first class -- so will have extra room -- and DH will have his pillow so he can sleep -- he always days he can't sleep on a plane -- but within 1/2 hour he is sound asleep.

Looks like very long flights.
My DH also, is able to easily sleep on flights.
Will you need a small pillow to rest your arm on?

I wasn't ignoring you last night -- just got sick at looking at a white screen on this site.

I was never warned about my shoulder freezing up. In fact my surgeon hasn't been too helpful until the last week.

I have been told it may take up to a year to get back to being 80% healed.

KK,
I have been through lots of both OT and PT.
It may be repetitive, it may be tiring, it should NOT really hurt.
But, it does work and help if you stick with it.
Hope it all gets you "ship shape" quickly,
r.

I hope you will be able to go on your cruise....I understand the difficulty however. I've had adhesive capsulitis (aka frozen shoulder) and calcified tendonitis for almost two weeks now and we leave on the Westerdam July 2nd for our first cruise...so I'm wondering myself how it's all going to work...but I'm going to do it because I could not stand to cancel! This is my second shoulder with the same thing, so I kind of know what to expect. I'll be in a sling with the pillow under my arm, but should hopefully still be able to enjoy everything. Not sure about how to handle luggage though....

You will regain use of your shoulder...it's a lot of work with PT but very much worth it. One year of my life was pretty much just PT and working hard, but I got full range back. PT is once again my "full time job" but this time I know how well it will go so am ready to get to work!

Had my first double session this morning -- OT and PT.

Because of the holiday next week they can only get me in 2 times for both sessions. Also the prescriptions for the OT and PT that the surgeon wrote are up June 2.

We are still planning on going on the cruise.

Thank you everyone.

How are your sessions going? Are you all set for your cruise? As you mentioned above about usually getting into the embarkation port early, imagine you must be leaving quite soon. Have a wonderful time!

I have one more session of OT and PT left -- they tell me I really need anther full 2 months of OT and PT -- maybe I can restart when we get home.

In the meantime -- DH broke a tooth that has a crown on it so he goes to see the dentist tomorrow afternoon to see what can be done - if anything.

This afternoon I have to see my endogastrologist as I am once agin having stomach problems -- due to too much stress.

If all goes well -- we will leave next Tuesday.

Oh, wow! Just what you don't need! (For some reason, I thought you were leaving this weekend.) Not that it will make him feel any better, but you can tell your DH that, one long month after it first manifested itself in a very painful way (the day before we went on the Panama Canal cruise on 4/22), I'm finally having a cracked tooth removed this morning. Almost got off in Long Beach instead of Vancouver because of it. Glad I didn't. The dentist says it split right up to the root.

Hoping your DH's dentist can do something now and that the cruise proves to be just the thing you need to relieve some stress.

Krazy Kruizers
June 1st, 2011, 11:31 AM
Thanks

That must have been really painful.

DH has been spending a lot of time in the dentist office -- I even had to drive him a couple of times while I still had a cast on. His teeth are being affected by the Plavix that he has been taking for over 9 years -- that is just one side affect.

Hopefully if the tooth has to be pulled -- and probably the one next to it as well -- it can wait until after the cruise.
