We are going to Venice in Oct. and wondering how far the airport is from town, an also if anyone knows a good place to stay that's not an arm and leg as far as cost??;)

For a wealth of imformation search for Venice in the Ports of Call forum.

The airport is only a few miles from Venice, but from most hotels you can only get there by water. Land transportation is available from Piazza Roma, which is close to the train station.

Don't underestimate the problems of handling a lot of luggage from your hotel to the airport. Water taxis are handy and convenient - but VERY Expensive. Say 80 Euros or more - which currently is probably $100 or more. If the water taxi can take more than two pax with luggage and you share you could save, of course.

Venice is one of our favorite places - you'll love it - but inexpensive it ain't!

Hmm. You seem to have managed to post this twice. Since there's more info in the other thread (http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=142056) why don't we stick to that one?

I have been to Venice 3 times. My family and I are going there on April 27 to cruise on Rotterdam on the 29th. I logged on Google to find Venice, Italy. After several day's research, I booked our pre and post stay at Locanta Gaffaro. Because of the good review, location and our budget. Airport is 15km(=9.5 miles) away. Water taxi cost too much. So buy a city map & choose a place that is close to Piazzale Roma, the only part of the city of Venice that can be reached by car. The Public bus or taxi will take you to Piazzale Roma. At this Piazzale, you can get ticket for water bus that is good for 1 ride, 24 hours or 3 days rides...You can tell that I am a budget conscious traveler. I am not telling my husband that there is water taxi available. There is instruction for transportation by bus from our hotel(B/B rather). Good luck!

If you book with a hotel they will arrange a free water taxi to take you to Murano to visit the glass factories. Of course getting back will require you to pay for the taxi or take the vaporetto unless you are a big spender. The water taxi will get you there in about 15 minutes it is over an hour back on the vaporetto.
