hi all,I am thinking of booking a cruise on Balmoral, leaving Southampton Dec 8th this year, to Lisbon and the Canaries, and was hoping for some indication of what to expect in regard to the weather/ temperatures. I have been told the seas can also be rough at this time. Any cruisers done
this trip in December? Any help greatly appreciated.

Hope you get a reply to this as we are on Boudicca in January. Our first cruise was onThompson spirit around the Canaries . I think that was in the winter, and it was ok..bumpy going into Maderia if I remember correctly.

I've been to Tenerife in early December (not on a cruise) and I think it's reasonable to say the weather is very much luck of the draw. The best you can expect is like a decent spring day, but equally you might be under a cloud sheet and quite chilly.

Been there on Boudicca in Nov, Dec.and on Balmoral in early Feb. ., weather at the Canaries was very good, if a little windy ,the ride down can be a bit of "motion on the Ocean" but we British are good sailors .;)

Many thanks for your replies, I'm wondering if this is the right region for a December cruise, tried the Caribbean a couple of years ago but trying to cut out air travel this time.

I have cruised with Fred. Olsen to the Canaries for Christmas and New Year on a few occasions. I have always been lucky with the weather. On Boxing Day 2009 it was so warm in Fuertoventura that swimming in the sea was a real pleasure. On the down side it can be rainy and rather windy in both the Canaries and Madeira in the European Winter. However, it will be milder than in NW Europe in December. The seas you encounter in the Channel, the Bay of Biscay and off Portugal can be rough but equally they can all be pretty calm. It's a matter of luck. Bon voyage.

Thanks, Parsman. Think I may reconsider this destination in December.
Best wishes.

We have booked to go on this cruise (Balmoral 8/12/11) - and like you, I was a bit concerned about the weather and the state of the sea. I shall be packing plenty of sea sickness tablets and waterproof clothing!
Looking at websites for Madeira and the Canaries, I am hopeful of some sunshine and warm weather once we get there, especially as this time last year we were gripped in the big freeze and experiencing temperatures of minus 18
