We arrived back this morning from the Oosterdam. As a first-time HAL cruiser, I'm sure my "gushing" over some of the touches many of you have come to expect, may seem a bit naive, but I'm a HAL "newbie."

Arrival, check-in and boarding.... all easy and quick. We arrived at 11:00 and were aboard by 11:30. We got into our cabin at 1:30.

The Ship: The Oosterdam is big and beautiful both inside and out!
There have been many comments on the boards about the colors on the vista-class ships. I felt the vibrancy of the colors added to the richness and elegance of the ship. This cruise had 1900+ passengers, yet it never seemed crowded. The design of the interior provided so many small areas to enjoy music, conversation or quiet personal space.
I loved the fresh flowers. All the tables in the Lido had fresh, blooming orchid plants. There were tiny vases of flowers on all the tables in the bars and lounges and the massive bouquets throughout the ships were wonderful.
The ship is spotless and well-maintained by an obviously proud crew. All the crew we spoke with seemed to really love the Oosterdam.
We had cabin 5187, an aft suite with a huge wrap-around veranda. It was wonderful--so much space: loads of closets, a dressing area and huge bathroom. The view from the veranda was amazing. To us, the aft cabin was worth the extra walking. We even had a full moon! It was our first suite and wow, HAL does know how to take care of suite guests.
The glass elevators were so neat! What a view as you came down from deck 9 to deck 2 with the aqua water churning below, along the side of the ship, in the deep blue sea. (Even with the large number of passengers, we usually had these elevators to ourselves.)
The Neptune Lounge was a delight. (Yes, I too, loved the coffee machine!!!! ) It was a quiet spot with the best munchies with a staff to answer any questions or requests.

The Food: We enjoyed the Vista Dining Room very much. Our waiter and his assistant made each evening a special event. They knew our personal wishes
after the first evening. There were a few evenings when the choice of entrees was very difficult--everything sounded great. We were pleased with all our meals there. The last evening's menu was disappointing for us--but that is a matter of personal taste. I opted for a steak . Since we didn't care for the appetizer options, we asked for and recieved shrimp cocktails instead. (They do aim to please!)
I felt the food in the dining room was excellent. My DD celebrated her birthday and (thanks to a suggestion from this board) I asked for the Indonesian birthday song and it was beautiful.
Lido food was very good and there was a wide variety of choices. The service here was helpful and given with smiles.
We ordered breakfast on our veranda once and the service was prompt and food was excellent.

Service: Overall, he service we had throughout the week was as excellent as I had heard it would be. There were some surprises on this cruise.
I was amazed at the age demographics. I had always heard that HAL was basically an older group --NOT this week.

Clothing on board: I was not expecting all the jeans on board. My DH wanted to board in jeans, I told him I felt jeans wouldn't be worn much on board. WRONG. They were everywhere---even on the formal nights after dinner. In the disco on formal night I saw several in jeans--some with torn knees and flip-flops! I was very disappointed when we got our rundown of dress for the cruise. It was changed from 2 formal, 1 casual, 4 informal to 2 formal, 1, informal and 4 casual! Some people seemed to REALLY take that to heart!
50-60% of the men in tuxedos. The ladies looked great in evening gowns/long dresses. Most stayed formal throughout the evening.

A few random thoughts....
The first evening there was a suite reception in the Neptune Lounge. There I met James Deering the hotel manager. I commented that I he was well-known on on cruisecritic.com. He smiled and said, "I'll see you tomorrow at 4:00 in the Crow's Nest." (He knew several CCers had made plans to meet on the roll-call board!) The next day a few CCers met and Mr. Deering came and met with us. He's a very knowledgeable, warm and accessible man. HAL is very fortunate to have him! We were fortunate to meet him several times throughout the cruise.

There's a new bar hopping drink card in which you pay $20 and get 6 drinks at various bars throughout the ship. It was very popular.

Northern Nights nightclub loud and crowded two evenings we stopped by. (Not my cup of tea.) I thought the Crow's Nest would be a "hot spot" but the two evenings we stopped by it was very quiet.

The Ocean bar dance floor filled and music was great.

Loved the musical call to dinner! Loved the Yum-Yum man!!!

The entertainment ..
The one male singer (Bobby Black I think was just Ok) We passed on the acrobats.
But WOW! the dancers! A new group of dancers came on board Saturday and they were fantastic! Everyone was talking about them and the two shows they did. They got a very loud ovation when introduced at the ending disembarcation meeting. The lead singers in the show were very good--especially the male lead. He has a wonderful voice and stage presence. Those two shows were the best I've seen on a cruise.

Excursions: We took one and it was very special. Everyone on the tour seemed to enjoy it. WE took the Sierra Madre, Concordia and Capalo tour. 7 hours long up into the Sierra Madre mountains. We visited two small towns. The last was a small village with cobblestone streets. Amazing views, lovely people, buildings from the 1700's. We stopped at a small furniture-making factory to see hand carving being done. Another stop demonstrated hand-made brick-making. I would highly reccommend this tour. Our guide was Elazar. He gave the rich history of the area and proudly told of the cultural life of his people.

It was a wonderful cruise....breathtaking sunsets, interesting ports, great service and many new, interesting aquaintances. Was everything perfect? No, But those small gliches happen when you travel. (Just a small blips on the radar screen.)

Last night's dinner conversation centered around where we want to sail next......

Thanks to the crew of the Oosterdam for making our cruise so terrific. Holland America is very special!

What's amazing, to me, is that so many have posted about being on the O'dam since it started it's Mexican Riviera season in January - and there's been very little negative. I think right now is the only ship in the line we can say that about!

Welcome back!

I'm booked in 5187 for our Thanksgiving cruise and can't wait! It sounds like you ended up using the Neptune despite the distance from the cabin...which is so nice to hear. I'm certainly planning on getting my morning java there!

It's great to hear all the positive feedback. I am taking this cruise (my first!) April 23rd. I am hoping for nice weather too! Does anyone know the general weather conditions and temps for April in Mexico?

To sail with that excellent team that the "O" has, you can't go wrong! Just wait til I fill you in on another excellent issue
that convinced me HAL is THE WAY to go!

cruznon, thanks for backing me up ... and the others who sailed on Oosterdam recently!

Curznon - Thanks for this great summary - we are on the same cruise, in a SS suite, leaving next saturday. Ineresting about the change in dress nights - were most people in coats and ties on the informal night? It sounds like the informal nights most people (if we take out the jeans and flip-flops) were in kaki and collard shirts. is there a night that the dining was not good that you would suggest we go to the Pinical...?? Finally, how was the weather once you got our of San Diego..??

Thanks.

Cruznon, as you know we will also be in 5187 October 8th, did you take any pictures of the inside of the cabin? I am mosted interested to see how much smaller it is compared to the regular S Suites on the Vista class. in just two week we will be on the Westerdam in 7051.

I am so glad you had a great time. This is exactly how we felt after our Oosterdam cruise to Alaska last May, she really is a great ship and the staff is wonderful.

I agree with Cruznon-it was a great week. My only question is what happened to all of the folks who participated in the pre-cruise notes on this board but didn't make the onboard get-together? Did Spendalot avoid LA traffic? Did our friend from Peking make the cruise? So many unanswered questions (g) But, they lost out as those of us who did make the meeting were later invited to the Captain's cocktail reception.

I fully agree that James Deering is a delight. We had brought a number of older wines from our home wine cellar. Turns out Mr Deering is a wine buff-so we spend a few evenings sharing a glass of well aged cabernet. He used to run Masa's in San Francisco. In its day it was THE restaurant in San Francisco. It was so good it had a 3 year waiting list. His stories of that time in the CIty were fascinating.

I'm so glad that others are finding this as well. I met him in 2001 aboard Norwegian Spirit and identified him as being one of the most knowledgeable and personable senior staff at sea. His value-added knowledge and hospitality truly polished off what already was a memorable vacation. The fact that he is now with Holland America Line just makes me smile ! :)

Thanks for the great review. Was thinking about this sailing for next presidents week. How was the weather - air and water temps and that question that always comes up - how were the seas??????

The more I keep reading all the positive reviews about these sailings...the more interested I become. Thanks to all who have posted - Vic, rev Neal and Queen of Adven!

dakrewser, Vic and all who have heard of our "Bumped" Cruise
That is the reason that when we got bumped from the "O" for the 10/29 sailing, we did not want to take some posters suggestion of taking the Ryndam on the 28th instead. Since this is/may be our first HAL Cruise, we wanted to start out with a ship that has had so many Positive comments. The Ryndam may also be a good ship, but I read too many reviews about sewer smells and other negative comments, (see CC reports on this ship) and feel that the "O" will be a better choice for us.

So keep your fingers crossed, the only alternate week I was able to get off would be for the cruise of 11/12. Our TA is going to contact them tomorrow to see what kind of deal we can get (if any) for that Cruise. :)

Thanks so much for your review. We will cruising March 26 with our family. Were there many children onboard and did you observe many teens? We're so happy about all the positive reviews as this will be our first HA cruise though we are all experienced cruisers. We had computer problems and therefore missed reading all the earlier reviews. Any links appreciated!

I am very glad to see all the positive reviews of this ship. Down to less than 8 weeks until we sail.

I am also happy to hear of that $20 drink card. Sounds like a good value. Can you get any drink, or is it limited to the drink of the day? Also, is it limited to 1 a person. I don't want to sound like a lush, and I don't drink often, but even if I were to splurge on two drinks a day, I would be out by day 3. (of drinks on the card, not passed out ) :)

Cruznon,
Thank you for posting a review. I am booked for my first HAL cruise 4/30 in cabin #5187. It sounds like you had a great cruise and the only disappointment I can foresee is that I will only have 4 nights to enjoy a great ship.

Thanks for all your comments. I'll try to answer the questions...Lisa, I do have some photos--just need to download and organize. I'll have them in a few days. 5187 has 330 sq ft inside--that's about 30 sq ft less that suites midship on Rotterdam deck. 5187 is the largest aft suite.
I'd estimate the total veranda to be approx 250-300 sq ft.. Besides the aft section (22' x 12' approx) there was a side balcony approx 20' x 6' here's a photo of main aft section of veranda. We had a table with 4 chairs, two lounge chairs, three wicker chairs and two wicker ottomans---with lots of open space.

http://boards.cruisecritic.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=4618

We had breakfast here as we anchored in Cabo San Lucas!
(OK. I 'm missing this...experiencing cruise withdrawal is NOT pleasant.)

Weather....first day out we had sun with scattered clouds....cool.

Cabo...warm (low 80's) Became very cool when sun set...clouds came in and the most breathtaking sunset I've ever seen! I'll post a photo later.

Mazatlan... very warm (high 70's-low 80's.) Lots of clouds.

Puerto Vallarta...warm..high 70's..clouds

Sailing back.. Thursdaywas beautiful--sunny and warm...clouds and cooler temperatures from late afternoon on...
Friday...OK...COLD and windy.

All the coulds and cooler temp probably dues to the storms in Southern California.

Tiffnco, we took this itineray in Nov and the temps were approx 8-10 degrees higher. You're going to LOVE it1

As for the drink card--there were six different drinks (DH calls them the foo-foo drinks) at differnt bars(Lido, Ocean Bar, Piano Bar, Northern Lights, etc.) after the 6th drink there's a Oosterdam surprise gift--I won't tell--just a nice little souvenir.

I forgot something. It was mentioned earlier that in Puerto Vallarta the Oosterdam had to tender and use the Mexican tenders and it wasn't very efficient. WELL....the Oosterdam is now using its own tenders---very efficient. However when we returned to ship at approx 2PM and the entrance from the pier into the tenders were "interesting!"

Dress on casual nights..kaiki's/ polo shirts in dining room. Informal nights men wore knit/polo shirts or sport shirts with jackets. Ladies wore nice pants suits or dresses. Everyone looked very nice in dining room always.

To all of you who'll be taking this cruise ....I'm sure you'll love the big "O" as much as we all have...:D

Here's another photo of the aft balcony cabins.http://boards.cruisecritic.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3027&stc=1

As for the question about the sea conditions... Most of the trip very smooth-1-4 ft seas. However on Thursday evening 12-18 ft seas--not really uncomfortable, but you were aware you were aware you were on a ship! (How nice!)
We got so used to falling asleep with a gentle rocking motion.:)

Just a couple of added points to Cruznon's fine observations:

Avoid cabins in the middle of the ship on the starboard side. While HAL now does its own tendering in Cabo and PV, they use lifeboats from the starboard side. They unload them as soon as we arrive in port at around 7am. It is impossible for all but the deaf to sleep through this noise.

In PV, the O'dam normally tenders in. Try to find out what time is low tide and avoid going or coming back at that time. The pier the O'dam tenders use has concrete steps leading down to the tender. The steps are unusually narrow. I couldn't even get my large size shoes on standing sideways. At the lowest tide it is still another 2 to 3 feet to the tender. It was a struggle. Had we known, instead of coming back around 2:30 p.m., we'd have had another drink on the beach and come back later with a higher tide.

DH has limited mobility with his left leg, he wears a special made hard cast boot on his left ankle that is still broken after 7 years, he can take it off and go into the water but he cant jump up or down on it even with the boot on. So this would be very hard for him, so we thank you for this info!

Bfson,
It was great meeting you and Laurie. Wonderful to put faces to names!
You're so right about the tenders. We boarded tender around 2PM and it was quite a feat to get in the tender--down three narrow concrete steps onto wooden steps in the tender while ducking your head! Everyone made it but, if I'd known, we would have waited a bit. PV was so crowded and noisy we decided to come back to ship swim in the WARM aft pool and then sunbathed on the veranda. the ride back to the ship was neat--the size of the Oosterdam was quite impressive.

Lisa and those taking the "O" soon, in the afternoon order appetizers on the veranda. The cheese assortment is great and the small bay shrimp cocktails are delightfulful as you watch the wake.
At night we sat on the side deck in those comfy chairs and watched the lights of Puerto Vallarta as the last tenders arrived and we got under way....:)

I know, that constantly amazes me. When I went on the Infinitys' first Hawaiian cruise, we had 50 people sign up to meet. Only 15 ever made it. They sounded so enthusiastic on line.
Then on the Ryndam to the Mexican Sea of Cortez, there were a couple of long time posters here that had to have heard we were going keep mum about being on the same ship until we got back. I didn't think I was THAT scary a person.

I agree with Cruznon that the Sierra Madre tour is excellent. I took it a couple of years ago and it was cool to get away from the hawkers in town and go back in time to old Mexico. Highly recommend it to anyone!

Sure wish things had been different and I would have been with you on this cruise.
