If you have your documents (tickets), they should state what time you have to be on board. As for unassigned cabins, fill out your immigration forms online and that may show the cabin. If not, keep checking the immigration form.

If you aren't assigned a cabin prior, on the day of sailing, check with the porters first when you get to the pier. They will have a list of all the cabin numbers for everyone. They are all assigned at that point. There isn't really a point in haggling over your assignment unless you want to pay more to upgrade from what you are given.

The porters will give luggage tags and will put your cabin assignment on the tags. Don't send your luggage through without a cabin number on it, or it will be days before you see your luggage.

I've done this a few times. You won't get anything lower than what you paid for but it doesn't mean you will necessarily get something better. I depends on how well the ship sold. It's like a roll of the dice with guarantees...How lucky do you feel?!?!?
