View Full Version : Have you ever accidentally taken something...

Have you ever inadvertantly taken something from a HAL ship? I ask this question because I was going through my closet yesterday and realized I have a dry cleaning bag from the Maasdam... It is the blue cloth one, with the embroidered Holland America logo and "Dry Cleaning" on it.

I didn't realize at the time, I must have packed it along with my swimwear - I have a pareo which is the same color.

When I told my DH, he said, "Well, at least it's not the china from the Pinnacle!"

Should I bring it back to the Volendam? Mail it to Seattle? Keep it and forget it? I feel bad about it.

What would you do?

I took my room key with me once. It was one of the old room keyes, you Mariner's know which one, the one with all the different holes in it. I didn't discover it til 2 years later!!!!

You could just take it on your next cruise and leave it in the cabin. I haven't taken anything that I know of. Obviously lots of people have. Just search Ebay for "Holland America" and you'll find all sorts of stuff like china, flatware, ashtrays, etc. Amazing!

I think I'd just bring it back when you cruise on the Volendam because I am not sure that Seattle wants it........:)

but then again, Ebay is always a possibility.....;)

I don't recall we're ever taken anything off the ship that we didn't pay for or weren't given but maybe there's something somewhere in the house. I think I once had an extra cabin key (old kind) from the Ryndam but I don't know what happened to it. I wouldn't worry too much about the laundry bag. I certainly wouldn't send it to Seattle....they'd probably just throw it away.....it would cost them more to get it to the ship than they probably paid for it in the first place. If you're really concerned just take it on your next cruise and leave it behind.

Did you see a charge of $15 on your bill?

Think that's the going rate if a passenger decides to 'acquire'
one of the bags. When you open it, the white tag has the info.

If you paid for it already, why bother bringing it back on board? I'd keep it to use as a beach bag or something.

Wasn't it the laundry bag that was for sale on EBay a while back for a first bid price of $25!!!??? I remember someone posted the link and we couldn't believe it.

So the honest and good Laura will bring it back on her cruise in March and the very bad Laura will put it up for auction on EBay;) .

Just remember ... we're watching you!!!:D

:o Well this is a little embarassing and gross, and it was not on a HAL cruise. Years ago on a Carnival Cruise, we must not have noticed this item when we first got into the Cabin, but when we got home, there was an extra pair of mens boxer's (silk) included with our dirty laundry. From then on we make a thorough check everywhere when we first get into the Cabin.

My DH still likes to tease me about having a man in my cabin while he was in the Steam Room. :D

Laura, the only honourable thing to do is bring it back to the ship yourself:) . The very same cabin, as a matter of fact. If you don't already have that same cabin booked you will have to book another cruise so you can return it to it's proper destination. ;)

Years ago my husband managed to acquire a washcloth from a public restroom on the ss Rotterdam. Unfortunately, I can't return it to that ship anymore. :( Can't bring myself to use "stolen goods", either. :D

RuthC - LOL! What a great idea! We will have to book another cruise on the Maasdam so I can personally return it - hee, hee!

Heather - The "good Laura" will return it! Even the "bad Laura" would not list it on eBay... or, then again....maybe not! LOL!

Vic - They could have charged us for it! Maybe I should go back and look at my statement, I rpobably wouldn't have even noticed it at the time, but I think I mixed it up with some of my clothes on the final night of packing.

Well, Laura, I would check first to see if I were charged before you go returning it. Or you could return it and ask for a credit:o .

Okay, 'fess-up time;) . Personally I have never brought something home by mistake. I have barely enough room as it is. But in the past DH had a little problem with washcloths making their way into his suitcase wherever we would go. We'd get home and there would be one washcloth. So embarrassing!!! I THINK I've cured him of this dreadful habit, but I'll never know for sure.

He still brings paper towels home from the public restroom at work. Can you believe that??? I'm not accountable for a grown man's kleptomania. And here I said I wouldn't write anything personal!!!!:D

OMG! Heather, I'm LOL here! Let's see... my DH used to take all the match books on the ship that he could find and bring them home! We have tons of them!!!

Maybe I should sell them on eBay, since HAL no longer provides matches, they might be worth a lot!!!

Nope, but we have left plenty of things behind! This time it was my wife's jean jacket.

I used to take a bunch of matchbooks and leave them where they would do the most good as advertising. Sometimes at the votive light stand at my church! Other times, at work. People would ask me about them, and I'd go into my standard "Sail HAL" pitch.

Anything free that had a logo would go into my suitcase -- again, I'd use it as advertising. A few napkins when I'd have people over. "Oh, my; I guess these are from my latest cruise on Holland America Line. Wonderful trip," etc.

I would never deliberately steal anything. With the possible exception of my cabin steward. But I would sashay up to someone with the authority to do so and say, "Hey, got any spares of those?" Well, maybe; hasn't happened yet, but sometime I might try it.

Tom, you reminded me. I did do my darndest to get our dining steward into my suitcase, but he just wouldn't fit. So I then used my most feminine wiles to convince him to come home with us and that didn't work either. I have no shame about that. I desperately wanted him.

I wonder if you're allowed to take that book ... Welkom ... with you when you leave? I was gonna take it once and then forgot. Of course, I planned to inform my cabin steward via a note so that I could be appropriately charged for it, but then just forgot about taking it when packing.

Blue skies ...
